Hi Robin,

You posted looking for Herbert Torrey family in Nebraska. My dad was Lewis Torrey, and his dad was Bert Torrey, and Bert's dad was Herbert Torrey who was married to Jane Haskill. As far as I know, Herbert was not a Mormon.

I don't know what LDS might have meant. In stories passed down, we heard that Timothy Haskill was a wife-beater, and Jane ran away from him to Nebraska, where she met and married Herbert. Jane was said to have the most amazing eyes -- I think they were frosty green like my sister's.

Barbara Torrey Clegg
Lincoln, NE

I found out that Sybil Haskill (Aunt to Earl Haskill - his father's sister) was an early member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am not certain if anyone else was a member or not or if she followed Joseph Smith Jr. and was part of the split when Brigham Young took over or joined the RLSD Church after Joseph Smith's murder. But she is listed as an early member with her fourth husband Ancil Freel.

Re: RE: Vermont Torreys

The Vermont Torrey’s are a part of my Brooks ancestry. Charity Torrey is my third great grandmother. Her son Martin Samuel Brooks married Lucy Caroline Harvey my second great grandmother, daughter of Arethusa Harriet Torrey who is also a third great grandmother.
We have done extensive research and with Hosea and Charity we are trying to locate day/date married. Charity shows up in Hadley NY married to Hosea in the 1930 Census. At that time they had 2 children with Martin Samuel the oldest born in 1826.We have nothing on their exact days of death but Hosea does not show up after 1850 census. Charity may of moved in with a Joseph Torrey after this. If nothing else I would just like to make contact with another Torrey researcher of today but would appreciate any info you might have on Charity Torrey daughter of Samuel Torrey. She would have been around 14 when Samuel was born. I have done the full DNA testing and we are an unique branch of the brooks family’s of New England. Q1A3A L804 L53 small area of this around Saratoga NY as well as Tenn and NW Norway and Eastern Sweden have this. Very small amounts elsewhere in the world. We have three DNA matches, mine to Hosea and two to Benjamin Brooks Otsego. Family researches have been trying to find the parents of Hosea and Benjamin and have not made that link yet. My mothers family was from Essex County NY and have ancestral links to Vermont via that line, Adeline Ober for one.
Torrey, Helen M. (dau. of Joseph G. and Nancy (Caryl) Torrey, Rockland, Maine (1886)

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Jan. 5, 1886 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in the Men and Women column:

“Intelligence of the death of Helen M. Torrey will be received with much surprise by her many acquaintances. Three months ago she went to Lowell for treatment, and on Thursday underwent with heroic fortitude a severe surgical operation, which the hope of cure demanded. From the effect of this she did not rally, dying on Sunday. Deceased was a lady of great beauty of character, of cultured musical tastes, and who though an invalid for nearly all her life, has borne her sufferings, which as times were very great, with quiet Christian courage and utterly without complaint. Deacon and Mrs. Torrey had started yesterday for Lowell, but were intercepted at Bath by news of the death. The remains will be brought home and the funeral take place Thursday at 1:30 p.m.”

Re: New to Torrey research -- Torreys in MA

Hi Deb: I volunteer at the Rockland, Maine Historical Society and recently came across this obituary. Hope it might be helpful:

From the March 6, 1894 Courier-Gazette (Rockland, Maine)

Joseph G. Torrey, who recently sustained the surgical amputation of an arm and was thought to be slowly recovering, died at 8:30 o’clock Wednesday evening at the family residence on Summer street. The operation took place three weeks ago, a bone cancer rendering it a necessity. Owing to Mr. Torrey’s advanced age and failing health the amputation was beset with additional difficulties, and though himself fearful of the results, Mr. Torrey bore the operation with great fortitude, manifesting the while a Christian cheerfulness. The operation resulted favorably beyond the expectations of everybody and though retaining nourishment only with the greatest difficulty, he was apparently regaining his health. Up to within a few hours of his death his condition had not noticeably altered, when suddenly alarming symptoms were developed and the friends and relatives who gathered at the bedside knew that the end was near. It came and the peaceful expression upon the dying man’s countenance belied the presence of pain. Heart failure the doctors pronounced the cause.

