Glen,
Don't despair, it was actually not that uncommon, for a second child to be given the same name as his/her dead elder sibling. I have a couple of examples buried somewhere in my extended tree. FREEBMD does not include all records yet as I am sure you know, so the next time one of us is in London or Lewes, a trawl through the indexes would seem to be in order. There are enough coincidences to make it more likely than not. The other alternative could be a cousin as identical "family" names for cousins are not unusual either.

Anyway here is a little more info which I got sent last year, being the data from various trade indexes. the number name and year are the page, publication and year.
Tucknutt H. Greengrocer 126 London Road
317 Folthorp 1856
Tucknett Henry Greengrocer 126 London Road
1506 Kelly 1859
Tucknutt Henry Marine Store Dealer 13 Gloucester Lane 1506 Kelly 1859
Tucknett Henry Greengrocer 126 London Road
1991 Kelly 1867
Tucknutt Henry Marine Store Dealer Union Street North 1991 Kelly 1867
Tucknett Henry Greengrocer 126 London Road
2431 Kelly 1871

Somewhat confusing as the 1851 census has Harry "Henry" as a Marine Store Dealer, but the 1859 entries above seem to show either two Henrys or a Henry with 2 shops. Also 126, London Road seems to be a family home. I think a look at the 1871 census might help in order to see that particular Henry's occupation!!
Also amusing that our greengrocer has changed into a supermarket at the same address.
Off to Europe for a few days on business but will be looking forward to any further news on my return.
Mike

Well, the proof that this is not the family I am looking for has finally arrived in the form of a marriage certificate for my great-grandparents. The George William Hills I have been seeking is a bit younger than I (or anyone else) in the family imagined, and was born in 1893. I will have to have a look for where he was born, but his father is given as William Herbert Hills, not Charles George Hills.

If there is any connection at all to Charles and Eliza it may be only a slight one, possibly as a cousin.

It was nice to feel a part of a slightly more extended family for a couple of weeks though, and hope that you both have a good time finding out a bit more about the Tugnutts of Brighton. They sound an interesting bunch!

Glen, Mike

Hello there, unfortunately the hobby has had to take a back seat recently but I am now back on the trail!

Glen, sorry to hear you hit a brick wall with our connection but good luck with the searching!

Mike, bit of info for you that may be of help....... Henry Tugnot (bc1821) would appear to be a salesman of many types! I have him as a coal merchant in the 1861 census (@ 126 London Rd), a "coal ????" on his son's birth certificate, a green grocer on his son's (John's) marriage certificate, a beer house keeper in the 1871 census (again @126 London Rd) - note the connection in occupation to Mrs Walls in your/Glen's previous Email, and finally a "greengrocer and beer retailer" on his death certificate. I know Henry died after 1871 because of the census entry and prior to 1879 because he is recorded as deceased on his son's marriage certificate. So I searched every quarter in that range, ordered two possible certificates and one of them ,surprise surprise shows 126 London Rd. Henry Tugnutt died 15/09/1878 aged 56 of cardiac disease.

I also have 7 children recorded to him and Eliza (apologies if I've already told you this, can't remember what I had 6 months ago): Eliza (b1847), Henry (b1850), Thomas (b1853), John (b1855, my ancestor), Emma (b1858), Anne (b1860), Ada (b1867) and there may well be more thereafter.

Interestingly I think you mention 19 Cheltenham Place in one of your earlier Emails and my g-g-grandfather John was born in 1855 at 22 Cheltenham Place, possibly a coincidence but I'll follow it up!

I will try to scan an image of my tree thus far and post it on this site for your perusal. Not sure if it'll accept the image but I'll give it a go at the weekend. It may be of use of to you.

Dawn.

Hi Mike,

It's been a while but the hobby has kicked back in! I understand you are descended from Henry b c1850 whose parents were Henry Tugnutt b c1821 and Eliza (Mockford) b c1823. I believe I am descended from Henry's brother John Tugnutt (and I mean the Henry born c1850). As far as I can tell your 1850 Henry and and my John had the following siblings: Eliza b c1847, Thomas b c1853, Emma b c1858, Anna b c1860 and Ada b c1867.

My ancestor John went on to have 10 children with Jane Ann Diplock b 25.7.1859. One of their children was Ada Clara born 18.5.1879. She gave birth to my grandfather on 5.4.1902 as an unmarried mother and she gave her son the name Frederick Tucknott.... I am therefore a Tucknott through my garandfathers maternal line.
