Trabue/Tribue, Clay, Montgomery Families
My 3Grgrandmother was Martha Clay (d. 1835-1840 NC). Her parents were Edward Clay and Magdalene Trabue/Tribue. Ed Mag lived in NC bordering VA line in Orange Co.,(later Person Co.,) NC. Martha Clay m. John Montgomery in 1810 in NC. One of their children was Magdalene Tribue Montgomery. She m. her cousin George Connally Montgomery. Mag T. and George are my 2grgrandparents. I know nothing about my Trabue/Tribue ancestors except that they may have been French Huguenots. And they were possibly part of the Va settlement of Manakin. (A website on Manakin lists one Antoine Trabue as a settler there) Does anyone have any info to share on my line or the family's history in general? Thanks for your help.

David, Just saw your posting by sheer accident. There is a wealth of info about the Trabue family and many of us had a reunion just last weekend.
We are of Huguenot descent and our family was at Manakintown, VA. My branch of the family has been in Nashville since the early 1800s and came to this area from KY. There are many today still named Clay - there have been 7 Charles Clay Trabues.
My great uncle, Dr. Charles Trabue and my uncle, George O'Bryan Trabue have each written books about the family. Another cousin, Nelson Trabue, is in France now and doing some research at Montbalm (sp.). I have a copy of a family tree that dates back to the early 1700s.
I'm at work now and can't go into greater detail, but there are several family members who take their geneaology very seriously.
Send me your e-mail address and any specific questions and I'll see if I can find out some answers for you.
Are you anywhere near Nashville? The name is fairly prominent here. One ancestor was the mayor of Nashville in the 1820s. Others have been leaders in law, medicine and business.
Most of us are either Presbyterian or Episcopalian.
Your (very distant) cousin,
Cindy Thomsen

Hi Cindy, My Trabue Pedigree: Anthony Trabue m. Magdalene Verrueil John James Trabue m. Olympia Dupuy Magdalene Trabue m. Edward Clay Martha Clay m. John Montgomery Magdalene Trabue Montgomery m. George Connally Montgomery Edward Foard Montgomery m. Lilly Leonora Stevenson John Ralph Montgomery m. Mary Elizabeth Abernathy All names from Magdalene Trabue m. Edward Clay to John R. Montgomery m. Cindy, I wonder you have any information on a Clare Trabue, who married a James Bryant in the early 1700"s in Virginia. Their Daughter Marie/Mary born 1746 and married John Christian in Va.. This a new lead for me in my researching my Christian line.

Chris, I have a book that was published in 1983 by my great uncle, Dr. Charles Clay Trabue and his daughter, Julia. The following info should help you. I am typing straight from the book. I hope that "Clark" is who you're looking for.
Anthony Trabue, Jr. was born ca. 1708 in Henrico Co., VA and died 1743 in Goochland Co., VA. He married Clark _____, ca 1736. She was born ca 1718 and died after 1760
.
We do not know the last name of Clark. Some sources list her last name Vermiel, but she was probably confused with the wife of Antoine Trabue, Magdalene Verrueil. She was listed as Clere Trabue in early Virginia records.
After the death of Anthony Trabue, Jr., Clark Trabue married James Bryant, Sr., ca 1745. He came to Manakin Town, VA ca 1700 and married (1) Elizabeth LeFevre, daughter of Issac LeFevre, Huguenot founder of Manakin Town. James Bryant, Jr. a son of James and Elizabeth LeFevre Bryant married Jane Guerrant, daughter of Magdalene Trabue and Peter Guerrant.
Clark Trabue and James Bryant, Sr., had three children. (1) Marie Bryant, b. May 15, 1746, (2) Thomas Bryant, b. October 15, 1748; d. 1781 at the Battle of Guildford Courthouse and (3), Martha Bryant, b. Jan. 12, 1754.
I don't know if this is relevant or not, but Elizabeth Guerrant Miller had a son named John Guerrant Miller b. ca 1800 who married Jeanetta Christian, d. 1831. She was a sister of President Tyler's first wife, Letitia Christian.

Re: Trabue Family (includes: Dupuy, Clay, Montgomery)
Hello, I live a stones throw from the Trabue family homestead in Ruddles Mills, (Bourbon County), Kentucky. James Trabue, son of John James and Olympia DuPuy is one of my favorite historical charactors to research. Are you looking for specific information? Maybe we can swap stories.

Hello, Look in Chesterfield County Virginia. P.O Box 125 Chesterfield Virginia 23832-0125.... John James Trabue, has a will listed in that courthouse.
