Adoption, Tousley/Towsley and DNA

Hi everyone,

My name is Danny Duchesneau, I’m born in 1977 in Quebec City. Sorry for my bad English as my primary language is french.

Sorry for the ugly URL in my post as we can't embed URL on the message board.

First, a little bit of history and adoption before the Tousley/Towsley part. ;)

About a year and half ago, I got interested in finding/knowing about my origins and started to do some genealogy work so I went on and asked my father Raymond Duchesneau questions about his father Georges Duchesneau who died in 1973. The only information that my father could give me was:

- Georges was adopted and Duchesneau was not his surname at birth.
- Georges spoke english (quite rare in the north of Quebec City in the 1950’s)
- Georges original surname as my father pronounced it (he didn’t had a clue at how to spell it though) sounded like “Tasselé” which is the Quebec City pronunciation of “tasse le” which means “move him” or “move it” so at that time I was like mmmm, I’m not so sure about that as it sounded more like a nickname than a surname.
- And 2 photos of him.

You understand that at this point I realized that I don’t have Duchesneau blood but some other. So I’ve been trying a lot of different things trying to find out who my paternal ancestors really are.

First of all, the main problem here is that we can’t find Georges’ birth act, certificate, nothing. I asked some of the best searchers/genealogist here in Quebec and we were not able to find any document with his original surname at birth.

This is were I started to do rigorous genealogy research myself on ancestry.ca as well as hundreds of other places and here are some of my findings (half of the documents are in french but I think you’ll get the idea anyway);

- My grandfather (Georges Duchesneau) was adopted just like my father told me, here’s the court judgement (http://goo.gl/yWtm1S). This 1939 document tells us that he was adopted by Emile Duchesneau and Marguerite Laderoute and that he was born January 31st 1913.
So this is where the “Duchesneau” surname comes from.

- The name of Georges’ parents on his marriage record (http://goo.gl/Y2fn67) in 1935 are Emile Duchesneau and Marguerite Laderoute.

Here comes the Tousley part;

- So I went further and found out Emile Duchesneau and Maggie (Marguerite) Laderoute marriage record in 1918 (http://goo.gl/OR6WJa). This is where it gets interesting… In this record, it is mentioned that Maggie Laderoute is widow of Archibald Loring Tousley. So I went like, wait a second the “Tasselé” surname my father told me about sounds EXACTLY like the Tousley surname of that Archibald..

At this point I started to think that Georges’ parents were actually Archibald Loring Tousley and Maggie Laderoute.

- Then, I found out Archibald Loring Tousley and Maggie Laderoute marriage record (front:http://goo.gl/nm8MoT), (back:http://goo.gl/UJGlNP) in 1906 in St-Louis-de-France-de-Montréal.

- So trying to find information on this couple brought me to get my hands on Archibald’s WW1 military records which I ordered at Library and Archives Canada to find out that he was killed in action on November 1916 Vimy, France. Here’s page 21 (http://goo.gl/y4JIlo) from the 37 pages military records I received from Library and Archives Canada.

If you put all these things together it actually make sense;

- Archibald Loring Tousley married Marguerite Laderoute in 1906, St-Louis-de-France-de-Montréal.
- They got a son named Georges in 1913.
- Archibald died in 1916.
- Maggie (Marguerite) Laderoute remarried with Emile Duchesneau in 1918, Cathédrale St-Jacques-le-Mineur-de-Montréal.
- Emile Duchesneau adopted Georges.
- They lived together in Montreal according to the 1921 Canadian census (http://goo.gl/kRfQYa).
- The family moved from Montreal to Quebec City in 1931 or 1932.
- Georges got married in 1935 in Quebec City, Paroisse St-Roch.

Here comes the DNA part;

I asked my father about doing the DNA test at 23andme.com (the one from Ancestry not being offered in Canada...) and the results do match one could have expected but still I don’t have any evidence that our family is of Tousley descent. So, I was wondering if it is possible to compare my father’s DNA with the DNA of a Tousley/Towsley descent? Would anybody could help me with that? I really would like to know about my origins.

