Just found this interesting website. I am a "Tschan" from Switzerland and born here.
To correct one previous message, there are 3 family-branches named Tschan in Switzerland. As we have a pretty efficient system here with an office per village/area listing, filing and archiving all births, deaths and marriages, we can trace our relatives far back.
The name Tschan is listed in 3 of these offices as 3 different families (which might be the same at the end):
1) Tschan from Kleinluetzel, Canton Solothurn, not far from
Basel. Close to France and close to Alsace in France (one
message mentions a family from there)
2) Tschan from Fraubrunnen, Canton Berne/Bern (capital city).
3) Tschan from Sigriswil, Canton Berne, Bernese Oberland
(in the Alps).
I belong to the 3rd group.
Anyone who would like to know more may contact me by mail.... .

Guten Tag

Fred Tschan, geb. 1920 in Estland, 2. Gottfried Tschan, geb. 1875, lebte in Russland und später im Baltikum, 3. Gottfried Tschan, geb. 1848 (?), Lehrer in Gunten und Bruder des Kunstmalers Hans Rudolph Tschan, 4. Daniel Tschan(n), Lehrer in Merligen und Hünibach, Erbauer des Hotels Du Lac in Gunten, 5., 6., und 7., alle Daniel mit Vornamen und alle "Schulmeister" in Merligen/Sigriswil.

Sehen Sie eine verwandtschaftliche Beziehung? M. frndl. Grüssen, Maja Kusano-Tschan

Guten Abend!

Wo wohnen Sie?
Liebe Grüsse

HI, I was wondering if there is any connection in our last names.I have read that some times letters have been added or dropped.
I know my husbands gggrandfather came from somewhere in the Alsce-Lorrine area . But, I'm having a hard time finding where. And the Tschaenn name could have came from Switzerland.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
Jennifer

Good evening

The name Tschaenn is fully unknown to me. In fact it is easy to trace such a name here: www.tel.search.ch is a site on which 98 % of the swiss telephones are registered.
If you enter Tschaenn under "Name" (German word for name) and then click on "Eintrag suchen" (German expression for "search repertory") it will tell you "keine Einträge gefunden" (almost top page, below red text "Telefonbucheintraege zu Tschaenn"). This means none found....!
Using Tschann or Tschan you ll find plenty of us!

In France (mainly Alsace) and Germany you ll find lots of Tschan and Tschann. In Austria I discovered plenty of Tschann but only very few Tschan. Nowhere the name Tschaenn was found.
Thinking a bit about it, one of your ancestors might have come and said his name. Your local accent could have made it sound like "Tschaenn"...and therefore they modified there name. This theory would really make sense to me! Tschann from Alsace - Eastern France (example Strassbourg is a city in that area) situated just to the German border and north of Switzerland!.

Hope this helps.
Greetings
Laurent

Guten Tag

My cousin and I are seeking information on her "Tschan" line from Berne, Switzerland. All we have is her grandmother's maiden name and the year of birth and death. We know she came with her family,to the U.S., in about 1915. Her name was Freda Ann Tschan, born about
2 Feb 1900 in Berne, Switzerland (although a 1920 Census she indicated she was born 1891, was a Naturalized Citzen (apparently through her parents).Died in Portland, Mult. Co., OR 27 Jul 1928.

The name Tschaenn was used in Alsace in my family for a couple of generations. First it was Tschaen, Then Tschaenn, then Tschaen again. Some people write it Tschän.

Hi to you
Its rather funny that I went back to my old messages. I have been communicating with someone in the past on here.
The following things are important to know:
Its quite easy to find someones roots here. Each family is listed in a village / city administration. The Tschan families have 4 different roots, as far as I know. Mine, comes from Sigriswil, Berne (close to Thun) above lake Thun in Bernese Oberland. Berne is a city and a County/State within Switzerland.
A 2nd branch comes from Fraubrunnen, as well in County/State Berne. The 2 other possible family branches are from Holderbank, Solothurn (County/State of Solothurn) and Kleinlützel/Solothurn (same county). If she was from Berne she might be related to myself. My Greatgrandfather emmigrated from Sigriswil to the north of Berne County into the area where lots of watches are produced. That hilly area is known as Jura.
I know that he had a brother though. Eventually your family is a decendant of him.
Probably the adminstration of Sigriswil could help. As I dont know if they speak English, I dont mind helping you. Please write to my private email address and I ll send you my private post address to where you could send copies of papers which I would send to the administration of Sigriswil (Gemeindeveraltung, ZIP 3655 Sigriswil).

Looking forward hearing from you

Laurent
