As a kid, I was brought up with the idea that Trelfa was a Cornish name. There is, however, no evidence for this other than the rhyme "By Tre, Pol and Pen, you shall know the Cornish men". More recently I have seen evidence to suggest that the name is a corruption of Threlfall - a Norman arostocratic family.

I can see it's 4 years since you posted your message so unsure if you still read these. Anyway... I've just started researching my family and I have a Richard Trelfa born c. 1791 in Middlewich area of Cheshire. I know he later had children including a son Samuel (obviously not yours but I wonder if this was a family name?). Have you traced any further over the last 4 years? If so would love to hear from you to see if we can tie in our trees.

My third great grandfather was Samuel TRELFA, born about 1791 and married Allice GILL. Their daughter, (my second ggrandmother) was Elizabeth, born about 1814. Any connection?
I have heard several theories of how the name "Trelfa" came about. One idea is that it is a corruption of the french for metal cutter. Another is that it orriginated from the "Threlfall" name (an aristocratic family in Lancastershire). The theory I grew up with (and my favourite despite the lack of proof) is that it is Cornish: the rhyme "by Tre, Pol and Pen, you shall know the Cornish men" is the only evidence.

I am researching the family name Trelfa,

My Grand mother was Sarah (Known as Sally) Trelfa. Born 1899/1900
The only Sarah Trelfa to fit in the 1901 Cences is Joseph and Edith Trelfa, 1 child. Sarah age 2 (Father Salt Boiler.)
This fits with 1881 Census Samuel and Ann Trelfa, 3 Children, Joseph, Nathaniel And another Sarah (Father Salt Boiler)
Also in the 1881 census ther is a Mary Trelfa (W), With son living at home Frederick Also Salt Worker (Could be Mother and Brother of Joseph?)
I am not putting this down as fact, but will confirm as I try to get both certs and the 1891 census plus other records.

As ther are only 13 Families in the 1901. Some are more than likley to be from the same family pre 1901. I was wondering if any of the names linked with any out there doing same?

I have sent for the Marrage Cert of my grandmother, as I want to doublecheck her Age before I send for the Birth. If they do, I don't mind sharing copies of what I get, or info that I get.

Thanks Ron
Perth, Western Australia
I was interested in your message about William Henry Heasom Trelfa. My grandfather was William Henry Heasom. I am not familiar with the Trelfa surname. But I thought the coincidence was remarkable. William Henry Heasom was born in 1871 in Brookville, IN. His parents came from Germany. I can't see any connection but the name similarity is striking, especially since Heasom is an uncommon name in the US Have you ever heard where the name came from in your family?

Dinah

My family is from the Derby area and probably connects with the Middlewich trelfas somewhere around the mid 1800s. Happy to chat if you want to send an email, or to hear from any other Trelfas.
Alright there Lesley....

Well, nice to finally hear from another trelfa. So far the only trelfa's I've heard of is myself, my dad and sister, a trelfa in America and yourself. On a quick BT search it claims there's supposed to be about 60 Trelfas in the UK alone????

So, quick history..... Basically I was born in north england (Crewe to be exact) and spent a bit of my childhood in cheshire. My mun and dad were also born cheshire way and according to my dad there is a wood in cheshire called Trelfa wood (such fame and glory). Since those dayz my family moved to the midlands where I grew up and now only my dad is still in the midlands, with my sister in wales and myself down in sunny old plymouth.

Sorry about that, bit of dull life history but there you go. So far only 23 years of it so can ramble on too much So, to what extent do you know of the Trelfa's effect on the world? Hopefully in a few years we'll of reached Oz (if I ever get there) but until then America is the best I can do. Where are you? Got a quick life summary?

Thanks for replying, it's nice to hear from new people, especially those who if you go back to the dawn of time you are hopefully linked with..........

I hope to hear from you again

Dave

Please email any Trelfa info. you have. I've only just started to put together the family tree and have recently become aware of the Canadian branch of the family. I live in Somerset, England, but my family has been in the Derby area for several generations and must be descended from the Trelfas who moved to the Stateses/Canada in the 1800s. I'll try and find the link with William Henry Heasom Trelfa from this end. Regards Steve
