Tobery of Frederick County
I have found the births of some of the children of Joshua and Ann Tober(r)y in Frederick. They were in a transcript of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Surprisingly they were transcribed as Dovery, Dowery, Dowera, Dovera & Dovrie. This church is comprised of both Germans and others. The minister was usually German and D's and T's sound remarkably alike in German. Luckily more than one child was included in the transcription, so I could determine that it was the right family. There are two children of Thomas given: 1. Thomas Dovery and wife Darkey (possibly Dorcas)son Robert was born 2 May 1786 and baptized 8 Sept 1786. The sponor was Josia Witnell. 2. Thomas Dovrie & wife Darke, daughter Mary b. 6 Jan 1784 and baptized 16 Oct 1784, sponsors were parents.
There were three children for Joshua and Ann 1. Joshua Dowery & Nancy - daughter Ann b. Sept 28, 1777, baptized 29 November, sponsors were parents. 2. Joshua & Ann Dovera - son Joshua b. 6 Oct. 1783 and baptized 25 Oct, sponsors were Mary Morris and parents. 3. Joshua Dovera & Ann - son William b. 29 May 1792 and baptized 16 Oct, sponsors were parents. Another daughter was: Elizabeth Born to a Joseph (should be Joshua) & Ann Tovery - p. 56 b. 30 Apr 1786 bap. Nov 13 1786 sponsors were Conrad & Christina Becker Records of the Evangelica Reformed Church in Frederick, Maryland, 1746-1800 Translations by William J. Hinke and E.W. Reinecke Family Line Publications, Silver Spring, MD, 1986, p.l 56 Another son was Thomas, mentioned in the will of Joshua in 1807. Joshua also mentions in his will a son John as being his natural son.
This has to be either a transcription error or the problem between German and English.
Any thoughts on this? Joan Peake

Re: Tobery of Frederick County
Joan,
Yesss! Boy do I love you!
Thank you for the information! I have been researching the surnames of Tippery and Tobery/Toberry for several years now and had a suspicion that our “old” Thomas Toberry/Tobery was related to the ones in Frederick Co., MD.
The Thomas you listed definitely sounds like “old” Thomas Toberry of Anderson County, TN, however “old” Thomas (his identifier is old as apposed to Thomas b 1790) was more age appropriate to be a sibling of Joshua rather than a son. Old Thomas Toberry/Tovery born about 1750 and who fought in the Rev War was listed as being a soldier in the "Flying Camps" for both Bedford Co., PA and Frederick Co., MD. He was also listed on the 1788 tax lists for Huntingdon County, PA where Jacob Tippery (who immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine and was probable brother to Joshua Tobery) was residing.
After the war “old” Thomas Toberry (date of birth in the mid 1750’s) and wife Dorcus and family moved to Anderson Co., TN where he passed away in June 1807. Know children in TN were: Jane, John, Robert. There were other children that had close ties to Anderson Co., TN and until now were assumed to be the children of Thomas and Dorcus, but it is possible they were nieces and nephews of “old” Thomas and were actually children of Joshua and Ann. Those children were: Nancy, Elizabeth and Thomas (mine b about 1790 in either PA or TN). (The most common male given names in my line are Thomas, William and Joshua, and my own line of also has as a family tradition that connects them with MD).
The transcription that you cited does appear to be in error or the original record was possibly reconstructed after the fact like many others. If Thomas and Darkies had a son named Robert born 1786, then Thomas would have to have been at least 12 years of when Robert was born therefore making him born before 1774. AND if this is the same Thomas as ours who fought in the Rev War, his date of birth would be closer to 1750-1760.
It is my belief that the Thomas mentioned in the records that you cited was a sibling to Joshua, and is most probably the same person as our “old” Thomas! The children of Thomas and Darkies Tobery match those of our Thomas and Dorcus Toberry. So, to quote Phyllis a member of our list: “just how many Thomas Toberry’s can there be?” I think not many and I believe they are one in the same! Now just to prove it! Anyone live close to Frederick County, Maryland?

Re: Tobery of Frederick County
I am currently in Salt Lake City. I have looked at every record available here for Frederick County. I have always known about Joshua and his family. I have his will, the births of some children and his deeds. I now have the following information about Thomas, who I also thought was the Thomas of Tennessee. Here's what I have so far: 1779 Hopewell Twp., Bedford County (parent to Huntingdon) taxrolls Tho's Toverey, farmer 2 horses, 1 cattle, value 4 pounds, 10 pence; 60 acres by Impt 1781 Tho's. Tovery, 60 acres, Impt., no livestock 1782 Thomas Tovery, 60 acres, Impmt., no livestock Not found in 1783, 84, 85, 86, 87 (leads credence to being in Frederick County at this time) Huntingdon County formed in 1787 1788 Hopewell Twp., Huntingdon Co. Thomas Tovery 300 acres, 1 horse, 1 cattle = 5 shillings, 8 pence 1789 Hopewell Twp., Huntingdon Co. Thomas Toberry 300 acres, 2 horses, 1 cattle, value = 69, tax = 7 shillings, 9 pence Note: Hopewell Twp. is now Penn Twp. As you can see he has not moved. I have looked at deeds but there is no Thomas Tob..., Top..., Tov..., Dov..., Dob... in Huntingdon County. They do not seem to list people as inmates if they do not own the land they are on. Only Joshua has deeds in Frederick County. Joan Peake

Re: Tobery of Frederick County
Glady One thing to remember - in German a D and a T sound the same. For example the name Diefenbaugh & Tiefenbaugh are the same name. It just depends on who was recording it. Since the minister was German, he just wrote what he thought it was.
Now for the remainder of the information I have found. I'm at a standstill until I think of something else.
