Adam Tupka (Walter's brother) is my great grandfather. According to his son, Adam Jr. who passed away 6 years ago, Adam Sr. was born in 1883 in the Russian Empire. As a youth he was originally sent to the priesthood but ran away...when he was found he was put into the Czar's army. While in the army he met his wife, Cassie. In 1907 he came to the US to stay with his brother Walter and save money to send for Cassie back in Europe. When they first came to the US they lived in Hazelton PA.
The last name is different because my great grandfather kept getting his mail/etc mixed with Walter's son, also named Adam. The two Adams flipped a coin and one lost so the last letter of the name was changed. I think my great grandfather had to change his name (to an a). Shortly after Adam and Cassie moved their new family to Ansonia, CT. Walter and his family came to CT later.
In 1928, Adams wife, Cassie, disappeared for several days before being found dead in a field in the next town. There was a newspaper article about this that indicated suspicion around her death. There was a family story that Adam killed his wife but we don't know for sure. She is buried in Derby CT in the cemetery on RT 34. Her grave is unmarked.
Adam then walked out on the family, leaving his kids to be taken in by orphanages. The 1930 census indicates he may have gone with his brother after his wife died and he left the family.
My grandfather (Frank) and his siblings never saw their father again. We don't know much about him because my grandfather did not talk about his childhood. The picture I have of Cassie is the only known picture of her. My grandfather kept that in his bedroom until he died in 1981.

Walter's grandson, Jim Tupko is also on this site. He is a wealth of information as well. Like me he cannot go past Walter and Adam because we don't know anything about them. I see you added their parents to the site. If you have any info about them I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
- Frank Tupka