If my family is really of Tousley descendants, I think we're the last Tousley alive that I know of from David Bryan Tousley's branch who emigrated in 1870 and the family keep going here in the province of Quebec (mostly Quebec City) but under the name Duchesneau.

Here is a link my paternal line (If I’m really of Tousley descent.). (http://goo.gl/ZcM2Xa)

I have quite interesting sources about them in my Ancestry tree so have a look! I do have much more to share on those people, documents that I haven't attached to the tree yet especially about the first 7 generations, things like the 148 pages Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files for William Tousley for example.

Cordialement,

Danny

Looking for any info on a Nellie (Hanson) Tousley. She is listed in her brother's obit as Mrs. Nellie Tousley N. Y. This obit is dated 1961 for her brother Albert Hanson.

Nellie was born to Christian Marius Hanson and Empte Marie Lockert Nelson. She was born Nely Alvilde Hanson on 20 Mar 1892 in Minnesota or Wisconsin. I have her name and DOB from a bible entry.

I believe she married a much older gentleman by the name of Charles Tousley and lived in Duluth in the 1930 census then lived in Adams, Jefferson County, NY in the 1940 census.

She was the mother of Charles Tousley born in about 1927 and Suzanne Tousley born in about 1929. These children are found on the 1930 census and they lived in Duluth, Minnesota, at that time.

Nellie is listed as "Nell" on the 1940 census as living in New York.

I did find an SSDI for Nellie Tousley; she died Mar 1980.

Update: She is mentioned in another obit as living in Sackets Harbor, N. Y. This obit was dated 1952.

Tousley (Towsley)

Trying to indentify the William Tousley family. William was born on Mar 12, 1779 in Salisbury, CT. Married Charlotte Houghton, born 1786, died Oct 1863. Charlotte was from Hudson, NY. Reference records from Morrisville Rural Cemetery, Madison County, NY.
Review of CT records at New England Ancestors did not reveal a William born in Salisbury during that year.
Youngest of six children was John H.Tousley, 1827-1905. According to a history of Chautauqua County, NY his father, William, was of New England stock, was born in CT and moved to NY in early manhood. William’s spouse was Charlotte Houghton, daughter of John Houghton. John Houghton was born in England and came to this county before the Revolution. He was impressed into General Burgoyne’s Army, escaped and joined the Colonial Troops (found no other record). John H (1827-1905) was born in Morrisville, NY moved at a young age to Rushford, NY. Married Mary Elizabeth Parker, then moved to Jamestown, NY.
Some additional research, show other children of William and Charlotte (need additional verification) as:
Sarah M Tousley, 1813-1902. Married Orvillers Coman.

Hiram Tousley, 1816-. Married Harriet

Edward D. Tousley, 1820-1894. Married Harriet

Deborah Jane Tousley, 1822-. Married Leonard Leland, 1820.

??? Tousley.

Any help with verification or addition to the above information would be appreciated.
I am a Newbie to this geneology business, so you will have to bear with me.
I may have overstated the "excellent" photo description, as it is a 4" x 6" actual portrait photo from Barron Photography in Port Huron, Mich taken sometime around 1880, I would guess. It's faded, of course, so it probably won't scan very well, but I'll give it a try. The inscription on the back simply says "Felix Tousley, father of Edwin Tousley" written by by grandmother (Edwin Tousley's daughter).
Your notes from Gertrude Jessup seem to jive as my gr grandfather, Edwin Rutven Tousley was born Jan 31st, 1850 in Wolf Island, Canada
I have no information on Felix Tousley's parentage.
I am attempting to attach a .jpg picture file for you.
Let me know if you received it or not.
My direct email is Bruce Brown wranglerwellsite@telus.net
Hello,
I would love to see the picture you have of Felix. Do you have it posted somewhere? He is my 3rd great grandfather on my mother's side as well. My grandmother was a Tousley and Felix was her great grandfather. He died before she was born.
I don't have any new information on him but am still looking.
A family member gave the following information to me. I don't have the documentation except for the censuses and his civil war record.

