tugendhaft family history
My great great grandfather Naphtali Tugendhaft immigrated into Canada in 1882. His wife Esther arrived in 1886. Family lore says they came from Galicia but census records say Austria. I he had a brother named Moses David Tugendhaft who also lived in Toronto. Napthtali had four children: Moses David, Dinah, Israel, and Emanuel. Moses David was my grandfather. He had two children: Benjamin and Tova. Dinah married Max James and had three children: Joseph, Charles, and Rose. Neither Israel (known as Harry) or Emanuel had any known children. If any of this if familiar please contact me.

Re: tugendhaft family history
Part of it is familiar. Harry Tugg (Israel Tugendhaft) married Anna Goldhamer Jun 10 1927 in Toronto. Dinah James was a witness to the wedding. The names of Naphtali Tugendhaft and Esther Moler are recoded as Harry's parents.

Re: tugendhaft family history
Harry was the brother of Dinah James. Napthali and Esther Mohrer(correct I spelling) were my gg grandparents. Another of their sons was Moses David. He was my g grandfather. I have traced back to the Austro Hungarian empire. Napthali was born in Sokolow Malpolkski which is now in Poland. I traveled there about a year and a half ago. He immigrated to Toronto because his brother Joseph was already living there. Another Tugendhaft family descended from Lipa Tugendhaft who was the first cousin of Napthtali and Joseph. His descendants are still living in Toronto.
My grandparents Benjamin and Ida Tugendhaft (Tugg) were friends with the James family and all of the Toronto Tugendhafts. I grew up with stories of them. It is nice to find what happened to Harry. I had not traced his marriage. I am not sure why.
Where are you living? i am in Florida. now retired but enjoying life. Irene Jalowayski (MY mother was the Tugendhaft) Her brother Richard's four Tugg children are still living in Florida as well.

Re: tugendhaft family history
Thanks for the response. Until yesterday I had never heard the name Tugenhaft. I had been researching Anna Goldhamer, the sister of an uncle of mine (he married my father's sister). I had determined she had been engaged in 1927 to a Harry Tugg, but had been unable to find any record of a marriage (or her death). Yesterday I finally found the marriage record (Toronto Jun 10 1927) and there was the Tugendhaft name. Harry Tugg (Israel Tugendhaft as you provided) was a car dealer in Toronto in the 1920s and 30s. He sold models no longer in existence - Star, Durant, Flint - under the dealership Tugg & Welsh. One of his eventual brothers-in-law, Edward Goldhamer (who used the name Eddie Gould), had his first job for a company named Tugg & Mason, undoubtedly a Tugg family business, that made/sold (probably sport) fishing supplies - reels, tackle, hooks. Harry is buried in Toronto but I haven't yet found the exact place or death date, if Anna is buried there also, or if they had children. I plan to go back to the cemetery when the snow is gone. The Goldhamer parents, Albert and Margaret, were from Batizovce, Slovakia, as was Anna who was the first child born 1897. They emigrated about 1899/1900. Albert was a tailor originally and both Margaret and Anna did very good handwork such as needlepoint. The first 2 sons were born in Philadelphia about 1901/3 (not yet proven) and the last 3 in Ontario 1905/9. The family lived in Toronto from about 1908 - one son died in 1910 - the last one in 1994. To my knowledge none had children. They were an accomplished family - an engineer, an artist, an advertising executive and a writer/social scientist who also did high-level sensitive work for the US military. I live in a suburb of Toronto and am trying to put their story together. The Slovakian/Hungarian origins make it a challenge. Thanks for your help!

Re: tugendhaft family history
I was in Toronto last summer and found Tugendhaft gravesites in both the Jones Ave. cemetary and the Shomrei Shabbos (sp?) cemetary. I did not see one for Harry but I had lists of the relatives I knew were buried there. Joseph Tugendhaft's family was primarily buried in the Jones Ave. cemetary. Napthtali and Esther are both buried in the Shomrei Shabbos portion of what I believe is Roselawn cemetry. Lipa Tugendhaft and descendants are also buried there. YOu might try to find them in Roselawn.
Thank you so much for the information about Harry Tugendhaft. I had read that he owned a car dealership and also heard that from one of my mother's cousins. I will add your info to my notes re the Tugendhaft's. Irene Jalowayski

Re: tugendhaft family history
Irene, I had found a reference to a grave in the name Harry Tugg at the Holy Blossom Cemetery on Brimley Rd (for some reason it is called the Jones Ave cem. As mentioned I plan to look for it in the spring. Yesterday I did a search on the Tugendhaft name on the website Jewish Genealogy OnLine, where I had earlier found the above record. It has quite a few Tugendhafts around the world including your grandparents at Roselawn as you mentioned. There is also one at Dawes Road cem (a couple of miles from the first) for Harry with picture of stone and dates (12/25/1895-7/24/1966) and engraving "a beloved husband and brother". That sort of implies that his wife was alive when he died. I am specifically looking for her death date, and confirmation whether they had children.
I'll check them all out. Anything you might find about the Goldhamers would be appreciated, and any tips on research in the Austro-Hungarian era.

Re: tugendhaft family history
Hi again Irene,
I'm confused on one point. In your original posting (Oct 2002) you noted names of the Tugendhaft children and I gathered the one who called himself Harry was actually named Israel. But in doing searches I encountered your family tree site and in there you have his name as Abraham Hirsh Tugendhaft. Am I missing something?
Also, I tried accessing the Yahoo Groups site for Tugenhaft that was mentioned by another poster but had no success in anything to do with the family name - only with the German word. Ideas?

Re: tugendhaft family history
There were several Harry's in the family. the Joseph Tugendhaft branch has and Israel who was called Harry. Napthali's 4 children there is Israel (Harry) the car dealer and Emanuel. I have to look at my tree for Joseph's other children and I am in boston right now at my sister's. My tree that is up on ancestry.com is several years old so it is not anywhere near up to date. When I get home I will try to post a new tree. I haven't done it because I have been doing lot of writing and I have to figure out how to post and leave out a lot of the more personal information. Sorry if you are confused. Irene

Re: tugendhaft family history
I went to the Jones Ave. cemetary when i was in Toronto last summer. There are a lot of Tugendhaft's buried there. Most of those I saw were descedants of Joseph Tugendhaft. I don't remember seeing Harry there but I didn't have a map or list of gravesites. We just had to walk around. There was no caretaker and we had to get the key from the people who live in the house right next to the cemetary.
I am at home now. Joseph Tugendhaft did also have a son named Israel who was also called Harry. he was much older than Napthtali's son Harry however. Of course they would have been first cousins.
I have had very good luck researching on Jewish gen. There are a lot of Tugendhaft records in the Polish database. Most of the towns of Galica/Austro Hungary and in what is now Poland. Some are on the Ukranian side of the Polish border today.
I have other family that came from both Czech Republic and from Hungary/Slovakia. Czech records are very good. I have had more difficulty with some towns in Slovakia. Over time I have been able to find most of my info on Jewish gen and then traveling to the place in question and going through the archives with aguide to help translate.
