My great grandfather is John Edward Toohill, Born Aug. 31. 1868 in NY. Married Viola Melvin Diefenbacher. They had 4 children, one being my grandfather. My grandfather (George M. Toohill) was born in New Orleans, LA in 1894. John Edward Toohill died in NY in 1942 and is buried in Westchester, Village of Pelham, NY. in a family plot with people by the name of Fitz???????? something. All of George Toohill's 7 children were born in NY, one being my mother. I think we might be connected to the Toohill's of Illinois because my aunt gave me some paper work and their names come up. How they fit I don't know. I had a message on Gen Forum from Teresa Toohill-Runyon, Who has a picture of my great grandmother with her great grandmother Anna Teresa (Burns) Toohill. So are they sister in laws? How does it fit? I have heard that brothers came from Ireland to Canada to the USA? My cousin heard that the spelling was changed when they came to the US. Don't know? Stories again. Any help to trace this family would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edward Francis / Anna Toohill
Nancy, I read your message about the Toohill's, Edward Francis and Anna. Could they be the same ones who lived in NY around the 1860s? My grandfather Francis was one of their six children and Edward was the harbor master of the Brooklyn waterfront. Their oldest was John and their youngest was Ella. These Toohills emigrated to America from County Cork around 1855. They appear in the NYC census book in 1860.

Patrick Toohill and Johanna Gleason had 8 childred, one was Edward Francis who married Anna Teresa Burns, they then had 10 childred, one was Edward Francis who married Louise Felcamp. I do not have the birth dates of either. My mother in law is the sister of the Edward Francis who married Louise Felcamp. Do any of these sound familiar? This is very interesting.

All the family members in NY are gone except for my generation. We have very little knowledge because my aunt never wanted to talk about the old days. From what I do know, Edward Francis - and his wife Anna were born in County Cork, Ireland. Anna and Edward had my uncle John in 1868 - he was the oldest. The youngest of the six was Ella who was born in 1888. My father was the son of Francis (one of the six). They had two sons, my uncle Francis and my father William. Both are deceased. I have a cousin Roger who lives in WVA and my brother and I live in NY. My aunt once said that all the Toohills in the United States were related, but I don't know any of the rest of the family. Could your mother in law be the related to the six Toohill children in NY? I never had much luck getting Aunt Ella to talk, all I have is the grave records and they are not complete. I wish I could find out more.

My great grandparents came from County Cork. They are first listed in the New York City census of 1850. I intend to do some more research at the NYC library this month, will let you know what I find. My great grand father was Edward Toohill, his wife was Anna Toohill and they had six children. The first was born in 1868 the last was born in 1888. I'll keep your posted if you're interested.