Mr. Torrey was born in Hanson, Mass., nearly 74 years ago, son of Rev. Joseph Torrey of that town and Almira Little of Marshfield, Mass. Jan 12, 1843, he married Nancy Caryl of North Chelmsford, Mass., and a year ago they celebrated their golden wedding. They lived in Biddeford for awhile, where Mr. Torrey served as a journeyman founder, and in 1853 they removed to this place, ever since their home, except for a short time when they abode in Bath. Mr. Torrey set up a brass founder near the spot now occupied by the North-end iron foundry, the firm continuing for a short time as Torrey & Holmes. Afterwards the shop was removed to its present position, opposite the First Baptist Church, where the firm of J.G. Torrey & Son has won itself a wide reputation, its goods holding front rank in all the eastern markets. Mr. Torrey manifested a deep interest in everything he undertook and up to within a few months ago was exercising the most careful supervision daily over the business. In his death our city not only loses one of the most prominent business men but is called upon to mourn the death of a valued citizen and a Christian. Mr. Torrey was a very prominent worker in the Congregational Church and was for many years a deacon there. He was genial and generous to a fault and it is little wonder that he was held in the highest esteem. Mr. Torrey is survived by a widow and three sons, George E. Torrey, a member of the firm, Willard C. and Arthur L. who are located at Elgin, Ill. In addition two brothers, Geo. L. Torrey of Kennebunkport and Hon. Frank B. Torrey of Bath, and a sister, Mrs. Almira Sturtevant of Lowell, survive. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. R.W. Jenkyn officiating. There was a very large attendance, the board of managers of the Young Men’s Christian Association of which deceased was a member, being present in a body. The floral offerings were beautiful.
I have no connection to either of these families but found this in connection with other research. It is from the March 3, 1885 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the "Men and Women" column:

"Thursday noon George R. Lancaster and Mrs. Lucy T. Torrey were wedded at the residence of Dr. Benj. Williams, Elm street, in the presence of a very few of the relatives of the contracting parties, Rev. Mr. Kimmel of the Church of Immanuel officiating. After the ceremony the wedding party took the train enroute for the south for a six weeks' tour, during which Florida and New Orleans will be visited. Mrs. Torrey was formerly Lucy T. Dean of South Thomaston, a sister of Mrs. Williams, and the widow of Wm. L. Torrey of San Francisco, formerly of this city. The groom is a retired business man of Bangor."

Torreys in NYC and Brooklyn

I have all the Torreys in my family from "The Torrey Families in America" and I am Familiar with the Torrey website. I am looking for anything on Louisa Slender Frost, wife of James Dawson Torrey 1221316. A search of Brooklyn Eagle turned up a couple of references to him, but nothing useful on his wife. I did find a marraige record for them on LDS microfilm: 19 Oct 1842 in NYC. I would also like to connect to any Bevans cousins who are also descended from this couple and other Bevans cousins descended from the siblings of Tom and Homer Bevans of Chicago and NYC. These brothers are the sons of Homer Bevans and Jane Arundel Murray of Chicago.

Bruce Torrey Bevans 1221316AA11

Herbert Torrey - Nebraska

My great grandfather's mother married a Herbert Torrey and they settled in NE. We have some notes my great aunt wrote down about the family and next to Herbert Torrey's name she wrote "LDS." Does anyone have information on the Herbert Torrey family in Nebraska? He married Jane (Godfrey) Haskill who had been married to Timothy Haskill in Tama County, IA. My great grandfather was Earl Haskill of Overton, NE. I have the Haskill line going back to England, but I am curious about Herbert Torrey and the Torrey family. My aunt also had noted that he had been in Missouri so I am wondering if he was there with Joseph Smith and if Herbert Torrey really was a Mormon... My great grandfather wasn't... but I would like to know if the Torrey's were.

Re: Herbert Torrey - Nebraska

I am a great great grand-daughter of Herbert and Jane Torrey. My notes also say that when Herbert married Jane, she had 2 kids (Della and Earl Haskill) from a previous marriage. After that, they had 6 more children. One of them was named Bert, (fathers namesake, I guess) and that is my grandmothers father. I am pretty new to all of this but I have never heard that anyone in my heritage was Mormon so I would be surprised if that were true. Have you found out anything more on that? An article my grandmother wrote (in the 1980's) has a lot of fun info on the Torrey family. Here it is:

