I'm a Tousley descendant too and have three questions, looking for any help

Who are the parents of Joseph Towsley b abt 1763 (m Rebecca Read) d Canada? I have seen two variations, either Gideon Towsley (m Lucy Olds) or his brother John Towsley (m Reliance Leavitt). Is there any clear evidence?

Did the John Towsley who married Reliance Leavitt also marry Sarah Benton? if not. who was he?

Who is the father of Alanson Towsley of Oxford County Ontario? possible candidates - Arial Towsley, Sikes Towsley
Adoption, Tousley/Towsley and DNA

Hi everyone,

My name is Danny Duchesneau, I’m born in 1977 in Quebec City. Sorry for my bad English as my primary language is french.

Sorry for the ugly URL in my post as we can't embed URL on the message board.

First, a little bit of history and adoption before the Tousley/Towsley part. ;)

About a year and half ago, I got interested in finding/knowing about my origins and started to do some genealogy work so I went on and asked my father Raymond Duchesneau questions about his father Georges Duchesneau who died in 1973. The only information that my father could give me was:

- Georges was adopted and Duchesneau was not his surname at birth.
- Georges spoke english (quite rare in the north of Quebec City in the 1950’s)
- Georges original surname as my father pronounced it (he didn’t had a clue at how to spell it though) sounded like “Tasselé” which is the Quebec City pronunciation of “tasse le” which means “move him” or “move it” so at that time I was like mmmm, I’m not so sure about that as it sounded more like a nickname than a surname.
- And 2 photos of him.

You understand that at this point I realized that I don’t have Duchesneau blood but some other. So I’ve been trying a lot of different things trying to find out who my paternal ancestors really are.

First of all, the main problem here is that we can’t find Georges’ birth act, certificate, nothing. I asked some of the best searchers/genealogist here in Quebec and we were not able to find any document with his original surname at birth.

This is were I started to do rigorous genealogy research myself on ancestry.ca as well as hundreds of other places and here are some of my findings (half of the documents are in french but I think you’ll get the idea anyway);

- My grandfather (Georges Duchesneau) was adopted just like my father told me, here’s the court judgement (http://goo.gl/yWtm1S). This 1939 document tells us that he was adopted by Emile Duchesneau and Marguerite Laderoute and that he was born January 31st 1913.
So this is where the “Duchesneau” surname comes from.

- The name of Georges’ parents on his marriage record (http://goo.gl/Y2fn67) in 1935 are Emile Duchesneau and Marguerite Laderoute.

Here comes the Tousley part;

- So I went further and found out Emile Duchesneau and Maggie (Marguerite) Laderoute marriage record in 1918 (http://goo.gl/OR6WJa). This is where it gets interesting… In this record, it is mentioned that Maggie Laderoute is widow of Archibald Loring Tousley. So I went like, wait a second the “Tasselé” surname my father told me about sounds EXACTLY like the Tousley surname of that Archibald..

At this point I started to think that Georges’ parents were actually Archibald Loring Tousley and Maggie Laderoute.

- Then, I found out Archibald Loring Tousley and Maggie Laderoute marriage record (front:http://goo.gl/nm8MoT), (back:http://goo.gl/UJGlNP) in 1906 in St-Louis-de-France-de-Montréal.

- So trying to find information on this couple brought me to get my hands on Archibald’s WW1 military records which I ordered at Library and Archives Canada to find out that he was killed in action on November 1916 Vimy, France. Here’s page 21 (http://goo.gl/y4JIlo) from the 37 pages military records I received from Library and Archives Canada.

If you put all these things together it actually make sense;

- Archibald Loring Tousley married Marguerite Laderoute in 1906, St-Louis-de-France-de-Montréal.
- They got a son named Georges in 1913.
- Archibald died in 1916.
- Maggie (Marguerite) Laderoute remarried with Emile Duchesneau in 1918, Cathédrale St-Jacques-le-Mineur-de-Montréal.
- Emile Duchesneau adopted Georges.
- They lived together in Montreal according to the 1921 Canadian census (http://goo.gl/kRfQYa).
- The family moved from Montreal to Quebec City in 1931 or 1932.
- Georges got married in 1935 in Quebec City, Paroisse St-Roch.

