I am researching the Tovey family tree. James Tovey came to the Lanark County area around 1830. He was a Catholic from Co. Kilkenny,Ireland. He married Mary Hogan in 1838. They had 7 children.
Mary's parents were Patrick Hogan and Margaret Tovey.
James had several cousins who went to Illinois, Pennsylvannia, and Missouri around 1850. Their parents were John and Margaret Tovey.
Both John Tovey and Patrick Hogan arrived in the Perth/Lanark area about 1825.
I would like to hear from descendants of any of the above.

I do not have any information from 1850 on, so I can't tie them in.
Do you know who your great grandparents were or where they came from? It is possible that they were related to my wife's ancestors, but I would need some names from the years between 1850 and 1900 to establish if there is a connection.

My wife & I would love to go. Are you expecting many people? I don't know how many people you have invited. If you don't have any concerns about the number of people, my wife's twin brother and 2 sisters and their spouses may be interested in coming.
Please send me an e-mail at Tomlins1@Netcom.ca and we can discuss the arrangements (refreshments, food, directions, etc.)

Dear Donald, If my research is correct I am distantly related to your wife. James Tovey is the son of a second James Tovey who married Catherine Finnelly. One Tree World has a posting with many enrties, you should goto that site if you have not alredy visted it. James the father comes to Canada with his family James,Richard,Thomas,Micheal. His brother John born 1771 Kilkenny Ireland also comes with his family of which I am decendant from. John m. Margaret(no last name know) b. She marries Walter Powell and has my father Gerald Powell who marries Moya Leary and has me Shawn Thomas Powell. A Powell family reunion is held every summer in Mo Vally IA. Many who attend are decenant from My Grandmother Francis Tovey. As well as a 2nd group of cousins , my grandmothers sister Aileen Tovey also married a Powell. In other words 2 Powell brothers married 2 Tovey sisters. The first couple had 5 childern, the 2nd had but 1. But betwen the 6 cousins many grandchildrern have been born.

Hi Shawn
Thanks for replying to my post. You are correct when you say that you are related to my late wife's family.

I try to update my Tovey information as often as possible. Within the last year I have found another Tovey that went to the Lanark County area and lived to be 108 years old.

Here is a list of the Toveys that I know of that moved to Lanark County and settled in the vicinity of Perth:
1) Ann Tovey and her husband, James Deacon arrived in Canada in 1816.
2) Margaret Tovey and her husband, Richard Hogan arrived in 1826.
3) John Tovey and his wife Margaret Tovey, arrived in 1827.
4) James Tovey came to Canada in 1832. (This is my late wife's great grandfather.) He married Mary Hogan, daughter of Richard Hogan and Margaret Tovey by special dispensation in 1838.
5) The widow of Thomas Tovey, arrived in the 1860's.

I have further details on all of the families listed above. Can you please let me know if you would like to exchange GEDCOM files?

Regards,
Don Tomlinson

Not sure how that works. I have done some work starting to put a family history in ancestry. Is this what you trade or do I have to post on one tree world.

Hi Shawn,
You can post your family tree on Ancestry.com so that people can look at it. (However, usually information on the living is not posted to prevent identity theft.)

I use PAF software. It can produce an export file (GEDCOM) that I can send. However, I would need to know what type of family tree software you are using because the file can be exported to be read by different programs. I would also need your e-mail address so that I can send it to you.

There is some Tovey family tree information that I posted on this site a few years ago. Since then, I've gathered more information, but haven't updated it to the site.

If you would like any information, please feel free to contact me at donald.tomlinson042@sympatico.ca.

Surnames: James Tovey
Hello - I am looking for information on a James Tovey. He was a young man in the early thirties (say 18 to 30 years old) and we understand that he came from Toronto and may have traveled in Southern Ontario, etc selling paint.

Information would be greatly appreciated.

thank you.
