Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
I come from a line of Wests and a line of Brachers who lived in Surrey and neighboring areas. William West (b. 1792) and Jane Bracher (b. 1792) married and I descended from that relationship. Among their children, they named one son "Tuffen" (with an "E" as shown) and several of their children have the middle name "Tuffen." The name "Tuffen" continues in the West family for the next 4 generations. I've often wondered why the name came into the family and have assumed that at some point there was a marriage or other strong relationship between the Tuffin/Tuffen family and the Wests. If you ever run across a relationship between the West family or Bracher family and the Tuffin (or Tuffen) family, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks and Happy New Year! Elizabeth

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
Hi I would just like to let you know that my grandfather's name was GEORGE WEST TUFFIN. The family has tried to find out where his middle name came from but no one knows. We think he was born in the USA but no one is sure .He was born in the 1890's and died in 1964 in Wheatley Ontario Canada

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
Pat, That is an interesting mystery, isn't it? I have a West family line that uses the name "Tuffen" and you have a Tuffin family line that uses the name "West." The Wests who used the "Tuffen" name in England were a Quaker family in the late 1700s through the 1800s. Is there a chance that your grandfather came from England? Any Quaker ancestors from that time period? Perhaps someday we'll find a connection. If you are interested, do a Google search on "Tuffen West" using quotation marks just as shown. You will get about 24 references to Tuffen West, mostly about the books he illustrated in the 1800s. He was a naturalist and did beautiful colored illustrations of things seen through the microscope.
Good luck researching your family roots!

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
Pat, I know that this is a real long shot, but I found a marriage record for a George Tuffin in the Ontario, 1887-1899 Marriage Index Volume 3 that would be about the right timeframe to be the parents of your George West Tuffin. Is there a chance that your grandfather was born in Ontario, an eldest son who was named after his father??? Here's all the information in the record:
George Tuffin -- Ontario, 1887-1899 Marriage Index Volume 3 Spouse: Jepson, M. Jane Date of Marriage: Apr 10, 1889 Marriage Place: Selkirk
It could be worth checking out. Good luck! E.T.

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
Hi Pat, If there were any possibility that the marriage record I referenced were for your ancestors, it would be for your great grandparents, the parents of your George West Tuffin, not for your grandparents. This couple was married not long before your George West Tuffin was born. However, as I noted, it's a long shot. I just thought you might want to try following up on the possibility.
Best wishes,
Elizabeth

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
I, too, descend from William West and Jane Bracher. I have very little information on them. Would you be willing to share the information you have on William and Jane, their parents and children.

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
Elizabeth,
I'd be glad to if we can communicate offline. I don't know too much about their parents, but I have too much information about my own narrow line from William West and Jane Bracher to share here. Would you be willing to give me your e-mail address? If not, perhaps you could tell me which of William and Jane's children is your ancestor and I can let you know whether I have information about that specific line of descendants. I'm descended from their son Theodore West and most of the information that I have is about him and his descendants or about his brother Tuffen West, who apparently had no descendants. I am interested in learning about the other lines of descendants though. Yours truly, another Elizabeth!

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
I have a very likely connection between my Tuffins and a man surnamed WEST. I have not absolutely confirmed it, but it looks very very likely to me, so if anyone is still paying attention to this thread, feel free to contact me at boohergirls@gmail.comLanea

Re: Tuffen/Tuffin and West or Bracher family connection
There is a Quaker marriage between a Miss Tuffen and a man named Samuel West recorded in the St. James's Chronicle or the British Evening Post (London, England), August 14, 1788 - August 16, 1788; Issue 4254