"Some notes on Felix Tousley and his wife Abigail Hyde
These notes came from Gertrude Jessup-
Felix engaged inthe lumber business and possessed 2 small ships plying between Kingston Harbor, NY and Wolf Island, St Lawrence River, Canada. Winters were spent on island felling trees, sawing lumber and bringing it by boat to Kingston during summer months. Some unsatisfactory business caused Felix to change occupation. He moved to Mich. squatting onland along shore of Lake Huron, at Ft. Gratoit. He took up agriculture. Final move was made to ? (could not make it out) a zone of Port Huron City about 2 miles out. Built a house, had a small dairy and delivered milk to city.
Felix was of Scottish ancestry. Don't know whether the Scotch was on father's side or mother's . His mother's maiden name was Ward.
He died in Pt Huron, Mich. and both he and Abigail are believed to be buried at the Lakeside Cemetery, Pt. Huron.
The censuses of both 1860 and 1880 state that Abigail was born in Canada, but her death certificate states New York.
NOTE: Pt Huron used t o be called Ft Gratoit. Most of their children were born there."

I look forward to hearing from you.

I suspect that our Towslee families are connected. Especially since your middle name is Merritt. My great grandfather, Edward Perry Towslee homesteaded SW of Colby, Thomas County, KS in 1886. This is about 50 miles west of Hays. Are some of your ancestors buried in the Norcatur Cemetery, Norton, KS ?? I think Edward's uncle, Merritt, is buried there along with other Towslees.

Contact me directly since I do not check this board too often.

Rex Touslee
rmtous@msn.com

Am very interested in your Theron Holley, Sr, b 1809 and probably from Vermont. Who are his ancestors?
My elusive ancestor is Joseph Holley b abt 1755, Rev. War Pensioner. Enlisted in Connecticut Line in Canaan, Litchfield, CT. Discharged Mt. Independence, VT. No more details or location known for years. Had son Stephen Holley b abt 1784 and son Isaac Holley, b 1797 in unknown place in VT. Joseph Holley is from Cincinnatus, Cortland, NY when he buys land in Freetown, Cortland, NY in 1815. Joseph and sons Stephen and Isaac in Freetown, Cortland Co., NY 1820, and 1830. Stephen and wife Polly have disappeared before 1840 census. Isaac (who m Rosanna Tinker, dau of John Tinker and Thene Beebe) is in Freetown 840, in Onondaga Co., NY 1850 and then in Ingham Co., MI. Searching for ancestors and relatives of Joseph Holley, b 1755. Rev. War pensioner Stephen would make a great brother for Joseph, but I couldn't make a connection, although both used each other and Jesse Bishop as witnesses for Rev. War service. Both Vermont and Ellisburg have appeared in my Holley research. Happy hunting. I certainly hope we can connect up. I'm Holley-hungry for help! Our line pronounces name Hawley, not like Christmas holly. Pat

RE: Michael and/or Michah Tousley/ Towsley of Conn. Revolutionary war era. I was browsing a website that is dedicated to military men and women, their geneologies and their war records. I came across the two names mentioned above, and printed out some of the records of their pay, what military group they were part of, etc. Don't know more than that.
My grandfather (Nelson Tousley VanBuskirk) was the son of Harriet Tousley. He was born in Ohio in 1884. She told family members the Tousleys were of Welsh descent, and also that her immediate famiy had come across from Canada when she was a small child. Other information I've seen says they were of Scots descent...so I don't know if she was misinformed or ???? Scots/ Welsh may seem a lot alike to some people, both being Celtic groups, but as for the rest of the discrepancies, I don't know. Any ideas?

I'm looking for information specifically on Albert R. Tousley. He married a Jane M(?) Fetterly, not sure of the year. He was born Abt March 1854 in New York. Any information on anyone in this line, as he is my great great great grandfather would be appreciated!

Members of this family did end up in Vermont after leaving Suffield. Some of those families might have gone on to Canada and then returned to the US. Other families that I have followed took that route including the Austin & Sikes families.

Art Sikes

ArtSikes@aol.com
