Two years later, in reply your message below, you may already have clarification from other sources. If not, please see my insertions in bold:

"hope you don't mind me butting into this correspondence but I have an interest in the Reverend Lewen S Tugwell, the father of the Lewen Tugwell on your memorial."

REV. LEWEN STREET TUGWELL WAS MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER - born at Fareham, Hampshire, Oct 6 1835, educated at Wilton Grammar Sch and at the College of the Church Missionary Society. First ordained Missionary on the North Pacific Coast (British Columbia) at Metlakahtla. After return to UK in charge of District Parish of St. James', Cheshunt. Curate of Keynsham and Workington, morning reader at Westminster Abbey and Chaplain to Westminster Hospital. Moved to Spain as British Chaplain in Seville, began establishment of the Spanish and Portuguese Aid Society. Purchased four churches - formed nucleus of Reformed Church in Spain. Died Jan 10 1898.

I BELIEVE HE WAS A COUSIN OF YOUR REV LEWEN TUGWELL MENTIONED BELOW.

"Lewen senior was Rector of St Mary le Strand in London from 1878 to 1891, of which I have written a history. He became Rector of Stapleford Abbotts in Essex in 1891 and died there on 10 June 1898, aged 79. He was an Honorary Canon of Rochester Cathedral but never, to my knowledge a Bishop."

PLEASE SEND INFO ON YOUR PUBLISHED WORKS ON REV. LEWEN TUGWELL OF ST MARY LE STRAND. Thank you.

With all of these Lewen Tugwell's it is easy to mix them up! I am now trying to sort out the Humphrey Tugwell's - a few of those in the family too!

Angela,

Many thanks for your reply. My History of St Mary le Strand is not yet published but I am happy to supply an extract on Lewen Tugwell to you. I can't seem to attach a MS Word document to this board but if you let me have your email address I will happily send it on.

I have been contacted by Michael Poole, who is descended from the brother of this Lewen Tugwell. He does not believe that there are any surviving descendents of his. Again, I am happy to put you in touch with Mr Poole of you are not already.

In the absence of any personal papers or diaries from Lewen Tugwell, I had difficulty saying much about him. If anyone researching the Tugwells does come across anything connected with him (rather than his cousin and namesake) I would be very pleased to learn of it.

Peter,

I appreciate your reply. Your extract can be sent to aosgene@yahoo.com. Thank you so much.

Yes, I have been in touch with Michael Poole - a distant relative who has done considerable 'Tugwell' research.

Hello, my great-aunt Alice Ensor Maskew was married in 1871 by Lewen Tugwell, Rector of Bermondsey. I was surprised by this, as the marriage was in Dorset, Alice's father was himself a cleric (the Rev Thomas Ratsey Maskew) she was his first child, and he was present at the wedding as a witness, so I'm surprised he did not conduct the marriage himself as he did with his other children. I am therefore interested in why the Tugwell connection - does either of you happen to know which Lewen Tugwell he might have been? It is doubtless to much to hope you might know why the connection, but I ask it anyway!

Cheers

Anne S

Hello Anne,

I believe this Lewen Tugwell was my 2nd great-granduncle.

Alumni Oxoniensis describes Lewen as 5th son of Lewen Tugwell, b. about 1768, of Shipton le Mayne, Glos

He received his BA and MA from Oxford between 1845 and 1851

Between 1865 and 1878 he was Rector of Bermondsey. In 1878 he was Rector of St. Mary le Strand (1881 census lists Lewen age 62, as rector of St Mary le Strand, at 19 Charlotte Street, Bloomsbury, London, with 2 servants), 1891 went to Stapleford Abbotts.

It is possible your relative Rev Thomas Ratsey Maskew was unable for some reason ( poor health) to officiate at the time of his daughter Alice's marriage, and that Rev. Lewen Tugwell, stepped in as rector of that church?

I don't know of any connection between these two families. Perhaps the fathers had been friends at University. Or perhaps Lewen Tugwell was her god-father.

Hello Angela

I have just started looking into the Tugwell side of my tree. My great-grandmother Constance married a Claude Buchanan Tugwell in 1903. I just obtained their marriage certificate and I see Claude's father is listed as Lewen Street Tugwell (deceased) with his occupation listed as clergyman.

do you know if there is more than one Lewen Street Tugwell?

Many thanks
Michelle

Hello, Michelle
My family tree shows Claude Buchanan Tugwell as the second child of Lewen Street Tugwell (my great-grandfather) and Harriet Leah (nee Greenwood), his first wife. It has a pencil notation that Claude was an Army Officer, but I don't know if that is correct. My records indicate Harriet had 11 children (2 died in infancy) and I have some notations next to some of them - which I can share if you are interested.

If you could share any other dates (b. or m. or d.) or information about Claude and Constance and your side of the family it would be very interesting.

My grandfather William Basil Tugwell (known as Basil) was the oldest of six children from Lewen Street Tugwell's second wife, Annie Emily (nee Peirce).

There have been many Lewen Tugwells over the generations but I don't know of any other Lewen Street Tugwell. He had quite an amazing history as a clergyman in England, missionary in Canada and Spain.

Regards,
Angela
