Topel/Skibbe History

Hello,

I'm doing a bit of research on my family tree, I am part of the Ohio Topels. My grandfather was the son Carlton Topel (1902-1968) and Josephine Stachowiak (1905-1971) of Fremont, OH. Carlton was the son of Gusdavis Topel (1869-1962) and Estella Ridgeway (birth and death dates unknown). Gusdavis was, I believe was born in Germany and I know passed away in Fremont. His parents were Albert Topel (1839-1893) and Caroline Skibbe (1845-1912) also both from Germany.

However, that is unfortunately where the record ends. I was hoping someone out there on Ancestry would have more pieces.

From what I understand, Albert Topel's brother August Hopa Topel (1825-1908), who I believe married Johanna Toepper, came over from Germany with Albert however moved to the western United States (Montana and Wisconson region).

I have a lot of hand written trees of the Toepper's too, however I am unsure of the relation between me and the people written down. The paper is rather old and I don't know who originally wrote it, it has just been passed down through the family, along with a type-writer written document of the descendants of Albert & Caroline Topel and August and Johanna Topel ending about in the 1960s.

Just saw your two year old post. I have begun building a family tree as a birthday gift (surprise!) for our pastor, L. John Topel, SJ, here in Port Townsend, Washington, and I would like to hear more your "handwritten trees" and typewritten document. August "Hopa" Topel (1825 Pomerania to 1908 Montana) was his great grandfather who settled in Bozeman, Montana after serving in the Prussian Army. I have just pulled together the most readily available info on an Ancestry.com tree and would be happy to make you a free Guest on the tree. Best to contact me by e-mail (lfriedel@aol.com). Let's collaborate. Len Friedel

Hi

A few weeks ago I began a tree as a surprise birthday gift for my pastor, Rev. L. John Topel, SJ (born 1934 in Seattle). August "Hopa" Topel was his paternal second great grandfather. If you can, check my Rev. L. John Topel, SJ Family Tree on Ancestry.com. If you can't access it, contact me at lfriedel@aol.com and I will tell you what I know about the Topels. The tree has >500 people in it already and I put a great deal of effort into understanding "Hopa" (which means "Old Grandpa"). BTW, in 1884-1885 these Topels emigrated from Daber per Lupow, Kreis Stolpe, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia to Montana. I do understand how the Skibbe family fits in the Topel tree by marriage.

My information about the Toepper family, however, is scant, so I think that we can help each other here. I look forward to exchanging information with you.
