The information I have concerning the Tuell family is as follows:
In 1640 a man named Twelves came to Quincy, Mass. He had many children and in the recording of their name one or some of them ended up with Tuell, Tuel, Tull, Twell, etc.
The old man died about 1695 and his children took off - some of them heading south. The next trace I could find was James Tull in Coventry, MD who was the father of John Tuell. Point of interest - Coventry later became Baltimore, MD.
John Tuell married Mary Mason of VA. George Rogers Clark came through VA recruiting an army to go north of Pittsburgh, PA and protect George Washington's army from attack by the British from the northwest. A lot of the wifes traveled along with their husbands who had joined the army - as it was with John and Mary Tuell.
The Army went to Pittsburgh and built rafts and traveled down the Ohio River to a place called the Falls Of The River. Just below the falls was an island Called Corn Island, The Army settled on the Island and left some of the troops and their wifes their to build, on shore, the settlement of Louisville, KY. (There are many Tuells in the Louisville area. Each year they have a get-to-gather and tell stories of the Tuell Clan.
John mad Mary Tuell had a son named Jesse who made a trip to VA and NC that could have been to visit the Tuells of that Area. And, those are my people - or he could have started them.
Jesse came back to Louisville and traded 40 acres of land for a shotgun and took off north to Indiana. There are many Tuells in that state and they spread across the nation from there to the west and dropped south to all the other states.
I have found Tuell gravesites in Riverside and Lake Ellsinore, CA.
I have been able to trace my family tree back to Jamestown, VA and further back to Alexander the Great - but that was on the other side of the family.
I hope I have been able to help you a little. Please overlook any spelling, etc.
Ramsey Marcus Tuell
