Wife of William H Pope - Nancy Treadaway's Parents

For all my kin trying to find the parents of the Nancy Treadaway married to William H. Pope, as mentioned in "The Heritage of Marengo County, Alabama"...

First, I was skeptical about Nancy's last name being Treadaway for a long time because I couldn't find record of it, until recently. Her maiden surname appears in the Alabama Deaths and Burials Index for her son, Thomas Curby Pope (incorrectly spelled in the index as Thomas Cirb Pope).

Nancy's parents were Daniel Treadaway and Mahulda Johnson. My first clue was a court record that reads...

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Anson County - July Term 1851 - JOHN TYSON JR., Adm'r of RICHARD TREADAWAY VS. DANIEL TREADAWAY, RANDAL TREADAWAY, WILLIAM POPE and wife, NANCY - Petition for Sale of Land to Pay Debts - In this case, it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the defendants, DANIEL TREADWAY, RANDAL TREADAWAY, WILLIAM POPE, and wife, NANCY, reside beyond the limits of this State: It is therefore ordered by the Court that publication be made for six successive weeks in the North Carolina Argus notifying said defendants, non residents, to be and appear at the next Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions to be held for the County of Anson at the Court House in Wadesborough on the second Monday in October next. Then and there, to plead, answer or demur to this petition filed. Otherwide, judgment will be taken pro confesso and heard ex parte as to them. Witness NORFLEET D. BOGGAN, Clerk of the said Court at office, the second Monday in July A. D. 1851. N. D. BOGGAN, C.C.C. Additional Comments: DANIEL TREADWAY, RANDAL TREADAWAY, WILLIAM POPE, NANCY POPE, NORFLEET D. BOGGAN [Source: N. C. Argus - Sept. 13, 1851; Written: July 1851; Recorded: September 13, 1851]

You will find this online at http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/anson/court/tyson251wl.txt

It took me a while to piece it all together, then I found her listed as a family member in the fifth family listed on this page...

http://members.tripod.com/~Randy_T/RichTread3.html

In 1850, Daniel and Mahulda migrated from Anson, NC to Paulding, GA. That is why they were not present at the court procedings in 1851 (above). Mahulda migrated in 1860 from Paulding, NC to Walker, AL.

If the information in "The Heritage of Marengo County, Alabama" is correct then Nancy migrated to Russell, Alabama by 1855, which is where JOEL Francis Pope was supposedly born (according to the book). NOTE: His name was recorded as "JOEL" - not "James" - in records and documents for the 86 years of his life.

Anyhow, through AncestryDNA I have a DNA match with a 4th cousin where Daniel and Mahulda Treadaway are our common ancestors. As far as I can tell, this pretty much confirms my findings. I hope this helps others to move forward with their research into our past.

- Roy Pope Jr

Treadaway(1861-1887)was the father of my grandmother Emma Estelle treadaway-Deese. Her father died three months before she was born.
Any one know how Will Rogers Jr fits in. My grandmother always told me he were related. Jackson did marry Nancy Rogers. Is that the connection?

The only Treadaway's living in the Sand Mountain area in Dekalb Co, Al after the CW that I know of are James Monroe Treadaway and his mother Ary Treadaway and his descendants.
Sand Mountain covers a big area. Some towns are Geraldine, Fyffe, Rainsville, Sylvania, Ider, Albertville Henegar, Crossville, Dawson. He was born in Cherokee Co, GA in 1851 and Ary Treadaway born 1823 SC & moved to Dekalb Co Al, sometime after the birth of James Monroe from Cherokee Co, Ga where they lived the rest of their lives. His family does not know where or with whom Ary lived when she first came to Dekalb Co Al. Could there possibly be a connection to Moses Treadaway who lived in Sand Mountain, AL after the CW?

I am looking for any information regarding one of my ancestors, Nancy Treadaway Pope.

The 1860 census for Marengo Co. AL, shows Nancy as being 37 years old, (b. 1823), and having been born in NC. She was married to William Pope, also from NC. He was a veteran of the Civil War. In 1860, they had 4 children:
Emeline Pope b. 1845 NC
William A. Pope b. 1849 NC
Joel F. Pope b. 1855 AL
John E. Pope b. 1858 AL

Joel F. Pope later married my gg-grandmother Clara Ann Rebecca Pruitt.

