I was wanting know if anyone in the Tow family (or others for that matter) had any experience with DNA Testing and if som what service did they use?

I have run into a roadblock with Tow research and thought this may give further information.

Thanks,

Gavin Tow

Hi Gavin,

I have the same question. I am a descendant of Wilson Tow, who arrived in Texas from Missouri about 1850. No one has been able to prove who his parents are or to connect him definatively to the Tow families in North Carolina, although it seem most likely that he did come there. One of my brothers would be willing to participate in a DNA test if we could find a male who can prove descendant from Christopher Tow of North Carolina to participate as well.

If anyone is interested, I would be willing to set up a DNA group through Ancestry so we could share our results and let other Tow's participate in the fun.

Gavin, I am descended from William Tow & first wife, Rebecca Lance Tow out of Buncombe County, NC who settled in Union County, GA. Along with several other Tow/Towe researchers, we have been working on tracking lines for awhile and even had a meeting of the minds in Asheville, NC last June. We are still trying to figure out my William Tow's parentage (believe it highly likely to be Jesse Tow & Nancy Haws Tow). I have been looking at www.familytreedna.com as the place to use for our family tree dna testing. Hoping to get this done within the next week and order a kit for one of our direct male descendants.

Hi Susan or Gavin,

I have a Tow relative that contacted me and she is interested in the DNA project, here is her email address.
Her name is Betty Tow
fbtow@att.net

Also my distant cousin Carl Martin gave me this information posted below. Hope this is helpful. :)

Hi Cheyrl;
Finding the Tow males would be a tough job. William Tow had 4 sons and two of those (Monroe and James) had no children......that leaves William Riley who had several sons....but I have no addresses and John Calvin who had five sons of which one died infancy and Uncle Marion had no children. Uncle Johnie Tow had one son who died infancy and one daughter. So from John Calvin that leaves two sons who had sons......Uncle Henry had a bunch of sons and their families are scattered all over from Indiana to California. Uncle Wade had only one son who also only had one son who lived in Memphis....but I don't have names or addresses and I think that line ended up all girls in Memphis.
You would probably know more about Wilson Tows male descendants and I know they are scattered all over too. I think it would be quite a task to try and find all of these people. I know nothing about a DNA project on the Tow family.

This is great! I think I've communicated with Betty before and if I remember correctly she connects to a known North Carolina branch.

My line is from Wilson Tow. We know William and Wilson are brothers for sure, so that just leaves finding a connection with another branch of the family.

I would love it if a descendant of Reuben Tow from Perry Co, Illinois would participate. I believe he is the son of Lucretia Tow, wife of James Tow. He was born in Kentucky about 1819 and was still living in Allen Co along with Lucretia in 1830 before heading to Illinois. If we could establish that they are related to the Georgia and Texas branches, that would lend weight to the story that William and Wilson's father was James Riley Tow.

I'll get in touch with my brothers this week and we'll see what we can do for the Wilson Tow branch.

Since 2009 we have made some headway via the DNA research.

While the majority of Tow/Towe men who participated have matching or very closely matching DNA, a small group (those along my line) match one another or closely match one another. One participant is a known descendant of a brother to Mary Polly Tow who had children by a William Wood. We were looking at Jesse Tow (who married Nancy Haws/Hawes) as being the father of my William Tow who married Rebecca Lance (daughter of Martin B. Lance & Jerusha Fletcher Lance) in Buncombe County, NC / Henderson County, NC. Jesse Tow was the only Tow living near Martin B. Lance & Jerusha Fletcher Lance in the 1850 census. William & Rebecca married some time around mid 1840s and had the first 2-3 kids in Buncombe County, but by 1850 they were living in Union County, GA where the remainder of their kids were born. Descendants of three sons....James Washington Tow & Samuel Lafayette Tow and William Jasper Tow...participated in the Tow/Towe DNA Study. They matched one another and the known descendant of another son of Mary Polly Tow & William Wood. Jesse Tow was cited as a son of Mary Polly Tow in a Bastardy Bond in the 1790s. The three descendants of William Tow & Rebecca Lance Tow and the one descendant of the other son were matching men with the last name of Wood/Woods.

Between the DNA results and naming pattern of the kids, we believe this shows that our William Tow (husband of Rebecca Lance Tow the first wife and Perniece/Pernecy Elizabeth Seabolt Tow the second wife) was the son of Jesse & Nancy Hawes Tow and Jesse, in turn, was the son of Mary Polly Tow and William Wood. We have yet to determine the parentage of Mary Polly Tow.
