Thirty years ago, inquiries to the historian Arnold Joseph Toynbee
from other Toynbees around the world were answered by his sister,
Margaret Toynbee. As she commented in a letter to me, "At one time
Lincolnshire was teeming with people of our name, many of whom seem
to have emigrated in the early nineteenth century to U.S.A., Canada,
South Africa. Now there are none left in Lincs."

Miss Toynbee also kindly provided a sketch family tree of
the Toynbees of Heckington, Lincs., descended from Toynbees
of Coleby Waddington, Lincs.:

George Toynbee (1783-1865), farmer of Heckington, Lincolnshire,
was married first to Elizabeth Cullen (1785-1829), they had
six sons and a daughter. Their third son Joseph Toynbee (1815-1855),
aural surgeon, was the grandfather of the historian Arnold (b1889)
and his sisters Jocelyn (b1897) and Margaret (b1900). Arnold, Jocelyn
and Margaret's father was Harry Valpy Toynbee (1861-1941), Joseph's
ninth child.

George's second wife was Sarah Obbinson, they had five sons and three
daughters. Their youngest son, Samuel, had a son Lionel (b.1858) for
whom Lionel Claude (b.1882) may have been named. One of the sons
was Thomas Toynbee (b.1822), who also married twice.

Thomas Toynbee's first wise was Anne Darley, they had Frank Darley
(b.1847) and Alfred (b.1849). His second wife was Polly Chapman,
she was the mother of Thomas Chapman (b.1851) and Charles (b.1855).

Thomas Chapman Toynbee married Kitty Sharpe and they had six sons,
two daughters. This is the other family that came to BC.

Hi Claire,
Do you have any record of Toynbees in the Donnington-on-Bain area of Lincolnshire? One of my gg-uncles (Levi LEWIS)married an Eliza Toynbee in June 1870. I have a list of their children but that's all. Thank you. Darci keithdarci@comcast.net

Sorry, I don't know about the Toynbees of Donnington-on-Bain ... at least, not yet. I guess there's a chance that the only Eliza Toynbee I know (born in Shoreditch a generation later, dau of Charlotte Archer and Thomas T) might've been named after your Eliza.

You might try Jackie.Clark@gwc.co.uk who's been piecing together the huge lincslinks family tree, "Lincolnshire and Fenland Families", that includes lots of Toynbees.

Myself, I'm thinking of taking the MyFamily.com class in tracing your English ancestry. I took the Scottish one with genealogist DavidWWebster and it was terrifically helpful plus a lot of fun.

Good luck with your search,
Claire

Eliza Toynbee b 1851/52 in Heighington Lincs per 1881 census

Hi Darci,

It's worth spending time doing searches at www.familysearch.com .

There's probably more available through LDS Family History Centres, but I did find Eliza and Levi's indexed 1881 census entry via the website. Eliza was reported to be age 29, born in Heighington - Levi was the one from Donnington - and from their children's birthplaces, it looks like the family moved around a lot:

Household:

Name - Relation - Marital Status - Gender - Age - Birthplace - Occupation
Levi LEWIS - Head - M - Male - 36 - Donnington, Lincoln, England - Labourer
Eliza LEWIS - Wife - M - Female - 29 - Heighington, Lincoln, England
Almira R. LEWIS - Daur - Female - 10 - Rutland, England - Scholar
Charles T. LEWIS - Son - Male - 7 - Swaby, Lincoln, England
Laura LEWIS - Daur - Female - 4 - Skellingthorpe, Lincoln, England

Many thanks Claire!! After more research, now I'm not sure if Eliza's maiden name was TOYNBEE or ALLEN. I need to verify that first. If I wrote for Levi & Eliza's marriage license, it should give her maiden name, correct? Best regards,
Darci

My great grandfather Philip Hammond born Heighington 1829 had a sister Elizabeth born about 1817. She married one Stephen Toynee son of Benjamin June 4 1840. Witnesses on the certificate include Sarah Allen & Joseph Toynbee. I would say they married at Heighington. A daughter Eliza appears to be born/bapt about June 1854. Does correspond with anything else you may have?.

Dear Lois,
Thank you for your response, but I'm sorry to report that I have very little information. I'm not even certain of the surname...it's either TOYNBEE or ALLEN. I'm researching the LEWIS surname & a Levi LEWIS and an Eliza TOYNBEE or ALLEN (born 1851 in Heighington, Lincs, England) married June 1870 in Heighington. Their 4 children were Almira Rosina, Charles Thomas, Laura & Leonard LEWIS. Thank you again, Darci

I have a contact at Heighington whose family has been associated with the area for over 200yrs. If anyone can get us answers for you she will. Unfortunately she doesn't have an e-mail address so I will have to write which possibly will take up to a month or so for a response. As soon as she gets back to me I'll let you know.
