cath. i can help tou with the origin of the tuff name,i have traced it thru england, scotland, normandy to norway.there are arguments as to the original spelling of the name, but even into this century, the majority of names listed as immigrants from norway are tuffs.as far as john is concerned i am having my own problems with joseph, whom i have traced back to his marriage in dorset, symondsbury in 1759. i have checked all records in england, and cant come up with a joseph brn abt. 1730.i believe the clan originally were given title to lands in scotland, then fell out of favor and fled to england.

Re: Tuff Surname: Edinburgh
I have traced the Tuff to 1792 when John Tough& wife Isabella Mill??at the baptist of Alexander Tough & this was at South Leith Church, Alexander Tough (diffrent spelling)but same person he married in 1825 at South Leith Church ,to Mary Gribinstone she was born 1791 Father John Gribinstone Mother Betty FlemingFrom Kettel parish Fife, I have followed this line. They moved to Leith were Alexander & John Tuff was born in 1843 , the census tells us in 1851 That Mary was a widow , so if this is part of your history maybe you can help me Thank you

Re: Tuff Surname: Edinburgh
Cath - thanks for replying and the info...sounds as though you have done a great deal of research. I am researching my mothers side currently so know more about that, so apologies in advance for limited info.
However, Tuff is my father's side which i haven't researched too much yet, but here is limited info i know -
There are at least 2 branches of the Tuff's living in and around Edinburgh whom are related. The family isn't too close knit so i don't know much other than my own directs.
Alexander Tuff was my father (12 3 1936 - 2010)baker.
My Mother was Elspeth Tuff MS Ellis ( 28 02 1932 - 10 06 2007).
Children are David (b1962 - present), Anne (b1963- present) and myself (b1964).
Grandparents were Alexander Tuff (11 10 1912 - 23 01 1986) lorry driver and Christina Tuff MS Ireland (02 10 1911 - 14 12 1976)
Great grandparents on grandfathers side were John Tuff (Cooper) and Jessie Mathers Tuff MS Campbell whom married in Leith, Edin on 20 01 1911
Great grandmother on grandmothers side (father not named on birth certificate) was Christina Forgan Dewar Ireland (afterwards Notman)
Sorry i don't know more at the moment but hope this helps

Re: Tuff Surname: Edinburgh
Hi Cath,
From your info i believe the Edinburgh Tuff's you are familiar with are not my direct family but almost certainly related. The Tuff's on my side are no longer here so it is difficult to get more than that unless i do separate research but from what i do have, i know that some of them were "Coopers" in the brewery and also that there are living relatives so good luck with that.
I'm going to try to conclude my research on my mother's side and i am only on a trial with this website so not sure how long we will be able to communicate but thanks for the info and good luck with you research
If i can be off further help just let me know
rgds Alex