I am specifically interested in the names of Nancy's parents. I have had trouble locating her or her family in any NC records.

Any information you could share or suggestions you may have to give would be sincerely appreciated. I have hit a wall trying to tie her back to NC.

Thanks,
Lauren Barchi
Hi, I know my Treadaway was Jerimiah Quicksell Treadaway bn ca 1777, and lived in New Jersey. He married Rebecca Lock of Phila.? and moved to Plaquemines Parish La. abt 1800. His parents were Henry Treadaway and Deborah Quicksell, married ca 1773 in St Michael Zion Church in Phila. Pa. I think Jerimiah's grandparents were Henry Treadaway and Ann Driver also Of New Jersey. My problem is making the connection from grandfather Henry to Nathaniel Treadaway of Massachusetts. I do not know if/how the N.C. Treadaway's connect to Nathaniel.
Sally

Treadaway family arrive Sydney 27 May 1855 on Constitution

Cornelius & Barbara Treadaway & their son William arrived in Sydney Australia on 27 May 1855. The ship Constitution was put in quarantine on arrival due to disease, there were many deaths on the voyage & in quarantine. Cornelius age 27 was a bricklayer born in Westminster, Barbara age 26 in Chelsea and William age 2 born in Pimlico. They apparently went to Melbourne after arrival because Barbara died at Port Melbourne in 1893. William married Annie Webb in 1873 & had at least 2 children Mary & Frederick. According to the ships passenger list Barbara had a brother George Chapman in Melbourne & Cornelius a sister Mary in Sydney.

A reunion of surviving Constitution passengers was held in 1905 at the North Head Quarantine Station at Manly & a monument was erected to honour those who died on the voyage, it survives today.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the ships arrival in Sydney a gathering of descendants of passengers is to be held on 17 July 2005 at the Quarantine Station in Manly NSW. Contact Rob Wills at rob.syd.wills@bigpond.com for info.

during much of my research on my GW Treadaway I kept coming across another GW who was older. On the 1870 census for Russell County there is a George Treadaway born in 1824 married to a Jane. No children are in this family. It states he was born in Ga but that could be a census error. Some other Treadaways from NC migrated to the area around this time. The older GW that I had come across also had fought in the Civil War. I found both in various Rosters that I had looked at. Sand Hill is in Genesee County and when I did a search on the census I came up with nothing. I will continue to look and next time in the Georgia Room I will jot down the information on the other GW because I bet this is the man you are looking for.

My Moses Treadaway was b. 1812, d. 1891, Swain Co. NC. He had brothers, Thomas, 1814, Daniel 111, 1818, George W. 1824, Jackson, 1832, Wade Hampton (Hamp), 1834, Martin V., 1836, and William B. who is very well documented.
Of these we know that Wade H., George, and Martin, went to AL.
Jackson was here in NC in 1860, but in 1870 his wife was here alone with their children, so he might have died in CW, or left them.
Moses also had 3 sons by his 1st wife who went to AL.They were Francis M., Henry, and Stephen.
I descend from his 2nd wife, Polly Stegall. (Moses md. his 1st cousin).
When I first started my research, I was told by the older Treadaways that Moses had lived in AL for a time after the CW, but came back to W NC to live in 1869. They named a place called Sand Mountain, AL.
Any help on these is greatly appreciated.
Lou Lunsford
Hi, my George Washington Treadaway was born in Russell County Alabama to Richard Treadaway and Susan Dunn Treadaway. I have done research on other Treadaway families so I will look and see what I have. My GW was born in the 1844. His father Richard (born in 1801) is the one that migrated to Alabama in the 1830s.I have the family that you are asking about in my records because the father Daniel and Elizabeth would be I think a great or great great Aunt and Uncle. I will email a file to you. If your Moses is from Coffee or Dale county he is descendant of GW's brother James Treadaway and they are from my Russell County line. They migrated from Russell to DAle. GW migrated after his first wife died and his daughters from the first marraige were grown.

