Am currently researching my grandfathers family tree. His mother was Mary Alice Tugwell born in Crudwell, Wiltshire around 1864. Mary Alice or Alice Mary married Benjamin Gurden on 9th June 1894. They had 4 children before Mary died aged only 29. I am looking for any information on her parents Thomas and Ann Tugwell. (nee Liddington - nee Carter) Ann brought a son into this marriage called Thomas Liddington. Thomas Tugwell had previously been married to Eunice Saunders however she died after 1851 and prior to 1861. Would be grateful if anyone out there has any information on this family and would be prepared to share it. I can supply information from Mary and Benjamin Gurden to current family living in New Zealand.

Part of my Dad's family are Liddingtons from Wiltshire.
Unfortunately, at present I only have information from the Census's - I'm very new to this and haven't had a chance to get birth certs etc.
However, my understanding was that Ann Liddington married Thomas Tugwell in 1858 and brought, what I assumed was an illegitimate son to the marriage (Thomas Liddington). The Anne Carter in the family was married to Ann's brother Isaac from 1851 until her death in 1887.
So your information about Ann being both a Liddington and a Carter has confused me - I need to look into that more.
I'll happily share any information I find. Amanda

Hi Amanda

Thanks for the information. I am also reasonibly new to this as well... all of the information that I have is from census records as well as using FreeBMD to check up on dates etc. Like you I do not have any certificates that relate to the Liddingtons, as I have only just started to trace this line. Originally I had wondered if Thomas was born out of wedlock and only linked the Ann Carter to Isaac Liddington thru FreeBMD. Therefore your information will correct my error. I will keep searching and see if I can come up with any other information. Debz

I thought my family tree might have impinged on yours. My Thomas Tugwell was born around 1787 in Heddington, Calne, Wiltshire. There were three children in 1841 in Heddington (George, Jane and Edmund), and three members of the Lewis family, but no mention of any wife. Thomas was living in Heddington during the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses with Jane (and in 1871 with a boarder James Spencer). There is no sign of any Liddingtons though.
