A Tschan who left Russia during the 1800's
I heard from my aunt that our family is partly of Hebrew descent. According to what she was told by her grandmother, my great-grandmothers father left Russia during the 1800's. He was a tailor for the tsar. Because of tense political situations many Jews felt endangered. The tsar assured him that he would be safe. But, he decided to leave Russia. He first went to Austria. There he married a "gentile". Her parents were opposed. They may have been Lutheran. Afterwards, they moved to Philadelphia where he operated a very prestigious tailor shop. He had three daughters. They married Americans. If you have any information about this Tschan, please post it on the messsage board. Subject: a Tschan in Philadelphia

My great-grandmother was Amalia Tschan, born around 1860 in Michelbach, Baden, Germany. Her Father was Sebastian and her grandfather was Benjamin. Since Tschan is such an unusual name, I would be interested in seeing if we have a connection.
|
Was your Tschan Jewish? I heard that my ancestor left Russia, went to Austria, than later moved to Philadelphia. I have found some russian Tschans, on the internet.
|
My Tschans as far back as Benjamin were Catholic. Benjamin was born in 1790 in Michelbach, Germany and listed as Catholic. His wife was Maria Ema Bastian. I found a Severin Tschan emigrating from Michelbach in 1872. I assume he is a relative of Amalia Tschan.

I have discovered that my Tschan relative was not from Russia, but from Austria. Her name was Matilda Tschan. She was the daughter of a Lutheran minister. She married Jacob Otto, a Russian Jew. They had a child in Philadelphia in 1893 named Matilda Anne (Tschan) Otto. They had another daughter named Clara, a son named Harry, and another named John.

I have more accurate information now. My tschan ancestors came out of New York. Prior to that they came out of Germany or France. They were not Jewish. Jacob Otto who married Matilda Tschan was an Eastern European Jew.
|
I was mistaken. My Matilda Tschan was from New York. She was not from Russia. And, she was not Jewish (her husband was Jewish)

There are at least two threads of Tschan in Switzerland. May have to do with the German and Austrian Tschan's too.
|
My Tschan family is from the Black Forest or Baden, Michelbach, Germany. They were Catholic.
