While visiting Yahoo Falls, McCreary County, Kentucky, I came across the tombstone of Peter Troxel. I am not related to Mr. Troxel in any way but thought someone might like to have this photo.

The grave is located on the corner of Rt. 700 at the entrance to Yahoo Falls.

Steve,
My Father, Brother and I all had copies of you Dad's original and follow-up Troxel Trails books. They were the jumping off point of my interest in my ancestry. Tell him "Hello" for me next time you see him. Your father and mine were business associates back in Oklahoma City.
Jim Troxel, Chicago, IL

Hi, I am interested in your father's book. I am a descendant of Christian Trachsel of Bern, Switzerland and I have ancestors that had lived in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska to name a few. It would be interesting to know how close we are related.

"Troxel(l) Tails and Trails" new address

My father, Richard M. Troxel, spent 46 years researching the Troxel (Troxell) family tree. Twenty years after he wrote his first book, "Troxel Trails" [which by the way sold out the entire production run], he updated it with new and corrected information in "Troxel(l) Tails and Trails." Since he is now 94 years old, he has moved to live with my sister's family. However, I have custody of the remaining copies of his book -- along with an addendum that takes our direct line back to 1527 to Peter Trachsel in Berne Canton, Switzerland.
If anyone is interested in obtaining one of the remaining copies of his book please email me at Troxel.Trails@gmail.com

Burckhard Trachsel was a "councillor" in Berne, Switzerland, in 1367. My father's book "Troxel(l) Tails and Trails" can link us directly back Peter Trachsell in 1527 at a town 5 miles south of Lenk, Switzerland. Despite extensive research, he was not able to trace a direct link between Burckhard and Peter.
Dad also found out that there are 12 different lines of immigrants to this country. We may all come from the same line in the old country... or not. In the same way the British surname "Smith" was given to various unrelated blacksmiths, so Trachsell (which is the name of a forest in Switzerland) may also have been taken by unrelated people. We have no way of knowing.
If you would like a copy of Dad's book, reply to this message.

My father spent 46 years researching the Troxel line. His book has Troxel information back to 1536 in Switzerland. My ancestors lived for a time in Missouri. The book is a hard back called "Troxel(l) Tails and Trails" by Richard M. Troxel. Reply to this message if you are interested in a copy.

Re: Catherine Troxell of John & Mary connect: Borum, Bourm, Rolls, Gates, Beers, O'Shell, fitspatrick

I am posting this asking for assistance with my family tree Research. There seems to be many families including mine linked back to the Troxell family.

Bourm, Borum, Rolls, Roles, Rowles, Beers, O'Shell, Gates, Holdsworth.

With the number of "Johns" and "Catherine's" I have seen many conflicting trees, papers, and records for the Troxell family itself.

This is in regards to Catherine Troxell (I think she is the tenth Catherine in the Troxell family) born 1810. Her parents were John Jr. Troxell and Mary Matthews, in Pennsylvania. she seems to have been married 3 times and 8 children from 2 husbands. I believe they are from White Township, Cambria County, PA.

John Jr. Troxell Parents where:
John Sr. Troxell (1749-1777) from Bucks, PA
Elizabeth Groff (1746-1825) from Montgomery, Ohio

John Sr. Troxell Parents where:
Michael Troxell (1721-1772) came from Wolfersheim, Germany to Philadelphia, PA
Anna Margaret Saeger (1721-1770) Came from Reichenbach, Germany to Philidelphia, PA.

Catherine Troxell Spouse':
Thomas Rolls Rowles Roles
Mr. Barum
Thomas Fitzpatrick

I have found lots of information on the children's families, but working back to get records or data on this Catherine Troxell and her husbands hasn't been as successful.

*note: just about everyone in Catherine's family seems to have spelling issues. You will see siblings spelling their own surnames differently.

Specific Questions:

1) Catherine's first husband is Thomas Rolls Roles Rowles and where is he from and who are his parents? There are several Thomas Rolls running around Pennsylvania at this time.

The surname has been spelled as Rolls, Roles, Rowles, Rolles.

2) Was Thomas and Catherine's marriage ended by his death or divorce? I have not seen any marriage records or divorce, death records.

3) Catherine's second husband:Who is Mr Boram? Where did he come from and are there any records of their marriage? Who are his parents? This is the person I am related to. Our family written genealogy record says his name was Richard Borum. but I have not found any records of this person in Pennsylvania. There is a Barum family in Pennsylvania at this time (1800 -1840). Note: his son with Catherine is also named Richard Borum.

