Tuke Family - Does anyone know Norcott Court, Herts?

Hi there,

I don't have any relation to the Tukes but are very interested about where they used to live.
Does anyone know Norcott Court in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire? I believe a large Tuke family lived here around the 1920's. My ancestors used to work for this family as cook and butler. I would be very interested in any pictures of the house then or now. (I understand the house is now an agricultural college.)

I would love to hear from anyone with any information.
Regards
Victoria

My father (Anthony Tuke) used to live in Norcott Court and we have many pictures of the house and garden. I see your message was a few years ago so maybe you found out something more.

Hello!

Thank you for replying to my post. It is lovely to hear from you. I haven't been able to find out much more information of the place other than a connection with Barclays bank.

My connection with Norcott Court starts with my great great grandmother, Mildred Luther. She was the cook there for Anthony Tuke, your father. Her husband, Martin Luther, was a butler there for a while too. Their daughter, Mabel, married from there in 1925 had their reception at the Cow Roast Pub. Do you know if it is still standing?
During the summer holidays my Nanna and her mother, Mabel used to stay at Norcott Court when the family were away.
I have attached a picture of Nanna in the grounds with someone - I wonder if you recognise who it is.
I would dearly love to see any pictures you have and any details from the time they were there.

Thank you again for getting in touch. I apologise if I sound very excited - I am!
Regards
Victoria

Dear Victoria
What a quick reply! I will try and find some photos of the house but this may take a little while! Don't know who the boy is in the picture but he does have a strong family resemblance.
Will keep you posted.
Regards
Eva

Dear Victoria,

I'm Julius Rost I was born at Norcott Court in 1972 and lived there with my family until 1992. It is still owned by my parents Hilary & Peter Rost. My mother has posted this in reply to the Tuke family question. "Yes I know Norcott Court. I live there. It is still a private house.
I knew the Tukes well. Sir Anthony Tuke was a colleague of mine on the Governing body of Berkhamsted School. He was born at Norcott when his grandfather lived there.
I have some photos of the Tukes there.
After the Tukes came the Davidsons. John Davidson, later Lord Davidson and his wife Joan were both Members of Parliament. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin stayed there, particularly after his wife died. Churchill used it during the war as a meeting place as it is near Chequers. We have a bedroom he slept in. We followed them and have lived in the house since 1964. My husband was a Member of Parliament for 22 years until 1992. In our time we welcomed many well known people, like Enoch Powell to the house. If only it could talk!
Two of my four children were born in the house. What else do you want to know. It has never been an agricultural college? All the best
Hilary Rost"

I've attached a photo and I'm sure my mother has some too. It's exciting to hear your story
All the best
Julius
