Re: Eliza Toynbee b 1851/52 in Heighington Lincs per 1881 census
Dear Lois, I very much appreciate you writing to your contact in Heighington on my behalf. That is very sweet of you. The only other bit of information I have is that Levi & Eliza LEWIS' son Charles Thomas was born in Heighington in 1874. I am interested in finding Levi's death certificate so I can see if it recorded his mother's maiden name. Levi's parents were John & Elizabeth LEWIS both born in Donnington-on-Bain, Lincs., England. John & Elizabeth came to America in 1886, but Levi, Eliza & family stayed in England. Thank you so much for your gracious offer to write the letter for me. I'd be more than happy to re-imburse you for any expenses. Kind regards, Darci

My pleasure Darci. The lady in Heighington offers her services free of charge, is a historian & darling. She has sent me an interesting book on Heighington/Washingborough and in a phone conversation during the week offered to organise a map of Heighington as the village was about 1830. It makes it so more interesting I reckon when you live on the other side of the globe to get this sort of info. Take care & catch you soon.

Does anyone have ay info. re. Toynbees of Coleby? i.e. when they were actually living in Coleby. I have a descendant born Coleby 1653 Elizabeth Toynbee and am researching that part of the family.

Elizabeth Toynbee of Coleby born about 1650
When I visited the Lincolnshire Archives (near the public library in Lincoln) a couple of years ago, I had great fun looking through transcripts of the Coleby parish registers - some records go back to about 1600, and Toynbees were there. I was entertained by the variations in spelling. Hmm, I checked the IGI at familysearch.org: its only birth/christening records for an Elizabeth Toynbee of the period were submitted by church members who had no information about this Elizabeth's parents. In both, her surname is spelled Toynby; one of them (Film 456835) is linked to her marriage in Coleby on 30 Apr 1671 to William Procter of Scarle (the IGI has an extract from the Coleby Kesteven parish record with the same date) and the birth of their daughter Mary on 23 Feb 1679. The IGI also has an extract from the Coleby Kesteven parish register that lists the christening of "Mary Proctre" daughter of "William Proctre" on 23 Feb 1680. I'll take a look for my notes from those transcripts and see if I can add anything.

Went back and looked at my notes about the Coleby parish registers...
Unfortunately the oldest available register, which records infant baptisms, marriages and burials to about 1740, was severely damaged on older pages. One of the oldest legible segments, before 1561, read “Thomas Toynby, Amen”. Variants of the Toynbee surname I noticed in the transcript of this register: Toynby, Toynbie, Toynbee, Toinby, Toyneby, Toynbe, Tinby, Tineby (and possibly Tarby) - though the transcribers apparently didn’t recognize Tineby as a Toynbee variant, because it wasn't cross-referenced.
The oldest legible Toynbee record was in 1662: "Robert Toynbie & Katherine Handlay, single persons mar: 24 Aprill".
The next Toynbee marriage was in 1665: "Thomas Craven & Anne Toynbie, single persons, marr: 26 Nov:"
In 1671 there's an entry "Wm Procter of Scarle 7 Elizabeth Toynby/Toyneby single persons marr: 30 April"
Going by the christenings, there were two Toynbee men of about the right age to be Anne and Elizabeth's brothers: Robert (wife Katherine) and John (wife Elizabeth). Interesting marriage record in 1695: "Tho: Toynbee & Eliz: Toynbe, both single persons, marr: April 27". This Thomas may have been Robert & Katherine's son who was christened 20 Nov 1665. Seems he had a sister Elizabeth christened 09 Apr 1672, but John & Elizabeth also had a daughter Elizabeth christened 09 April 1676.
