Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Thomas Toohey (1835-1918) will be honored with a gravesite ceremony for National Medal of Honor Day. The ceremony for Sergeant Toohey is scheduled for 2:00 pm, March 24, 2013 at his gravesite in Mount Washington Cemetery, 614 South Brookside Avenue, Independence, Missouri. Sergeant Toohey is a veteran of the Civil War and received his Medal of Honor in 1917 for gallantry and bravery on the battle line during the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1865.
Often called the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States Congress designated March 25th of each year as National Medal of Honor Day, a day dedicated to honoring the 3,472 men and women whose service and sacrifices were recognized with the nation’s highest medal, the Medal of Honor. The ceremony honoring Sergeant Toohey is a day early, March 24th, to take advantage of a Sunday afternoon.
The service is organized by the local Sons of the American Revolution, Society of the War of 1812, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Bugles Across America. The color guard includes descendants of past wars wearing uniforms representative from their ancestor’s war era. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Bugles Across America are providing a military gun salute and playing taps.