The surname has been spelled as: Borum, Bourm, Barum, Boram, Borham, Boarm.

4) How and why did Mr. Boram die? Catherine is listed as "widowed" in 1850.

5) Her child Perry Boram only shows up in the 1850 census, and I cannot find him elsewhere, after the 1850 census. What happened to him? I assume he died as an infant. Have not located the grave.

6) What prompted her and her sons to head west? In 1854 was what was called "The Grand Excursion" which was opening of the west via the Mississippi to	LeClaire, Scott county Iowa. The settled there at this time. I know she was receiving payments from her fathers will. Her father died 1849 and mother died 1850, sometime between 1850 and 1854 she headed west with the children Soon after her father John Jr. Troxell died and left her some money and her mother died.

7) Where is Catherine buried? Her last known residence was in the 1885 Kansas state census as Catherine Fitzpatrick. She married Thomas Fitzpatrick in Rock Island, Illinois in 1856. Thomas Fitzpatrick died before 1885, as Catherine is listed as "Widowed".

There are a ton of Catherine Fitzpatrick's and Catherine Troxell buried in the US...its hard to locate the correct grave, and would it be with Thomas Fitzpatrick, she buried in Kansas or Iowa, or Pennsylvania?

Below is all the data I have collected so far on Catherine and her children. There are many families connected here, and I hope we can find some answers that I am sure many others have asked before me.

Thank you

Catherine Troxell
Born about 1810 in Pennsylvania
Children:
Elizabeth Rolls b.1828 d.1905
Margaret Rolls b.1834
John Rolls b.1835 d.1922
Fyanna Rolls b.1835 d.1910
Hannah Jane Rolls b. 1838
Richard Andrew Borum b.1846 d.1928
Lafayette D Borum b.1847 d.1920
Perry Boram b.1849
1840 census White Township Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
"Catherine Boles" head of household with 7 household:
Male under 5: 1
Female under 5: 1
Female 5 to 9: 2
Female 10 to 14: 1
Female 20 to 29: 1
Female 40 to 49: 1

The US Federal 1850 census
White Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
Catherine Boram 40
Richard Boram 5
Perry Boram 1
Margaret Roles 16
Hanah Roles 12
Mary Troxel 68

Iowa State Census 1854
LeClaire, Scott County Iowa
Catherine Borum
Illinois Marriages 1851 to 1900

Catharine Boram marries Thomas Fitzpatrick
Jan 25, 1856 Rock Island, Illinois.

1860 US Census
LeClaire, Scott County, Iowa

Thomas Fitspatrick 45
Catharine Fitzpatrick 46
Richard Borum 15
Lafayette Borum 13

1885 Iowa State Census
January 1885
Widowed
Richland, Jasper, Iowa
Catherine Fitzpatrick 72
Abigail Faylor 72

1885 Kansas State Census
March 1st 1885
Walnut, Phillips County, Kansas
Widowed
Richard Bourm 38
AE Bourm 37
Perry Bourm 17
CA Bourm 15
MA Bourm 13
Catherine Bourm 12
Mary Bourm 10
Milton Bourm 8
R Bourm 6
Lizzie Bourm 4
Albert Bourm 2
C Fitzpatrick 67

The Children of Catherine Troxell

Elizabeth Rolls Roles Rowles
b.7 MAY 1828 Pennsylvania Clearfield Goshen d.19 OCT 1905 Pennsylvania Clearfield Clearfield.
Mother: Catherine Troxell
Father: Thomas Rolls Rowles Roles.
Married: George Henry O'Shell and maybe William Miller?
1860 Pennsylvania Cambria White twnshp.
1870 Pennsylvania Huntingdon Warriors Mark.
1880 Pennsylvania Cambria Reade.

Margaret Rolls Roles Rowles
d.15 SEPT 1833 Pennsylvania d.7 JAN 1914 Pennsylvania Thomastown
Mother: Catherine Troxell
Father: Thomas Rolls Roles Rowles
Married: William Gates
1850 Pennsylvania Cambria White twnshp.
1852 Married William Gates.
1880 Pennsylvania Blair Snyder.
1900 Pennsylvania Blair Snyder.

Fyanna Rolls Roles Rowles
b.1835 Pennsylvania Somerset d.10 MAY 1910 Pennsylvania Cambria Reade.
Mother: Catherine Troxell
Father: Thomas Rolls Roles Rowles
Married: Benjamin F Beers
1857 married Benjamin F Beers or 1861
1880 Pennsylvania Cambria White twnshp.
1900 Pennsylvania Cambria Reade.
1910 Pennsylvania Clearfield Beaver Valley.
1910 Pennsylvania Cambria Reade.

