If you go to my tree and look for August and Auguste Tunge you could see if they look anything like your relatives? Approximately 30 years prior to August and Auguste coming to the U.S.A., August’s brother, Karl emigrated from Germany as a stowaway on a ship, Therefore, there is no record of him ever arriving. Karl was born on 14 January, 1849 in Pommern.
The last Tünge (August Ferdinand) we are aware of lived in Schievelbein, Prussia.
The following information was retrieved from a Heinz Tunge in Germany. My brother had written to relatives in Germany & Poland (the former Shivelbein, Pomerania, now Swidwin, Poland). This is the info . . . . . . .
“Christlieb, Christian, Leberecht and Ferdinand were brothers or cousins in all probability but that is not testified.”
“Apparently there (in Boltenhagen, Rutzenhagen, Schivelbein) were several “Ferdinand Tunge’s”: August Ferdinand Tunge, 8-11-1844; August Ferdinand Carl Tunge 2-17-1850; and Carl Ferdinand August Tunge 3-6--1851. He figures they are brothers or closely related.
A brother of his grandfather, Carl Friedrich Albert Tunge, name was “Herrmann Tuenge.” He immigrated to America and lived in St. Louis. His son is “Theo” or “Theodor” and his profession is/was a pastor.”
I have two questions: (1) Can you find any mention of a Hermann Tünge in your genealogical information?
Gellert's passenger list . . . is the ship that August, Auguste, and family arrived on in New York on 1 April 1893. Unfortunately, Ellis Island can't find this record today and the copy didn't go all the way to the right side of the page. Therefore, I only see: "Prussia," then "Schwi___ I assume it is Schivelbein. My brother vaguely remembers Uncle August telling him once that the name of Shievelbein had changed to Swidwin, Poland, so I am wondering if "Schwi____" was one of the many names of the city.
P.S. if you Google Sylt you will find it to be an island and city just southwest of the German/Denmark border. You can access the German phone book at:
