Hi Tom, Here are the facts I have:
Amalia Tschan march 9, 1859-december 4,1893) michelbach
She married Dominic Glasstatder from Freiolsheim in NYC in 1885. She had 3 children in the USA, one died. Dominic died in NYC in1892. She returned to Michelbach in 1892, had a daughter who died in Aug. 1893. She married in August a man names Wendelin Hirth (perhaps a relative) She died that December. Hirth refused her daughters and they were left orphans in Germany. Her parents:

Sebastian Tschan(Jan 27,1824-oct 15,1870)
Katarina Wick(April 30,1830-july 19,1899)
Married Oct 25,1849

Their parents:
Benjamin Tschan 1790-1862
Maria Ema Bastian (1795-

Michael Wick(1785-1867)
Dorothea Hirth(1788-1654) All in Michelbach

Are there any records further back on these families?
Did Amalia have any sibblings?
Is Wendelin Hirth a relative from her grandmother's side?

I would appreciate anything that you might find?
Thanks, Louise

OK, I looked through the microfilms before I saw this post! Just 10 mins, but found a lot. I found Amalia within about 1 minute, then scanned backwards for siblings (not forwards yet). Send me an email and I will send you a scan of her baptism/birth record.

Amalia Tschan b. 3/9/1859, parents Sebastian and Catharina (the traditional spelling in all of these records) Wick.

Hilar (latin Hilarius!) b. 10/22/1857
Nicolaus b. 12/5/1853
Victoria b. 11/10/1849 - that's as far back as I went

Then I searched for the marriage record, and scanned quickly but didn't find it. I'm sure it's there. I saw 3-4 other Tschan's marrying (and having children) about the same time - probably Sebastian's siblings. Tschan is somewhat uncommon in these registers, so easier to find.

Hirth is a very common name. In my own tree, which is six generations (at least) deep in Michelbach, I found a number of cases where relatives married, but never when it was obvious they were relatives. The relationship was always at least 3-4 generations back. I doubt that Wendelin is an obvious relative of Amalia - but I'm sure there is a relationship somewhere back in time. In fact, I'm sure you and I are related somewhere. Philomena Bastian was my gggrandmother. Ursula Hirth was my ggggggrandmother.

The Michelbach registers are very easy to read (until you get to the later years and German fraktur, which I have unfortunately gotten pretty good deciphering), very complete, and start in 1730. Any day now I will get the Rotenfels microfilms that go back to 1616. I suspect but don't know for sure that Rotenfels was the parent for Michelbach. Fingers crossed, I should know soon.

From this point, I'd love to help you more, but I will need to prioritize my time. I WILL get the other siblings, and I will get a copy of Sebastian/Catharina's marriage from the register - prob 15 mins. Since you don't have names previous to Amalia's grandparents, it would be fun to find them and determine their parents (probably pretty easy from marriage records). Another 15 mins. I can probably do that tomorrow. Other than that, what do you want to know the most? Probably two more generations in the registers, maybe three. I'll do what I can.

Do you have a Mormon family history center nearby? these registers would cost you (4) times $3 to order for a month. Happy to give you more info to order them - or help you decipher some of the records!

Email me, let's stay in touch, and I'll email back when I get more info (plus the birth record I have now).

Just realized that Victoria was born days after their marriage. That is very, very unlikely in very Catholic Michelbach. More likely the marriage date is wrong, or Victoria is not their child. I love a mystery!

Hi, Louise, it's been a while and I've been busy - including a trip to Michelbach, and an agreement with the town that I would finish a complete analysis of their parish records for them by their village festival in 2006 (gulp). You can see the results on the website that I'm keeping up-to-date - currently finished from 1730-1860 (40 years to go).

We share a number of ancestors, cousin!

Hi Ben,

My name is Mike Fuchs. I live in Tucson, Az. I read your message board regarding a family member(your great x2 grand father-I believe) who was a tailor to the Russian Tzars. Apparently he immigrated to Philadelphia in the late 1800's. I read this with interest since my great x2 grand father was also a tailor to the Russian Tzars and immigrated to Philadelphia in 1890. His name was Lazar Schenitz(may have been Schenitzen while in Russia). He was apparently married twice and had 5 children with his second wife, Chaika Pearl Reichmann. His children were Jacob, John, Anna, Dora(my great grand mother) and Leopold. I am told that he lived in the Summer Palace (TSARSKOYE SELO)while working for the Tzar's family. I wonder of our great x2 grand fathers knew each other, both in Russia and Philadelphia. If you have any information on the tailors to the Tzars I would appreciate your helping me with it.

Please let me know if this sounds familiar,

Regards,

Mike Fuchs
