Hi,

We believe my husbands grandfather's family came from Ireland. Although we do not know where. Sorry.
I have been trying to get more information about my father-in-laws family. His father was adopted (although his birth name remained unchanged) Peter Tuffy. Born 1903? He was raised in an orphanage in Glasgow until he was old enough to work (aged approx 13-14yrs). However, the orphanage holding the his admission records burnt to the ground erasing any birth / parent information. He went on to marry Catherine (Kitty) and bore a son, also named Peter. We are all from Edinburgh, the only ones in the phone book, although I now live with Peter juniors son Mark Tuffy in CA, USA.

I'll need to ask my father-in-law for more information. We would be interested to know what you have found out because we were trying to explore the Tuffy's ancestry in Scotland, but did not uncover much. We did find out that there were no apparent links to any Scottish clans.

Thank you,
R.Tuffy

Hi Sarah-Jane,

I am researching my husband's family (Tuffy) and I am trying to find out if the Joseph Tuffy that you mention in this post is his great-great grandfather or not. The Joseph I am looking for was married to Elizabeth Ernsett in Sydney in 1982. They had children including Ada, Henry James, Vera, Joseph E. (my husband's great-grandfather) and Elsie.

I can also tell you that James Tuffy arrived in Melbourne in April 1855 aboard the ship Frederick, and in June went on to Sydney aboard the ship Telegraph. the shipping records have his wife's name as Ellen, not Mary Ellen though.

I hope we can help each other.

These look like the same Joseph. James Tuffy died 16-3-1897 aged 71 yrs and Ellen Ryan died 13-11-1902 aged 77 yrs. I think although her name was Mary Ellen she went by the name Ellen, and I have been told that her grave is marked as Ellen.

Where were they married? Is she actually listed as his wife so that we can assume they were married before they arrived in Australia, probably in Ireland before they left?

Peter

Hi Peter,

James & Ellen were both listed as Tuffy on their arrival in Melbourne in April 1855, so I presume that they were married earlier than that. I don't know what port their ship ("Frederick")departed from, so any assistance there would be great. I am assuming that the Mr & Mrs Tuffy (no initials given)who travelled Melbourne - Sydney on the SS Telegraph in June 1855 are the same people.

James was 29 and Ellen 27 when they landed in Australia, making their birth dates approx. 1827 and 1828 respectively.

I have his father's names as Francis Tuffy and her father as Martin Ryan. Any more detail here would be greatly appreciated.

regards
pamela
