WOW! I came here on a lark - What a coincidence! Thomas Tuell (didn't realize it was spelled with 2 L's) was MY great great great grandfather. Yes, married to Mary Ann Lee in Orange, VA. They had two sons that I know of - Issac Stewart and (believe it or not) Socrates Tuel. They may have had more children. Issac was a confederate soldier and was held as a prisoner of war in Maryland. He is buried in Orange with his wife - Sarah Jane Ferneyhough. My paternal grandmother was a Tuel and a decendent of Issac. I live in Montana however my parents still live in Virginia and are currently trying to track down the Tuel history. They have gotten as far back as Thomas - I will contact them to get more info. I'm not sure how much info they have collected. I am so completely bowled over to find this message and I don't have any more info right here at my fingertips but I will get back to you. By the way, how did you come across the spelling of Tuel with 2 L's. I have been very curious as to the origin of the Tuels. I have heard everything from Irish to French to Dutch. I have actually read that Tuel with the double L is Irish. Can you verify this? Anyway - hope to chat with you again soon. Your distant relative - Michelle Brown

Hi Michelle,
Good to hear from you.I'll try to answer your questions about our Thomas, but actually have much more info on the Tuel's of this line to give you at a later date. Let me start by asking the names of your parents and your paternal Grandmother Tuel. We share a direct lineage to Thomas. Now, here's the story on him. You are indeed of IRISH heritage, not Dutch or French. Thomas immigrated to America from Ireland sometime in the 1820's. This is new info just found on Isaac's death certificate received from Richmond last week. Up to that point I had been searching for him in old census records, wills, etc. could not find him anywhere. Now I know why...he wasn't in this country yet. Now, to locate a point of origin in Ireland will not be so easy. We have no idea if he came as an adult or as a child with parents. I'll begin that search soon, but it will take a lot of time because I have no county to begin my search. I'll be needing help on this one, but I know where to get it locally. If your parents would like to contact me, we would love to hear from them. My e-mail address is frances.tuel@gte.net Could you possibly be related to Levi and Ethel Mae Brown? Levi's mother and my husband's father were brother sister. We write often recently saw one another at the Owen-Top Tuel Reunion in Unionville, PA in August. You must be their daughter. The coinsidence is just to strong.
Thomas' name is spelled with two l's on his marriage registration in the Orange County Courthouse records. He married Mary Ann Lee on Christmas Day 1830. Isaac was born Jan 26,1833 and married Sarah Jane Ferneyhough on March 3, 1857 in Orange County also. He and Sarah Jane had seven children. I'll give you the names, dates, etc later. Isaac Sarah Jane broke up housekeeping near the turn of the century and never lived together again as husband wife. He went to live with their oldest child, John Pendleton Tuel and Sarah Jane went to live with their daughter Josephine, called Josie. What caused this permanent seperation, I do not. But I do know it seperated the family...with the children chosing sides in the situation. I have Isaac's gravestone rubbing, have visited his grave at the Graham Cemetery in Orange. Also have Sarah's obit.
I have many records of this family.... census, marriage obits. I would be glad to share them with you your parents. If you are Levi's daughter, he's already seen some of what I have. If you are not, tell your parents our line decends like this: Thomas Tuell to Isaac Tuel to George Allen Tuel to George Lester Tuel to James Lester Tuel (my husband).Thomas is his g.g.grandfather. Your parents are of the same generation as Jim. I am working hard, in my retirement, to compose a book on the family. Nothing published, just copies of what we have found in our research for those in the family who have been kind enough to offer interest and encouragement. Believe me, not everyone is interested. We have Isaac Socrates' military histories from the Nat'l Archives in DC even a picture of Sarah Jane and her English heritage all the way back to Checkley, England. I hope to hear from you soon and we wish you happy hunting in your family search. Do write back soon. Regards, Fran Tuel

Hello Francis! So glad to hear back from you! I noticed that the date of your posting was July and I was afraid that you were no longer checking the boards. Yes, I am Levi's daughter. So, as you know, Odie Florence Tuel was my grandmother. She was one of George Allen Tuel's Children.

Glad to hear definitively that we're Irish - I felt that was the case but I've not been able to verify it. I travel quite a bit and was just in Ireland and Scotland this past June. They were both great places to visit! Many immigrants left Ireland in the 1800's due to the great potato famine. A fungus which invaded the potato crop and destroyed the harvests. They lost a few million people to starvation and a million or so more to immigration. Most went to the US or to Canada. The English treated the Irish abominably during this time forcing them to pile useless miles of stone walls and do forced construction work to get food aid. Many died from this hard labor in addition to starvation. The Irish really do welcome the descendents of these early immigrants back to Ireland. In fact the President's house keeps an eternal light burning in the window for immigrants to "find their way back home". If you can prove that your grandparents were immigrants you can even apply for and carry an Irish passport. Their are many genealogical societies in Ireland that help people to trace their ancestors. I wish I had know about Thomas when I was there! Anyway, I think I still have a list of some of these groups and some of them will do searches for you. I will dig that stuff up. We'll see what we can find!
Here's a note on Socrates. He is buried at the Blue Run Baptist Church in Somerset, VA - Orange Co. This church is at the intersection of Rte 20 and 231. It is the Lee family cemetery. Ironically enough, the cemetery had been lost - yes lost. A local man bulldozed the area and cleared it for a garden. He gardened there for a few years until one day he turned up a gravestone. I guess that brought an abrupt end to the gardening. Thomas is buried in an unmarked plot near the foot of Issac's grave which you have already located. My folks just recently found it with the help of a cemetery map from Preddy funeral home in Orange.

My folks do not have e-mail however I do. It's Euderma@aol.com I will have to add you to my list of acceptable mailers as I have had trouble with unwanted vulgar mail and have had to put on some restrictions.

Anyway, great to hear from you! Take care!
Love Michelle
