Are you living in Toronto? When I was doing this research I was in San Diego so I hired a Canadian researcher name end Glen Eker. I do not know if he is still doing this work. Why don't you try doing the research on Jewishgen. Most of this is on line now. When I was doing the Canadian search it was not. Irene

:Naftali's brother was Joseph Benhamin Tugendhaft. HIs son was Moses David. That is a different Moses David from the ones in my direct line. there are Moses David's all over the place.

One Moses David was Napthali's father. Another Moses David was Naphtali's son and also my great grandfather. If uyoi go back to the European records you will see even more than the three we are talking about. Joseph's son Moses David is in your direct line. We are talking about three different people.

Naptjali's father Moses David had a brother named Hersch. Hersch also had a son named Moses David. These names were used over and over in the family regardless of who was living or dead as is custom in sephardic families. I have always wondered if back 500 years or so we came from some sepjardic line. The last names we have now were taken at the end of the 18th centrury and sound germanic. I don't think we have any way of tracing allthe back because so many records were destroyed in WW II. and few roecords were kept before late 1700's early 1800's except in churches.

To me it also sounds a bit as if there is a Sephardic tradition here - because the same names keep repeating themselves as you say. It could be. I think there were Sephardic communities in Central Europe even prior to the Ashkenazi communities, so it is quite possible. My uncle (M.D.'s son) was Avraham Hirsch.
Very interesting bit of information, thank you for it.
You have really done very serious research. Did you grow up in Toronto? Or did your family move to the States long ago?

There were sephardic communities in the Austro Hungarian empire for sure. they came up through Italy. Sephardic synagogues were scattered throughout eastern europe. I did not find any history of one in Sokolow Malpolski though, Tugendhafts lived there but also in surrounding towns likeBoryslov, Lvov and others. When you look at records from the area you find them.

I know that Naphtali was a very religious man according to my grandfather. Very strict about all religious law etc. My grandfather, Benjamin Tugendhaft changed his name to Tugg. He moved to Buffalo and later became a US citizen. My mother was raised in Buffalo although the family was in close touch wih all Toronto relatives. They all met in summer at Crystal Beach and had homes there. I myself was raised in Miami,Florida. When I did the Canadian research I was living with my husband and family in California.

If you want to continue to communicate my email address is ijaloway@yahoo.com. It might be easier than putting everything on this message board which is public.

Do you know about the Tugendhaft web page on yahoo? There are Tugendhaft's all over the world now. Supposedly we are all related. They meet in Israel every passover. I have not had the opportunity to go though. Irene

Wow, Meriam was your mother. I spoke to her I guess more than 18 years ago. In fact we spoke a number of times. I think she said she was an ESL teacher or something like that. It ws uncanny as I am a speech pathologist. She spoke toher sister in Isreal and they were just very uneasy about sharing information with a stranger on the phone.

I had found her address and phone number on line but I don't think she was very computer literate. It was a long time ago and many people of her generation did not use conmputers. Now I know why she was not intouch with any of the other Tugendhafts in Toronto.

How wonderful that you live in Jerusalem. Napthali and Joseph's parents were Moshe david and Dinah. I found those records in Resnow poland when we were there. It was a very lucky find because the book with the records had been in water and the bottom half of all the pages was destroyed. We were very lucky and Naphtali's birth record showing his parents was in the top half of the page and very clear. I thin both brothers must have loved their parents vey much because they both named children after them. Again I still think there is some Sephardic traditon although I don't know how we will ever find the connection.
