Payton Tune, Walker Co.AL, 1940's
Just curious...I found out a few days ago, my mother had a crush on a boy named Payton Tune. I'm guessing he went to Carbon Hill High School, in Walker Co. She moved to NY in 1939, and my Aunt just told me he was killed in an auto accident not long after. Just curious if anyone knows anything about Payton or a picture? Iva Lee Rawls was my mother, who died in 1979. Just trying to get to know her as a young girl. Thanks,,,Rhoda rhoda@nls.net

Re: Payton Tune, Walker Co.AL, 1940's
Yes! Payton would have been my grand uncle. I actually have a rather grainy copy of the Daily Mountain Eagle clipping on his death, but I'll transcribe it for you:
"Carbon Hill Boy Dies of Injuries
Funeral services for Payton Tune, 26, of Carbon Hill, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident at Evansville, Indiana, on December 28, were held at Carbon Hill Wednesday and interment was in that city.
Mr. Tune was a member of the air corps stationed at Shanute, Ill., where he had been stationed only two weeks. He was supposed to have started home for a holiday visit when the accident occurred,
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tune, one sister, Mrs. Loyce Smith, of Columbus, Miss., and one brother, J.W. Tune, of Carbon Hill."
Also, my grandfather (his younger brother, J.W.) said that he sent his checks to his parents and so he didn't have any money to get home and hitched a ride to come home for the holidays. Payton hitched a ride with a man who was a doctor who happened to be drunk and that's what happened. I do not remember if my grandfather said the doctor died or not.
Payton was born on March 15, 1914 and died on December 28, 1940. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of him, as they are with my uncle who is very very particular about family photos, but I will try and get in contact with him to see if he has any photos I could at least maybe take a picture of with my camera. By the way, Payton is buried at "Old Pisgah" in Carbon Hill.
I know this reply comes 13 years too late, but I haven't been on this website too long.

Re: Payton Tune, Walker Co.AL, 1940's
I sent a message, but think I did it wrong..so here goes again. Mother was in love with Payton, but she went to N.Y. and he in the service. She married in 1945. Later divorced. She had a picture of Payton, but it vanished, probably when she married. She use to talk about him. (she died in 1979) I would love a copy of a photo, if you can. I did find his grave stone picture online. I was told Mother's younger sister , Myrtie, liked JW. I met Inez a few years ago, I had gone to Carbon Hill for a visit. Are you in AL. ? I'm in Ohio. Well, thank you so much for the information, it was really good to hear from you. Rhoda

Yes, I actually still live in the Carbon Hill area in Alabama. I will swing by my uncle's tomorrow or Sunday and ask him about some photos of Payton and then post back here to let you know so I can email them to you. My dad was named after Payton: James Payton and he passed in 1998. J.W., my grandfather (we all called him "Papa J"), was the one who told me about Payton. JW passed in 2000. I have a portrait of him and Dot (his wife) from the 80's right here: https://scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash2/t1.0-9/2856...Inez passed in 2005 and my mom told me that she would have had a lot of pictures of him, but all her stuff went to the woman who was caring for her before she went into the nursing home. I believe her name is/was Bernice and not sure of her last name. I had some information about Payton from his enlistment entry. He enlisted in Montgomery, Alabama on September 12, 1940 and was 69 inches tall, I figure that's around 5'7 and a half" and weighed 132 pounds. So, that's said it seems he was only in the military about 3 or 4 months before he passed. I'll reply back when I meet up with my uncle John Tune to let you know if I was successful in getting some photos of Payton. :)

Re: Payton Tune, Walker Co.AL, 1940's
I'm sorry it's taken a while to reply back. This was the only photo I could find and unfortunately, it was in poor condition. I'm afraid you can't tell much about him, but that's the only one I could find. His sister, Inez, would have had better photos, but since she has passed I'm not sure who has her photo collection.

Re: Payton Tune, Walker Co.AL, 1940's
You're very welcome. I'd like to show you these two photos as well. One is Payton's brother, my paternal grandpa, J.W. from his high school days. The other is a photo of my younger brother, David, taken on his prom night back in 2000 or 2001 I believe. You can note the similarity in the eye shape on all 3 Tune boys as well as I think the lips are similar. I know you didn't ask for these pics, but I thought it was pretty interesting. :)
