Turano family from San Demetrio Corone, Cosenza, Italy to Brooklyn NY
Hello,
I'm looking for members of the Turano family who immigrated from San Demetrio Corone, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy to Brooklyn NY around 1905.
Demetrio (b.1879), Domenico (b.1891) and Nestie (b.1887) were three sons of Nicola and Angela Turano.
Demetrio married Rosa Gabriele, who also came from San Demetrio Corone or Acri. They had two surviving sons: Nicholas and Frank. Nicholas married Frances Mikrut, and Frank married Sylvia Amato.
Domenico married Angelina and had the following children: Emmanuel, Emelio, Helen, Yolanda and Louis. Emelio married Iride. Helen married John Giordano.
Ernesto 'Nestie' married Mary 'Tessie' Girardi, and had the following children: Arty, Addy, Rose, Feury, Jerry, Mary and Amelia. Arty may have married a woman named Rose. Feury may have married a woman named Nancy. Jerry may have married a woman named Marge.
I'd love to connect with anyone else from this family.
Thank you, Tambra Turano-Davis

Re: Turano family from San Demetrio Corone, Cosenza, Italy to Brooklyn NY
Eric, I am your Mom's first cousin Sal d'Alessandro. My Mom, Yolanda was your Grandfather's youngest sister. Tambra Turano-Davis helped me with the stuff I have before my trip to Calabria summer of '06. There are a couple of small mistakes/omissions on her genealogy but it is a very good place to start. If you have any specific questions about your grandfather I might be able to help a little. Your grandfather still has one surviving brother living in Long Island, Emilio (we called him Uncle Lou) I have been urging his kids (my other cousins) to have him look at a family album while being videotaped over the shoulder as his narration could help to fill in many blanks for all of us. I seem to recall that you lived near Boston, still there? If you talk to your Mom please tell her I said hello. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Sal

Hi Sal,
I emailed Eric last night, and am looking forward to hearing back from him. How was your trip to Calabria? I was hoping to hear back from you, and I'm looking forward to adding any information you have to contribute.
Thanks

Re: Turano family from San Demetrio Corone, Cosenza, Italy to Brooklyn NY
Tambra, Good to hear from you and I apologize for not replying sooner. We made it to San Demetrio for a day but between lack of preparation and lack of Italian we didn't make a whole lot of progress on the genealogical information. I do have lots of digital pics of the town which I will try to send to you. One crusty old geezer (who saw us snooping around the "colegio" or Center for Arberesh Studies and unlocked the doors so we could see the inside) insisted the Turanos were not from San Demetrio but rather Acri. I did unearth the death certificates for Angelina & Dominic so I started to work on the revisions of your original document but then late August came, school started, and I was off on the merry-go-round. It was cool to hear from my cousin's son however and it reignited my interest, but no promises. We are going to Sicily in July to hunt down the other half of the family tree, hopefully we'll have better luck (got to keep working on my Italian!) Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for responding. Sal

Domenico was my grandfather, his eldest son Emanuel was my father (b 1917, d. 1997). He married my mother Sybyl Rosmarin in 1951 and had three daughters, of which I am the youngest (b. 1959). I left the US in 1980 and have lived in Britain ever since. I remember my father speaking about a cousin Frank Turano, who lived in California and was a double for the actor Joe E Brown.

Turano family and Eric,
I am so excited I found this! I did not even realize my brother (Eric) had posted in this! So I am the daughter of Laurie Turano and granddaughter of Emanuel and Sybyl. I was looking for information on my Italian side of my family for a paper for school and this definitely helped and was glad to see comments from my family members! I would love to go to Italy within the next few years, and I will have to go to where my family is from! Thank you!