John Rolls
b.1 JAN 1835 Pennsylvania Cambria d.21 JUN 1922 Iowa Wright Iowa City.
Mother: Catherine Troxell
Father: Thomas Rolls Roles Rowles
Married: Mary Steinman
1862 military us civil war enlisted Scott county Iowa.
Wow, this was a long time ago - wonder if you are still there? Mel's father was Alexander D. Troxel b. Illinois 1821-1872, mother was Anna Elizabeth Ashcraft 1828-1902. They were married in Iowa 1846. He was my great-great grandfather. Mel's siblings include my great-grandfather Thomas; also, Denver, Margaret, Amanda, Mary Frances, and two or three more I have not been able to positively confirm from a list my grandfather recited about 30 years ago...Let me know if you need anything else.

There is 10th gen Catharine Troxel that was born to John and Mary Troxel.. She was married to a Lilly then a man named "Rowles" and had children with him, then she married a "Mr. Barum" (according to LDS archives) or "Borum" in Cambria Pennsylvania. Then she moved west without her husband to Iowa on the way getting married to a Thomas Fitspatrick at Rock Island Illinois.

She settled in LeCaire Iowa.

Her x3 sons with barum/borum where:
Richard, Lafayette, and Perry.

Richard is me great, great, great grandfather and my grandfather is named after him "Richard Andrew Borum"

looking for info on Mr. Barum/Borum who Catharine Barum/Borum (Troxel, Lilly, Rowles) married in Pennsylvania. All the borum children where born there. Some how he just drops from the records. It looks like Catharine Participated in the "The Grand Excursion" in 1854.

Thank you.

Re: Troxel/Troxell in Iowa Records

My old notes show Henry and Leetha (Anderson) Troxell were parents of:
Strander/Strawder (1815-1861). He and Lucinda had at least two children Evalena (b1841 Illinois who married John L. Davis in 1857, Wapello County, IA) and daughter Harriet (b1847 Iowa).
Daniel Troxell (b. 1818 KY) married Susannah McCale/McCall (born ca1827, OH) and married abt 1844 and had at least the children: Lavina (b 1846 IA); Frazier b.1848 Wapello Co, married 3 Nov 1878 to Nancy Eller (d/o Harvey E and Mary Caroline Vannoy Eller) and had issue; and daughter Ann E. b. 22Jan 1851 Wapello Co, who married Barnett Cleveland Eller (brother of Nancy) on 14 Dec 1869, and had issue Hugh B; Lulu; Marguerite; and Troy Clevelend.
Henry and Leetha had at least 10 children total:
Sameul
Elizabeth
Strawder/Strander
Daniel
Julia
David
Catherine
Nancy Jane
Rebecca
Matthias.

So this makes Perry Moore Troxell a first cousin to the children of Henry and Leetha through their common ancestor Frederick and Anna (Hess) Troxell.

The Albert you listed not sure who you mean, but Matthias Troxell married "Dicey" and had at least for children including a son Albert born 1844, Iowa.

The Alexander you listed, not sure who you mean but there was an Alexander D. Troxell who married Ann Eliza and had issue at least 5 children. He was son of Frederick and Jane Cox Troxell, and brother of Perry Moore Troxell.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for asking.
respectfully
p9
Alexander D. Troxell married Ann Elizabeth Ashcraft. One of their sons was William Anderson Troxel, sometimes known as Anderson Troxel. Alexander D. and Ann Elizabeth had three children, all born in Missouri, Viola, Clara Mae and William. I have found very little on Viola, Clara Mae married Perry Franklin Reynolds, perry is buried in Dolores, Clorado and Clara Mae is buried in Gypsum, Eagle County, Colorado. William is buried in Livingston, Montana. Clara Mae and Perry F. Reynolds had four children. Marie (Mary) born in Rico, Co., died and is buried in Sonoma, Ca, Perry, born in 1896 and died in infancy, also in Rico, Myrtle, born October 1898 in Rico and died in Fullerton, Ca. Rose Ann Reynolds, my dad's mother was born in Rico on Jan. 16, 1901 and married my grandfather Quinton Joseph Sagrillo prior going to France during WWI. They had 3 sons all born in Colorado and all 3 still living. Jack, my dad was born in Telluride in 1920, his brother Robert was born in 1921 also in Telluride and Quinton II was born in 1926 in Avon, Co.
If more info is needed on the Troxel line, please let me know!
Doug Sagrillo quinton994@ msn.com.

family of Leland W. Troxel

The 1940 census is very confusing concerning the family of Leland Wilson Troxel. Leland is the son of Jennie Leon Goodwin and John Wilson Troxel. He died in Polk Co., IA in 1981.