Hi Jane,
My family did come over from England, but in the very late 1600s. I tried to look for Sear and found many by that name in the 1910 census. I did not see a Emma Sear and I didnt see a Sear born in England(here in America) during this time. The 1890 census is in fragments because of a fire that destroyed most of that census. Has anyone in your family ever stated that she went to America. Would she as a widow travel alone for a trip that life changing? Could family members of the Sears taken her in and buried her in their family cemetery in England? Does the church that she attended in England have records for her? If you knew the town that she settled in in America ,if she came over here, I might be able to search for her in the 1900 census. But I would need exact information because the search engine is not set up like the 1910. What year was she born. All this info could help tremendously in finding her.
From experience in searching on the census I have found that when the old folks were widowed they resided with their children either next to or in their household. Women did not usually leave their families during that time.
Thanks,
Suzanne Judd

I dont even have a death Date for GW....I have heard he died in 1914 not long after his son GW jr . GW jr was killed in accidental gunfire. If you have a documented death date for GW and know where he is buried I definately would like to have that info. Liddie was a daughter of GW Treadaway and my mother remembers her grandmother Annie mentioning her from time to time. Liddie was born in 1890 according to my records. I have a stack of Treadaway marraige certificates and unfortunately do not have hers. But, I have another relative that states in her information that Littie/Libby Treadaway married a J.J Lane on December 20,1913 in Covington County Alabama. Marraige Record notates that J.J Lane was 68 and Libby was 24. It was J.J's 3rd marraige so he probably had kids with previous marraiges. They resided in Lockhart Alabama.I would not doubt they moved to Florida because many in the Treadaway family did eventually go to Florida. Do you think you are from Libby's line or from a previous wife of J.J. Lane? Would you like me to send you to your personal email the Treadaway info that I have?

I'm getting a little confused on the G.W. Treadaways. I am looking for my ggrandfather's son, Daniel Lane, born 1916, 1917 or 1918 in Alabama. I have information on the Daniel Lane I am currently looking at that his father was a John Lane and mother Liddie Treadaway. My ggrandfather was John Lane out of Dale County, AL. I found that G. W. in Dale in 1900 had a daughter Liddie and then he shows up as George in Covington still with daughter Liddie in 1910. 1920 Holmes County, FL census has John Lane, Liddie and Daniel. Liddie is shown as age 31. I think she may be the daughter of G. (George) W. This is all I have and have just found some of it in the last few days. If this is my ggrandfather, he died in 1920. I cannot find Liddie and Daniel in 1930.

I am a descendant of GW Treadaway. I am the Great Grandaughter of his daughter Annie Treadaway of Society Hill Alabama. I do have information on his Russell/ Macon family and knowledge of his Dale County Alabama family. I am interested if you have additional information! I am willing to share with you what I have. Julia Treadaway married a Haywood and I have that line and Pink Treadaway too. John Treadaway listed as GWs son was really the son of his brother John that seems to have vanished. I need to get to the Montgomery Archives to see if GWs brother John died in the Civil War. I cant find him listed anywhere but alot of soldiers have cards at the archives and arent in a published roster. So to answer your question, yes, I am researching the line. Also, interested in the Justice family that married in to this family and the Evers family that lived next door. There is some kind of connection to the Evers family because in 1910 or 1900 (cant remember which census) Annie Treadaway Holt had a Benjamin Evers living in the house hold listed as a nephew. Also the Evers family took in another great grandmother Adeline Haywood. So they are connected somehow , just cant figure it out. Are you associated with the Russell branch or the Dale, Covington second family???
Thank you for responding
Suzanne Judd

Nina, I also descend from this family. I descend from Loyd B. Treadaway and his daughter, Georgia Ann. If you are still searching for info, I can give you some on my family if you need it.

Does anyone have Ophilia Treadaway in their family or know anything about her?? She had a daughter, Jackie N., who was born in 1895. She probably belongs in the family of Loyd B. Treadaway as possibly a granddaughter. I do know that Jackie was a cousin of my grandmother but do not know the parents, etc. of Ophilia. She was married to a Elbert Howard.
Any help greatly appreciated!!!
