George Toy, first Toy in Kentucky (for me, anyway)

Surnames: Toy, Newman, Bennett
I am hitting a wall with George Toy, born 1794 in New York, died 1860-70 in Kentucky. He had two wives, Mary ? and Nancy Malvina (Viney)Newman. His two oldest sons were born in Maryland, while the oldest daughter (and thirdborn) was born in Bath County KY in 1828. Thus, he moved from Maryland to Kentucky between 1823 and 1828. Census records confirm that he was born in New York, and while he is in the 1860 KY census, George is not mentioned in the 1870 KY census and Viney is shown as head of household. I have made the assumption that he passed away in that decade.

While other genealogies done in my family jump the rift and connect us to the Toys of New Sweden, I have yet to see the proof that verifies that George Toy's father John Toy was the child of Daniel Toy and Sarah Bennett and therefore descended from Elias Toy, first immigrant from Sweden.

Is there anyone out there with an answer, either positive or negative?

I am from the same lineagbe. I/we have a distant cousin from the second marriage of George and he has walked our path just ahead of us. and the research I have found was that Georges father was John Toy and eventually the trail stops at a George(Andrew) Toy or (Tay) and he was born somewhere in Sweden.

I was hoping that I would get a notice of the Toy family reunion in Central Kentucky this year but didn't get one. Do you have any contact with the person that put together that tree? It would be great if we could compare notes.

I went to Owingsville and went into their genealogy dept.
They have a file cabinet of all the popualtion of Owingsville. I found a folder that was strictly the Toy family. There is a booklet in he folder written by Charles Manley. This gentleman is from the second marriage of George. He has researched thru obits, and unfortunatley now deceased relatives. I was impressed with his findings. He had pictures, and there are some census documnets. His findings go back back to George Toy(Tay) from Sweden.

Thank you! I will have to get over to Owingsville and check that out. If I could find corroboration that George Toy is the son of the John Toy of Swedish descent, it would be fantastic.

I also got some info from The Maryland Historical Society along with an Article Titled The paternal Ancestry of Joesph Toy, Which is on the internet. Although Joseph isn't in the direct lineage it still follows the Family tree.

Mr. Manley and I hit a brickwall with finding Georges' first wife. I believe I found where she came from but I've hit a wall. Have not a clue as to why George went to Kentucky, nor his route nor what happened to Mary. She just vanished

It's sad...even with a digital footprint, how much of OUR lives will be searchable in a hundred years?

I work for a company whose home office is in Marlyland. I hope to take the time when I'm up there to do a little digging. Any idea of where in Maryland George married Mary? I've done newspaper searches and come up with nothing.

I think I have narrowed it down to Cecil County. as far as what town or community clueless. I have a friend who told me that during a certain span of years the records we seek my have been destroyed or no records were kept. We also discussed the fact that maybe Mary died along the way to Kentucky. If that is the case then there might not be a death certificate. But I would still like to see a marriage certificate.
