Hi there, I am not sure if surname Tr'nik comes from Trnka, but it was the most similar one I found. Tr'nik (long r) was the maiden name of my grandmother Maria. She still lives in Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) and I remember that in the past her brother - I think his name was Josef - was inspiration to an american poet who consequently had written a poem about him.
If you know about anyone called Tr'nik that might have anything to do with my family, please feel free to email me. Thank you.
Marcela

In Hungarian, the name became Trnik, then Trnyik, pronounced Trinyik (because Hungarian phonology can't handle syllabic consonants). There were and are quite a few of them in Szarvas (Békés county, southeastern Hungary); they were Slovak Lutheran settlers originally, but I haven't gotten that far back on my Trnyik great-grandmother's line.
