I am posting this as a possible help to all those Towes out there who thought they were German, or English, or whatever. It appears we hailed from Scotland, in the county of Towie. I am open to receiving any information on the Towe history, and submit the following for your perusal:

From Steve Towe: e-mail: stevetowe@mindspring.com

I am interested in contacting anyone who knows the Towe history, specifically what country we are from, where we settled in America, etc. I will be happy to share my family history as far as I know it:

My name is Stephen Alexander Towe, age 49, of Buncombe County N.C. My
grandfather, Charles Towe, was born around 1890, in Leicester N.C., on
Sluder Branch Road. He had three brothers, named Kyle J. Towe, Neil Towe,
and Denver Towe, and one sister named Alma Towe. Charlie married Eva
Birmingham, and had 9 children here in Buncombe County. There were three
boys, John, Alexander, and Franklin Macadoo. (Franklin was my great great
grandfathers name as well.) There were 6 sisters, Mildred, Margaret, Coot,
Barbara, Peggy, Aileen, and Maxine. My grandfather died 46 ago of prostrate
cancer.

From Dale Johnson: (in Fairplay, Missouri)
E-mail: dejn@ipa.net

My 3rd great grandfather Reuben Tow along with his father Christopher Tow, Jr., and his brothers Ezekiel, James and William had migrated to Buncombe County by 1810 and appear to have moved on, in the 1820's as they are in Indiana in the 1830's, and on to Missouri by 1842. Missouri was not their last stop. We have found they continued their migration to Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas plus on west.

I have seen documentation on this Elizabeth Towe in Maryland also a Robert Towe, but have no connection to them as far as I know.

The story goes and keeps cropping up from different sources, that three brothers and a sister migrated to the U.S. from vicinity of Towie, Scotland in the early 1700's. They ship wrecked off the North Carolina coast and only one brother survived. My earliest Tow documentation is Christopher Tow, Sr., who married Deborah Mullen in 1763 in Perquimans County North Carolina, marriage bond was issued July 22, 1763, but other relatives have been found in Onslow County North Carolina that I tend to believe are his brothers, as they seem to congregate at about the same time in Buncombe County. Christopher Tow, Sr. was a Revolutionary Soldier and died April 11, 1878, which we strongly believe was at Valley Forge, Pa.

Hi, I have found a reference that Christopher Tow was listed in Tithables 1748 Hyde Co., NC, which seems to me to change a little the way most people have viewed the "first" Christopher. This would seem to indicate an earlier TOW. It would seem that this earlier Christopher would have been the father of Christopher (d. Rev. War), and a brother Ezekial who witnessed a deed for his brother in 1768.
I think that Ezekial is the ancestor of many of the TOW family that were some of the first in the Buncombe Co. area. Have you noticed the Toe River? Named for some of the first settlers in the area (change pronunciation).

sorry - don't know if Asheville is in Buncombe county but, I my maternal grandmother's mother and aunts were Towes from Asheville. Sisters names were Elma, Edna and Mary. Somehow Mary married James
Kirby in Columbia SC. Where she lived until
her death in the 60's.

Elma and Edna never married and lived in Asheville all their lives. Elma worked for the southern Baptist convention and died in the 70's and Edna worked for Wachovia bank and died in the 80's.

Any records of them?

Yes, Asheville is the county seat for Buncombe County. I did not know of your relatives, Elma, Edna etc. My grandfather, Charlie Towe, married Eva Birmingham. I would imagine that your relatives were descendants of my great-grandfather, Franklin Towe of Leicester. What do you know about their father?

Just found their fathers name

I'm also searching for Pinkney Towe from Yancy County (Joins Buncombe County)He had a son Clausel that married Rachel Arrowood. He died before our great grandfather (Dr. William C. Towe)was born.I have a record of every Towe in Yancy County except Pinkney.
Have nothing since '92. You could try for a Geneology groupe in Burnsville,NC the county seat. Dr. Towe was raised by his mother Rachel her 2nd husband David B. Banks in Burnsville.

I recently got a copy of my Aunt Edna's social security application and Pinkney's
first name was William. He was married to
Elizabeth Eliza Harper and Edna's birthplace
is listed as Fairview, NC.

William Pinkney and Elizabeth had 4 children:
Edna Ludith, Carrie Elma, Mary Ruth (my great
grandmother) and Claude/Clausel. I spent alot of time with Edna and Elma growing up as they were very close to my grandmother -
their niece - my great grandmother passed away long before I was born, I had never even heard of the brother until I started researching the family a few months ago.

Would love to know what info. you might have
