Torbert/Johnston of Columbia, PA

I am looking for information about an Elmira Elizabeth Torbert. I recently found an old family bible that contains information about my paternal grandfather, Ralph Edgar Johnston. His father was Edgar Torbert Johnston. Edgar's parents were Elmira Elizabeth Torbert(also seen as Ella)b.1862 and Henry Clay Johnston(also seen as Harry)b.1857. The bible has both Elmira and Henry as being born in Columbia, PA. I've hit a wall and any information on either the Torbert or Johnston side would be greatly appreciated.

My mother's maiden name is Torbert and she was born in Columbia PA. Her mother was Violet Pearl Henry and father was Alfred S. Torbert. I am trying to research this information too. My mother passed away recently but my uncle, Charles Torbert is still alive. I will ask if he knows of a Elmira Elizabeth Torbert.

Thank you so much for replying. I actually have information regarding Elmira's parents and siblings. I am stuck on the Johnston lineage however. Elmira married Harry Clay Johnston. These are my GGG-grandparents.

Your grandparents married 12/31/1936. Our lineage is connected. See if you are able to follow the link below. You may have already been here, but just in case.

This is definitely your line from what you've told me.

If you go backwards through Albert, you will see my Elmira. Hope I've helped!!!

Basically the breakdown is that my GGG-grandmother, Elmira, is Alfred Sylvester Torbert's great aunt. :)

If you have anymore questions please don't hesitate. As well as if you have anymore info!!

Are you sure that Alfred's middle initial is S and not N? My family is from Columbia and appears to be of the line being discussed.
A question though: the website noted is http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... and is says Black Torbert Family - as in AfroAmerican? If so, there are huge errors in the tree because I know that the most recent entries on this tree are definitely not black.

Positive about Alfred Sylvester Torbert. He was my grandfather. Still have a Great Aunt "Ludy" that lives in Columbia which was his youngest sister. He is buried in Arlington:

1. TORBERT, ALFRED S
CWO US ARMY
DATE OF BIRTH: 01/27/1918
DATE OF DEATH: 08/11/1974
BURIED AT: SECTION 20 SITE 50266
ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY

Alfred N Torbert was Alfred S Torbert's Father, my Great Grandfather.

Not sure of the Black Torbert family, but as far as I know, it is different.

Ok, and Norman Wesley Torbert was Alfred Norman Torbert's father. Norman Wesley was my g-grandfather. My grandfather was James Collins Torbert, Alfred Norman Torbert's brother. Do you happen to know what Norman Wesley's mother's maiden name was? Her given name was Luzetta or possibly Mary Luzetta. Do you know how the Torbert's came to be in Columbia, Pa.? I think they may have come from Bucks County, Pa. but I haven't been able to verify that.

Norman W Torbert was married to Mary O. Collins which would explain the middle name "Collins". Norman W's Father was John Torbert and Mother was Mary Luzetta (from Massachusetts) but I am not able to follow Mary's line any further back. Norman W. was from Manor in Armstrong Co. but his Great Grandfather Samuel Torbert was from Upper Makefield in Bucks County and Great Grandmother, Mary Philpot was from Bucks County as well. I am able to follow the Torbert line all the way back to 1695 when a Samuel Torbert (married to Elizabeth Lamb) was born in Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland. He died in 1778 in Upper Makefield, Bucks County, PA

I've seen the line you describe on ancestry.com. Do you have any historical documentation for the move from Bucks to Lancaster County?

Norman W Torbert is my great-great uncle. My father knew his G-Uncle Norman as a child growing up in Virginia. My lineage, beginning with my father: John Raleigh Torbert (Nelson Co., VA) > John Charles Torbert (b.Columbia PA, married Mary E. Moore of Waynesboro - then called Basic City, VA - lived in Piney River and Concord, VA) > John Thomas Torbert (Norman Wesley's brother). Current generations of my Torbert family live in Concord, South Boston & Lynchburg VA, Dallas TX, Waco TX, Seattle WA. I live in McGaheysville VA and my maiden name is Catherine Torbert. Several of us have researched our lineage, but cannot verify family prior to those in Columbia (formerly Manor, Lancaster Co.)PA.
