I believe that your last name and mine could be the same. I would like to know more about your investigation of the toye surmane.

Hi I have been researching the Toye surname for 8 years now .I am stuck at 1742 I coul;d possibly fool myself and take it back to the 1500's I have not come across your spelling before .The name seems to have been interchangable with TOY and on the 1841 census it was spelt TYE the O being missed out .My ancestors lived in Staffordshire and Worcestershire.Nearly all the Toye's in the Birmingham area up until 1891 appear to be related .I now find a lot have Scottish ancestors. If you are interested in the TOYE's in that area I do have the 1851 and 1881 for those area's.I am living in Belfast although I originally came from Suffolk England. All The Best Malcolm

Hi there You may be interested to know, if you don't already, that Toy is a northern England dialect word for 'tight fitting cap'. I found that out in a British genealogy magazine recently. Our family has been in Canada (Toronto)for about 100 years. Before that, Farforshire Scotland. We've gone back another hundred years there, thanks to the LDS files. If you have any 'insider information' on Scotland Toyes or any others, I'd love to hear from you.

To Danny Toye Thank you for your reply concerning the TOYE surname .I had previously heard that definition for TOY.I was in Canada in 1994 stayed with my inlaws in Hamilton .it is a wonderful country,I see some Toyes lived in DUNDAS ,we certainly get about .My site is with the Family Tree Maker .I do note that alot of Toye's are also in Scotland I dont believe I have any connection .We also have 20 or so families in Northern Ireland .I married here and now have two married sons here so we are now adding to the Irish Toyes already here Let me know if you think I can help.? I am across the sea from Scotland and I also rely on the LDS records Have a nice Christmas All the best for 2000 Malcolm Toye

Hi Malcolm So nice to hear from you I'm beginning to hear of an Irish connection for our brood also. We're back to about 1790 in Farforshire, Scotland and a researcher friend says she expects the next line back will probably have emigrated from Ireland. Mum's side (Russell) is from County Donegal. I'll check out your page soon.
Happy Holidays Danny

Danny, I have secured information on my TOYE clan that has led me to James TOYE who married Eliza Ann THORNTON in 1845 in Eastern Ontario. They, at least, had 4 sons, all born in Matilda Twp., Dundas Co., Ontario. Through your research, I wonder if there may be some connections?

Toye from Eastern Ontario
Hi Doug. I know there are quite a few Toyes in the Peterborough area which is definately Eastern Ontario. My guys emigrated from Scotland, however, long after 1845 (probably closer to 1900-1910. Do you know if your line goes back to Scotland or Ireland?

Hello Danny,
James TOYE was born in Ireland but I haven't researched far enough to tell you where. That is my next goal. I have reason to believe James is closely related to some other TOYE,s found to be in Dundas County, Ontario at the time. Much of my research currently indicates there were two separate clans of TOYE's in Canada. Those in the Ontario area which were farmers, and those in the far eastern provinces which were mariners. I have some information claiming the TOYE ancestry originated in France and then emigrated to England and on to Scotland and Ireland. As you might be aware, there are many TOYE,s in England tracible to the 1500's. As I gather information, I will make a point to pass it on to you.