Here comes the DNA part;

I asked my father about doing the DNA test at 23andme.com (the one from Ancestry not being offered in Canada...) and the results do match one could have expected but still I don’t have any evidence that our family is of Tousley descent. So, I was wondering if it is possible to compare my father’s DNA with the DNA of a Tousley/Towsley descent? Would anybody could help me with that? I really would like to know about my origins.

If my family is really of Tousley descendants, I think we're the last Tousley alive that I know of from David Bryan Tousley's branch who emigrated in 1870 and the family keep going here in the province of Quebec (mostly Quebec City) but under the name Duchesneau.

Here is a link my paternal line (If I’m really of Tousley descent.). (http://goo.gl/ZcM2Xa)

I have quite interesting sources about them in my Ancestry tree so have a look! I do have much more to share on those people, documents that I haven't attached to the tree yet especially about the first 7 generations, things like the 148 pages Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files for William Tousley for example.

Cordialement,

Danny

I descend through Michael's son John (there followed five or
6 John Tousleys in a row. Your Gideon was a cousin, of course.
We share the Towsley family tree from Thomas Sr. -- Thomas---Micheal---John--Gideon, then my line goes on to Amos. And your line goes with Nathaniel That is assuming Gideon and Nathaniel were brothers. I don't know if you'd be interested in our line, It daughters-out after my generation 1950..

A lot has changed and developed since this old post was written. My direct paternal ancestor Thomas R. Towsley came to MA from England and sired Michael Towsley in 1653. The line goes down to John Towsley --> Gideon Towsley --> Nathaniel Towsley (of Rupert, VT by 1787) --> Elihu Towsley --> Daniel C. Towsley (of VT in 1833, then WI, & NY) --> Edgar Allen Towsley (of Waukesha, WI and then Fort Wayne, IN by 1920s). Alternate spellings in our tree are Tousley, Towsley, and rarely Townsley. Other variants or misspellings are found. There were no "two brothers coming together on a ship originally" as formerly thought. Thanks for your patience.

Searching for my birthmom

Dear Marilyn,
I want you to know I think about you everyday and love you dearly. I understand your decision you made at 17 and it really was for the best interest of your baby. My adoptive parents could not have been better, they took very good care of me and raised me well. We both can't change the past, but we can surely do something about the future. I'm not searching for you to upset you or your family. I want this to be a positive experience for both of us and our families. I really do want to know about my real family history, medical and genetic information. It's important to me and I feel a piece of me is missing without it. I want us to develope a relationship over time and I know this won't happen overnight. I know you have this within your heart and may God bless you and give you the strength and courage you need to find me. I hope you are as proud of me as I am with you.
Your loving son,
Ed

Adoption search/birthdate 3-17-60/Update

I was born 3-17-60 to a Marilyn Towsley (Summit,NJ) at St Francis Hospital in Trenton,NJ. Patrick Towsley was my birth name and I was adopted 4-26-60 through Catholic Charities and that was finalized 8-3-61 and I became Edward J. McQuarrie. My birthmom was only 17 and put me up for adoption because she was looking out for the best interest for her baby. Her decision was very difficult and it turned out to be very good for both her and her baby Patrick. Her parents were Leroy and Muriel. She had an older brother Leroy and younger sister Carolyn.Marilyn went on to become a nurse. My birthdad known as Roger, had a mom named Catherine, a younger brother and his parents were divorced. Roger was 5'11'', medium build, red hair, brown eyes, was a h.s. grad. His mom was Irish and was a beautician. No info on Roger's dad.
I am searching until I am reunited with my birthmom and possibly my birthdad. I want to know more about my medical and genetic history and maybe more info about my paternal side. I want to thank Marilyn for making that very diffiult decision at 17. I want to develope a relationship with her when she's ready. I am not doing this to disturb her family or make any waves. I have a very loving adoptive family and my own family. This is not an easy decision for me either. I have a lot to lose with my adoptive family, but I think the positive far out weighs the negative in this reunion. I can't change the past, but I sure can work on the future and make this a very positive experience for all sides. Life is too short to pass this opportunity by. Please e-mail any info to me, THANK YOU!

