Elizabeth Smith & husband, Mr. Toward, New Cumncok, Ayrshire, Scotland

Classification: Query
Surnames: Toward, Smith, Glendinning

Looking for more info on Elizabeth Smith, who married a Toward in New Cumnock Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. Although they moved for a time, I believe they returned to New Cumnock and a lot of their children were born there.

Her mother, Catherine Glendinning married John Smith, in Closeburn parish, Dumfriesshire, Scoltand. I don't have much information about Catherine except a rough guesss of when she was born, (1782)but I know from my gr gr grandfather's death certificate that she married John Smith(a grain miller) and had a large family. Catherine's husband John can be found in New Cumnock parish, Ayrshire on the 1841 census but Catherine may have died because she never shows up on any census records with him. The family must have moved to New Cumnock between 1826-1841.

Their children born or baptised in Closeburn parish, Dumfriesshire:
John 1805 (married and had a large family, lived in New Cumnock but died in Penpont parish, Dumfriesshire)
Margaret 1807
Mary 1809
Janet 1811
Elizabeth 1814
Catherine 1816
William 1822, (married Margaret McNaught(McKnight) of Sorn & had a large family: Margaret, Catherine Glendinning, Mary, Janet, Marion, Agnes, Elizabeth, James, John & William Smith).
Elizabeth 1826 (married Mr. Toward, had a large family, lived in New Cumnock)

Want info on Elizabeth's family, parents, siblings, husband, and children.

1861 and 1871 census shows an 83 and 93 year old Robert Smith. . . . Living with the Toward family - are you sure that her father is John and not Robert?

Immigration records show that Wm, John S. and Ralph immigrated to New York in 1880 and Naturalization records show that John S. Toward was naturalized about 1886 (don't have them with me and don't exactly remember the date.

John S. Toward is the great grandfather of my friend, Charles Toward, who lives in WV, but who's family is from McDonald, Allegheny Co PA

Am trying to locate some of the same information for his family.

Thank you for responding to my posting about Elizabeth Smith and her husband (Mr. Toward)and their family. Elizabeth Smith was the daughter of John Smith & his wife, Catherine Glendinning. I have the baptismal records from Closeburn Parish, where the family originated, and have her baptismal record. I have looked at microfilms of Closeburn Parish church records and microfilms of New Cumnock census records. Elizabeth is on the 1841 census in New Cumnock with her father, John Smith. New Cumnock did not record marriages until Civil Registration so there is no marriage record for Elizabeth to Mr. Toward. On either the 1851 or 1861 census for New Cumnock John Smith was living with his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Mr. Toward. Around 1871 or 1881 census Elizabeth & husband and most of their children had disappeared from New Cumnock. I have the death registration for John Smith. You may be making a mistake. Have you looked at microfilmed census records for New Cumnock? There were other Toward families but I can't remember if any of them were also in New Cumnock. I can't locate my census record notebooks right now. please e-mail me directly at jifjc@primus.ca as it is very inconvenient for me to answer message board postings from home. I believe William was in New Cumnock on the 1871 census with his sister Ann/Anne who married an Irving. I am willing to share documents but expect that others will share their documents with me. Hope to hear from you soon. Isobelle Finney, descendant of Elizabeth Smith Toward's brother William Smith.