First, Ancestry.com has transcribed the surname as TROXAL instead of TROXEL. Not a bad choice, given the writing on the 1940 census form.

Secondly, while it is clear that Leland is married, it is not precise whom he married. There are two possibilities, both daughters of Minnie DODD: Farge, b. 1913; or Wanda, b. 1917. Both have used the TROXAL surname on the census form—NOT just the ancestry.com transcription.

Thirdly, two children seem to be listed for Leland TROXAL: Bill, age 13 and Barbara Ann, age 12. Both are too old to be children of either Farge or Wanda. AND neither is listed in the 1930 census. Help?

Leland Wilson Troxel is buried in Restland Cemetery, Baxter, Jasper Co., IA

Part of an effort to trace the descendants of Alexander NEGLEY of Pittsburgh. Leland Troxel is a 3 X great grandson of Alexander and my fourth cousin.

Willing to share information.

Bill Muller
muller1938@gmail.com

This is the first time I've ever checked the message board which is why this reply is 5 months after your question. My paternal great-grandparents were Martin and Mary Troxel of Grand River, Daviess, Missouri. Mary was born in 1862, I think; I've been trying to find her maiden name.

I haven't checked the message board for almost a year. I did find Mary Troxel's maiden name. It was Mary Hannah Stretch, and she was Martin's 2nd wife. His first wife, Lydia Brown, died while giving birth to twins, only one of whom, Johnny, survived. Only two other children were offspring of Lydia, Florence and my grandfather, William Daniel Troxel. They lived in the Daviess County, MO area. In 1900, my grandparents moved to Nebraska via covered wagon with four children and remained in Nebraska until retirement to California. I found a Trachsel in Lenk, Switzerland in 1367 but couldn't find other details. I assume he is a/the common ancestor?

My Troxel ancestors settled in Daviess County, north of Kansas City. They came there from DeWitt County, Illinois. As was a common custom back then family members moved in tandem with one another, in migration waves, if you please. They got to Illinois via Kentucky. My Troxel line extends back to Peter Troxel/Trachsel who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Switzerland in 1733. My Grandfather was born in Daviess Co., MO, and moved to Sayre, OK, with his wife whom he met in MO. His father - interestingly - followed his son to OK and settled in the town of Geary, OK, and was its mayor during World War I.

Trachsel / Troxell / Traxel / Tracewell Connection

My Tracewell line extends back to John Peter Troxel / Traxel / Trachsel, born in 1760 in Egypt, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, son of Johannes (Hans) Trachsel, born 3 April 1719 at Wolfersheim, Germany, who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany or Switzerland in 1737 on the ship Samuel. Only problem is I have yet to find any empirical evidence or facts that substantiate the connection or name change of Ederias Troxel, eldest son of Peter, who evidently changed his surname to Tracewell (along with a few other Troxels). From what I can establish, he then moved to Virginia where he again anglisized his 1st name from Ederias to Edward and 1st, married Charity Skinner in 1786, then married Dorcas Bonnifield in 1795 in MD. I'm looking for some sort of proof that can connect the name Tracewell to Troxel/Trachsel.

I'm looking for any info about Voyle Shirly Troxel. Here is all the info I have about him. He was born February 18, 1911. His parents were Evalena (Vermilyea) and John A. Troxel. His brothers were Orville Leon Troxel and Lyle Elton Troxel. I have one pic that shows Voyle's 4 daughters. Their names are Shirley Mae, Dolly Jo, Lena Kay and Gail Jean.

John A. Troxel
B. Feb. 14, 1869 Missouri
D. Mar. 29, 1938 Nebraska

The three brothers were all born in Nebraska. But I know the least about Voyle.

Orville Leon Troxel
B. May 10, 1900
D. 1953 Arizona

Lyle Elton Troxel
B. April 12, 1904
D. 1979 Arizona

You can see Voyle and the entire Troxel family by checking the profile pic of John A. Troxel in my family tree.
Orville Troxel was my grandfather on my mom's side. If anyone has any info on Voyle please let me know. Thank you.