HERBERT TORREY
By Dorothy Abels

The ancestors of the Torrey family have been traced back to 1613 when James Torrey was born in England and arrived in Massachusetts in 1657.
Herbert Torrey, father of Bert, was a wagonmaster when he met and married Jane (Godfrey). Jane had two children, Della and Earl Haskill from a previous marriage. Earl resided in the Overton area with his wife Stella (Becker) and family until his death in 1980, at age 93.
Herbert and Jane lived their early years in Minden, Ne. Six children were born to this union namely Herbert (Bert), Frank, Bertha, George, Alvin (Bud) and Ray. The family moved to a ranch 10 miles north of Overton in 1903.
Horses played a big part in the Torrey family. They shipped in train car loads of horses. The boys broke many of them and sold them to prospective buyers. Crowds of people came on Sundays to watch the rodeos.
Bert Torrey was born in 1891 and lived with his family until entering the Army during World War I. He was in the Balloon Battalion and they were on their way overseas when peace was declared. After an 18 month term of service he tood a mechanics course in Lincoln, Ne. In 1915 Bert and Ed Stryker attended the Worlds Fair in San Francisco.
Bert Married Ida (Greutman) in 1921 and they resided on a farm 8 miles southwest of Miller. They had two children Lewis and Dorothy. Community life revolved around the schoolhouse where the Torreys together with their neighbors and friends the Vogts, Franzens and Enochs took an active part in Grange and Literary meetings. Ida and Bert boarded several teachers of the district and also served as schoolboard members.
Regardless of the weather conditions Lewis and Dorothy walked one mile to Union Valley District 43 in Dawson county through all eight grades. Ida taught this school in 1914 before her marriage to Bert. Later years Dorothy and Arlis, Lewis’s wife also taught the same school. Lewis and Dorothy drove 8 miles to Miller High School staying much of the time with their Grandmother Greutman.
Entertainment included barn dances and also house dances in the neighborhood. Bert often played his violin and at times Lewis assisted on the mandolin with Dorothy at the piano.
Everyone in those days, including the Torrey’s raised chickens and milked a few cows. They traded in a crate of eggs and a few gallons of cream for groceries. One year Bert put bullsnakes in the barn in an attempt to rid the place of rats. The family wasn’t too happy about gathering eggs in the barn after that although it did seem to help control the rat population.
Times were difficult on the farms with hailstorms, grasshoppers, drought and dust storms taking their toll. Many lost their farms but with hard work and sacrifice Bert and Ida managed to hang on to theirs.
The area was without electricity until 1951, however, Bert did install a windcharger on the house for a lighting system. Telephones were nonexistenet until 1960 when Lewis called a special meeting at the schoolhouse and solicited 13 subscribers. The first telephone service came out of Overton, Ne.
Lewis Torrey farmed with his father until his marriage to Arlis (Saathoff). He purchased the farm from his late fathers estate and he and his family moved to the farm the year following his fathers death. Lewis and Arlis now reside in Kearney where he commutes six miles northwest to town raising Charolais cattle and farming. They have four children Keith, Kay, Barbara and Douglas.
Dorothy Torrey attended Kearney State College and taught school 4 1/2 years in Custer and Dawson counties. She married Harland Abels and they live 4 ½ miles northwest of Amherst on the farm that formerly belonged to Emil Buehler who clerked at the Cruisenberry Grocery Store in Miller for several years in the early 1900’s. Emil rigged an apparatus on his bicycle which permitted him to pedal his way to work from Watertown to Miller on the railroad tracks.
Harland farms as well as being a rural mail carrier serving routes out of both Amherst and Miller. They have two children, Deanna and Dennis. Deanna graduated from Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings where she became an X-Ray Technologist. After working several years she married Jim Hines who is an Energy Conservation Manager at the University at Lincoln. They have two daughters, Cherie and Jennifer. Dennis and his wife, Debra (English) live in Kearney where Debra is a nurse at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Dennis commutes to Amherst where he farms in partnership with his father.
Bert Torrey’s unexpected death was on July 23, 1955. He had stacked hay all day with the neighbors and that evening friends came to visit and play cards but later that night Bert became ill and had a fatal heart attack. Since Ida was unable to drive she walked 2 ½ miles to the Russel Whitsels farmhome to call for help. Ida then had a farm sale and moved to Kearney in 1956 and worked at the State Tuberculosis Hospital for 14 years. After retirement she enjoyed her first out of state trip to California. She became a member of the Christian Church after accepting Jesus Christ as her Savior. She passed away on Feb 6, 1974 and was buried by her husband Bert, in the Kearney Cemetery.

Re: New to Torrey research -- Torreys in MA

I know many years have past since you posted your email but I just happened upon it. Years ago (32) my father, aunt, and I traveled to Combe St Nicholas to locate our family. My dad has since pasted away but I remember we had a book with the entire geneology of the family that we used on our trip as reference. I hope to find this book to see from whom I am descended. It may be William. My dad grew up in Maine and Mass. and eventually settled in RI. I hope you still check this site and can respond to this email.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

I would like to find info. or connect with family of Homer W. (Herbert) & Alice (GILLAN) TORREY. According to census, Homer's parents were born in Michigan. He was b. Dec 1868, MI & his wife Alice was b. Aug 1873, ON, Can. They were married 1891c likely in US. 1892 their dau. Mildred was born in IN. 1894 their dau. Ruey/Ruby was born in MI. 1898 their son Roy (Clarence L.) was born in IL. 1900 the family was in Danville Tp., Vermilion Co., IL & Homer was a brakeman with the RR. By 1910 Homer had returned to MI & was in Muskegon City, MI & still with the RR. 1950 his wife was in Muskegon as reported when her sister died in Ontario. Dau. Mildred m. William R. Green, 1916, Muskegon City. 1919, Roy m. Ferol I. Boltz in Muskegon. Roy & Ferol appear in 1920 census in Chillicothe Village, Peorie Co., IL & Roy is a brakeman with the railroad.
I am not actually searching the Torrey family but the Gillan family, therefore am interested in any connections to this part of the family.

Jane did marry a Skinner, but she was not listed in her fathers will, just her son, Albert Eugene Skinner, who would have been near the age of Ethel and Grace. George Botsworth was named as special Gaurdian to Ethel, Grace, and Eugene. Jane was living in Michigan at that time, or rather before that time as I would think she may have died
His will lists all the children from different marriages and Jane is not on it. I am interested in the Ca angle.

nancyq1
