Hello - My grandmother's name was Alice Tovey Brogan. She was born April 12, 1877. Her father was Thomas Tovey and her mother was Bridget Duggan Tovey. She was born in Piltown in county Kilkenny in Ireland. She came to New York and met her husband, my grandfather, Michael Brogan. She visited her family in Ireland and left Michael Brogan my uncle (Mick) there to visit with her brothers and sisters. World War I broke out and she didn't return for a long time. Mick Brogan never returned to the US. He lived at the Tovey family farm. I think he died about 10 year ago. My grandmother had a sister Catherine (Kate Tovey Miller) who also came to New York and married someone named Miller. She and her husband died fairly young and my mother's cousin, Jimmy lived with my mother (also Catherine, but "Kit") and the Brogans as a teenager.
So, I'm pretty sure that you have Kate and Alice (sisters) mixed up but it is Alice Tovey Brogan whose child was Michael (Mick) that you were writing about as she did leave him in Ireland while visiting. It is a very interesting story. My mother only met her brother once when he came to the US to visit. My aunt (another Alice) had an act of congress passed to allow him to visit. That was in the 1950's. A truly interesting story why that was necessary.

Hi, are you able to help with information on the 1880 marriage between Henry Tovey and Ellen Sinnott at Mullingar? I would love to know the names of their respective fathers, and any occupations mentioned. Thanks.

Hello,

My Great Great Grandmother was Mary TOVEY. She was a sister of Thomas TOVEY who married Bridget DUGGAN so we are distant cousins. Mary married James RAFTIS (also spelt RAFTICE) at Templeorum in 1858 and they had a family of five children. The RAFTIS family lived at Powerswood near Thomastown.

My Great Grandmother Mary RAFTIS emigrated to New Zealand in 1879. Mary was nominated for free passage by the husband of Margaret Mary O'BRIEN nee TOVEY and I am keen to find out where she fits in. Her parents were Michael TOVEY and Margaret POWER. Is Michael another brother of Thomas or perhaps he is the son of James TOVEY and Catherine FENNELLY. Margaret may have had a brother John born about 1844 who accompanied her to New Zealand in 1876.

As well as Thomas and Mary, there were also brothers Richard who emigrated to Australia and James who went to the US and lived in Wisconsin.
