Charles Toynbee & Elizabeth Snow

I've been researching our "toynbee" tree and have run into a stumbling block. I've taken the information from Jacky Clark and traced my family portion back to Charles and Elizabeth Snow. Are Charles' parents George and Sarah Starkey or George and Fances Burrell? My records show one thing and Jacky shows another. I'd love to know which direction to go. Can someone help me out? I'm from California with most of my Toynbee relatives coming from Pennsylvania. I think I may be a part of the missing 13 which may have been 13 of the 14 children of Charles and Elizabeth Snow. My brother, Robert Christopher Toynbee, was researching out tree in the late 1980's and I believe was in contact with a "Claire" but I'm not sure if it's the onle in Canada or New Zealand.

Sorry to say that Jacky Clarke is well meaning but not always correct.

I think I might be the Claire in question. As I remember, the California Toynbee family that I chatted with is from the same branch of our family tree as Polly Toynbee's.

Polly is descended from the George Toynbee who was born in Waddington in 1783, and farmed at Heckington. One of 11 children himself, this George was married twice (to Elizabeth Cullen, then Sarah Obbinson) and had 15 children.

The Charles Toynbee who married Elizabeth Snow was this George's younger brother, born in 1786. Their parents were the George Toynbee who was born in Waddington in 1749, and Sarah Starkey.

Are you sure of the connection to Frances Burrell? She doesn't seem to appear in Jacky Clark's Lincolnshire and Fenland Families tree -- was she perhaps a second wife?

Have you ever run into anybody named Taughenbaugh or Taughinbaugh? When I search at FamilySearch.org without exact spelling, it comes up with that surname in Pennsylvania.

I had to block this person from my e-mail because of her vitriolic comments.

Of course one makes mistakes from time to time - but people who don't make mistakes dont make anything/

Hi! You must be the person who contacted me quite recently, though not about the parents of CharlesToynbee and Elizabeth Snow. Robert Christopher was in contact with me way back in the 1980s as you say. I am the NZ Claire Toynbee.

Absolutely true! Family tree research is like a huge maze full of false trails and dead ends.

Of course we all do the best we can to sort out our family trees, and we have to document the false trails until we've proved them false. It's certainly helpful when people provide refuting information, but there's no need for anyone to be nasty. We all try to correct mistakes when we find them.

Sometimes it can be uncomfortable. While I was visiting the Family History Library in Salt Lake City a few years ago, I ran into another researcher who was very upset about something. I asked: thanks to her research that day, she had just "lost" her Mayflower ancestor.

My grandparents were all immigrants from the UK to Canada, and fortunately I have no alleged distinguished ancestry to prove or disprove. In fact, in case anyone reading this has a lead, I'm in need of documented parents for my great-great-great-grandfather William Toynbee (1798-1864), who was reportedly born in Kent but lived with his wife Sarah for many years at 8 Francis Street in Islington (now under Barnard Park), working as a tailor.

Hi Anne Marie --

I never saw Robert Christopher Toynbee's database, but I've recently found photocopies of a printout sent to our family in Vancouver Canada that has his name on it. It's a descendancy chart he prepared, dated 18 Feb 1989. I also have additions from Richard Mouat Toynbee of Ganges BC, showing where his family fit in there.

Robert listed your ancestor, the Charles Toynbee (1786-1830) who married Elizabeth Snow (1781-1863), as a son of George Toynbee (1749-1809) and Sarah Starkey (1754-1813), with Charles being a younger brother of Polly Toynbee's ancestor, the farmer George Toynbee of Heckington (1783-1865) who married, first, Elizabeth Cullen (1785-1820) and second, Sarah Obbinson (d1860). Polly Toynbee is a descendant of Elizabeth Cullen, and Richard Mouat Toynbee of Sarah Obbinson.

Robert listed 14 children of Charles Toynbee and Elizabeth Snow: Mary (b1813), Charles (1814-1835), Elizabeth (b1816), George (1817-1850) who married Mary Howell, Henry (1818-1828), Joseph (b1820), John (1821-1849), James (1822-1840), your gg-grandfather Edward (1824-1873) who married Caroline Sarah Cheeseman, Thomas (1825-1860), Sarah (b1826), Jane A. (b1838), Henry Snow (b1829) and Susan Ellen (b1830).

Robert showed your descendancy from Edward Toynbee and Caroline Sarah Cheeseman (1835-1916) through their 2nd son (4th child) Thomas Piercy Toynbee (1860-1932) who married Carrie Beisel (b1861), then Thomas and Carrie's 2nd son Robert Earl (b1920) who married Cecelia Marie Perisich (b1921).

All the best,
