I was told "Tuel" was of French Hugenot(spelling?) ancestry. They were supposed to have immigrated to American as a result of religions opppression.

read your message and would like to give you a hint.most of the spellings of tuel,tuell,tewell,toole,tuly,and tull are in someways conected.the origin seems to be irish or scottish.also the tuells have info. on them at the filson club in louisville,ky.as alot of the tuells were there in the 1800.if i can be of further assisstant please let me know.but try starting your research with the name tull as this seemed to be first spelling.

Seeing as I'm replying to a post nearly a decade old and no new info on this board, I've decided to post some of my husband's Tuell family history. His paternal grandmother was Ellen Eliza (Nellie) Tuell, born 5/3/1873 in Calais Maine, Died 12/5/1961 in Detroit MI, Married 6/22. 1896 in Taunton, MA to Samuel James Townsend.

Her father was John Ovid Tuell, b 7/7/1839 Cooper ME, d. 6/8/1910 Brockton, MA, maried Clarinda Jane Aldrich B4/5/1857 Baring Maine, d. 6/4/1922 Brockton, MA

Grandfather Abathar Tuell, b 2/23/1803 St. David's NB, died 3/12/1890 Plantation #14, Maine married Electa Ingraham Homan b. 11/18/1810 Andover, ME d. 4/24/1894

greatgrandfather John Tuell 3rd b 12/27/1773 Taunton, MA d. 3/22/1836 Plantation #14, Maine Married 5/10/1796 Paris Maine, Rebecca Doten b. 12/27/1770 Plymouth MA, d. 10/23/1857 plantation #14, Maine (parents were Samuel Doten and Mary Cooke)

Great greatgrandfather John Tuell, 2nd b ca 1747 Taunton, MA d. 4/12/1812, Paris Maine married Lydia Makepeace b ca 1748 Taunton? MA? d. 3/8/1840, Paris Maine

We have heard this part of the family were loggers.

I recently discovered that the spelling is Tewell as well. My Tewells came out of Maryland, into Ky, and then into Indiana.

I am a tewell descendant of William and Eleanor Edmonston. Their have been several ways of spelling it in the family. This includes Tuel.

only way to know for sure is a DNA test. I'm also a Tewell and some of its members spell it Tuell. I looked the spelling of Tewell and its origin is welsh although they did settle in Ireland during the Norse invasions. You are free to look at my tree. Still working out the kinks. They originate in Maryland which I'm working on now.
