I am looking for information about the Toscano family that settled in Syracuse NY back in the late 1800. My Grandmother's first name was Assunta and my Grandfather's name was Joseph. My mother Carmela Rita Toscano was born August 6, 1913. She married my father Anthony Joseph Valentine in 1938. I would like to find relatives out there that may be on line.

Dear Mary,Hello, My maiden name is Tuscan. I found your message on the Toscano Surname message board of the Family Tree. I live in Solon, Maine and am trying to find information on my ancestor John A. Tuscan b. 1787, married Nancy Merrow in 1810 , in Athens Maine, and lived in Bingham , Maine in 1812. They had six children: Calvin-1812, Luther-1815, Fidella-1817,Lucinda-1819, John-1823, Francais(called Frank)- 1826. WE know little of where they come from , but assume that they came from Tuscany , Italy. And info that I have gotten from those I've e mailed at businesses over there in Italy, they confirm, my suspisions. They say that the name Tuscan is the English version of the name Toscano, which is extremely common in Italy, like Smith here in the U.S.. I feel that my ancestor may have had the name Toscano, and just changed it to Tuscan, because they tell me they both mean , the man from Tuscany. I am also interested in any information I can get about our religious background and if we could poss. be of Jewish heritage. I am wonderiing this because of web sites I've found that state that there was a very high concentration of Jews there prior to them being made to leave. Anything you could give me, I'd appreciate it. Respectfully, POTENTIALLY YOUR RELATIVE, who knows! Sally Foster
