Re: James Tovey - Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada
I know this is an older post but I just came upon it. I am researching the Tuffy family of Clonmel, Tipp. Patrick Tuffy arrived in St. Louis MO sometime around 1850. (Patrick is my 2x great grandfater.) He stayed with Michael Tovey who was probably a cousin. Michael's marriage record lists Catherine Fennelly and James Tovey as parents. He was married in the old French cathedral in STL. I can't remember all details but I will look them up. Michael died at a very young age. One challenge in research is that the Tuffy/Tovey names seemed to be used interchangeably. I went to Ireland this summer and met a Tuffy cousin in Kilkenny. We visited graveyards of Tuffys and Toveys in Kilkenny and Tipp. If you can clear up this surname mystery or if you want more info on Michael Tovey, please let me know. My address is: cbolesta730@yahoo.com. Chris Bolesta

You helped me with the marriage of Margaret Tovey and Bernard (Barney) McDevitt in 1856. Do you have any further information on Barney? Who were his parents and where did they come from? Thanks ~ Bob

Sorry, I don't have any further information on Bernard other than he was born in New York. It didn't specify whether it was New York City or simply New York state. No parents were listed for him. Don

Re: James Tovey - Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada
hello,
I am descended from John and Margaret Tovey, who came to Lanark, Ontario in the early 1800s. Their son, Michael Tovey, married Katherine Tierney (also from County Kilkenney) and they had several children, including a set of twins, Michael and Peter, who were born February 4, 1842 in Lanark. That family migrated to the states, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska (Washington County by 1860). In 1861, Peter joined the Iowa volunteers as part of the Union Army during the Civil War. Family lore contends that his twin brother, Michael, also joined. There are records that show Peter's participation, but the only Michael I can find joined the war in Illinois and mustered out at a different time and place than Peter. Peter mustered out in Memphis, Tn. and ended up in what was then Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He married two Cherokee girls, Susan Martin, who died not long after the marriage, and then Anna Mariah Leach, with whom he, had several children, one of whom was Frank Leo Tovey. Family lore contends that Michael was with his brother when he came to Indian Territory, but no records. A Michael Tovey whose birthdate was Feb. 1842 was a Wells Fargo stage guard and was killed on duty in Amador County, California in the 1890s but we have been unsuccessful in finding solid proof that he is the same Michael Tovey. Frank Leo Tovey, Peter's son, married Pearl Acridge and had seven children, one of whom was Pete Henry Tovey, who was my father. We were raised in Kansas and Oklahoma and never knew our Tovey relatives in Nebraska and Iowa and Illinois. I married a man from Niagara Falls, NY and have lived here for 45 years. When I learned about the Tovey beginnings in Perth, I was very excited. I often look across Lake Ontario and wonder about the early Toveys who lived there.

Re: James Tovey - Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada
Margaret Tovey was one of the daughters and is my gr grandmother. She married Bernard James McDevitt and settled in Belvidere IL. I have reconstructed the family but am unable to find any lineage previous to the above.

Re: James Tovey - Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada
Totally new to this - and this post is 4 years old - but in researching my James Tovey, Stephen's Point, WI, originally from Milltown, Co. Kilkenny, I came across in military records a Michael Tovey from Milltown, Co. Kilkenny, who enlisted in the Union Army at Ogdensburg, NY, May 1862 and deserted in Sept 1862 - in Virginia, Occupation listed as shoemaker. I think. It seems that there were at least two Tovey families in Milltown at that time.
