James Tuff, 20 years old, father Peter married
Jane Hutchinson, age 18 July 26, 1858 Durham, Sunderland, England.
Alexander Tough, 23, father James married Jane Carter, 22 January 1, 1884.
Jane and Alexander emigrated to South Africa
then to the U.S. Any info appreciated.

my records show Alexander was married 1st qtr 1844 ref 10a 681 Sunderland
quoting this ref will enable you to obtain his marriage cert from the General Register Office in London

I am not sure if you will get this as your messgae was posted quite a while ago. However James was my husbands Great-Great Grandfather. I have the histiry oof the family traced right back to the Vikings. If you are interested in finidng out more just e-mail my daughter. hope this is of interest to you.

Having read your thread posted recently,I told my uncle who is a Tuff.
He had been told a while back that he was descended from Vikings.
If you can shed any further light on the subject he would be extremely interested and most grateful.

your uncle iscorrect. tuff is a derivation of
touche,which is norman. after the invasion of england, the familywas found in abedeenshire,scotland where it atained a clan status. the coat of arms isilver with
a green lion rampant,the crestisa hand pointing with two fingers.

sharon, saw your message on family history.com. my grandfather was alexander tough b.1861. he married jane hutchison or carter in sunderland, eng. they lived in durban, south africa around 1893, where one son alexander b.1894 and my mother jane b. 1896 were born. they returned to eng. in 1898 and came to america in 1907 to rochester n.y. if this is of interest to you please contact me. mary lou wertz

could you please send me your info on tuff/vickings.My wife Susan Tuff G.G.Father john or Henry had a farm at Shawn ? in Kent he had a son called John who married Margret Mcavoy they had three boys John or Jack , Harry and Fred
the girls were Margaret, Kathleen, Winnie and Hilda.

hey not sure this is the right place to put this message but, I have been having alot of problems with the Tough side of my family John Tough born in 1866 mother Isabella Smith born 1833 Deskford, Scotland his father John Tough born 1830 in Botriphnie, Scotland his father Alexander Tough born in Gartly, Scotland about 1802 married a Helen Stuart they lived in Starhead 1841, 1851, 1861 on one cencus Alexander is Touch need to share wih others of this line I lost John Tough 1866 one I think he may have gone to England then Canada before the US but, not sure he just didn't die in Scotland is all I have found from Scotspeople, there is a John Tough b about 1865 left liverpool for canada destination Portland any connection greatly appreciated k.chb@hotmail.com thanks K