I need to correct my post of 1/31/2000. The paragraph of my information should read as follows:

Apparently as many as three (3) Towsley brothers in my lineage came over on a ship from France. An ancestor of mine, Nathaniel Towsley, died from drinking from a poisoned stream during the War of 1812. He was also living during the French & Indian War. My ancestor Daniel Towsley was in the Vermont state militia in 1837 - ?, and honorably discharged per documentation in my possession.

I should also mention that I have the original document proving my ancestor Daniel Towsley's service in the Vermont state militia circa 1837, and of his honorable discharge from same. The spelling of the Towsley name is the same as today on that 1837 Vermont document.

Rex,
Hi, my name is Anita and I am looking for info on the family of Henry Stroud who married into the Towslee family, first marrying a Towslee in 1861 and then marrying his wife's sister, Mary in 1867. Henry Stroud's first wife was Catherine ? and he married her about 1854 in Clayton County, Iowa. They had a daughter born May of 1855 named Virginia Stroud. Apparently Henry abandoned his wife and daughter telling people that his wife died in child birth and his daughter was "with relatives". Actually Catherine died a about a year after the child was born. But she had found a family to adopt the baby. Virginia Stroud was adopted May 1856 by a family named Hagensick in Clayton County, Iowa. She lived with them apparently only a few years. I have found a reference in church records that she might have been with a family named Brandt in Clayton County, Iowa. Then a document surfaced that tells of a "releasing" the Hagensicks from the adoption and that a Dietrich Schroeder is Virginia's guardian. Virginia is in the census records with the Dietrich Schroeder family, she is using the name Jennie Stroud. Virginia married a Dixie Hanna about 1877 and had at least one child, name Alma who was born about 1878. That is about the last I have seen of Virginia Stroud Hanna. Can't find anything on the daughter, Alma, either. Does any of this sound familiar? Would appreciate anything you might have come across in regards to this.

Anita
Email: auntnital@yahoo.com

Gertrude Towsley, b.Sep 1896, dau of George/May, of Grundy Co., IL & a nurse later in Detroit

I have an original studio photograph of “Gertrude Towsley, Battle Creek Class of 1922”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in Battle Creek (Calhoun Co.) MI, and shows Gertrude in her Nurse’s cap. This photo came with a group of about ten photos, all of graduates of nurse’s training at the “Sanitarium” of Battle Creek. Gertrude looks to be about age 25-26 years old.

I found Gertrude in the SSDI, showing she was born 11 Sep 1896, and died Oct 1986 with her last SS check going to Morris (Grundy Co.) IL. From there, I found Gertrude in the 1900 census for Nettle Creek (Grundy Co.), age 3, daughter of George E. and May Towsley. In 1920 census, she was in the Battle Creek, MI census, age 22. By 1930, she was still single and worked as a nurse for the Detroit Health Dept.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to the family of Gertrude Towsley.

I am also a member of this family, one correction. Imogene was a daughter of Henry Oscar Tucker--not wife. Imogene married Thomas Pashby, then Joseph Bisbey. I am granddaughter to Imogene's brother L. D. Tucker. He was born in Kalamazoo, Mich July 16 1866, he died in Cottage Grove, Oregon Nov. 16 1943. I have a lot of info on Tuckers, Towsleys, Hulburts, Logans, Parsons etc etc, Will Share.
Norma Tucker Benedict. My E-mail address is norma_Benedict@juno.com.

I am extremely interested in the Michigan Towsleys...I'm currently undertaking a historical survery of a property in Locke Twp, Ingham County, MI where Matthew P. Towsley lived between the 1850s and 1880s. Matthew was son of John Towlsey (Steuben County, NY) and grandson of Amos Towsley. The survey is being performed for the current homeowners...a portion of Matthew's house (basement, foundation, etc.) is still part of the dwelling.

Please contact me at frequentflier66@yahoo.com if you'd be willing to share some photos of the Michigan Towsleys for my research. (I'm using a friend's ancestry.com account to contact you) I'd be willing to share Towsley gravesite photos from the nearby Rowley Cemetery in Ingham County, MI.

Jeff Westover
Clarklake, MI
