Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
Looking for the parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY. May have been born around 1920's. Went by her mother's maiden name of Toohey. Her father was beleived to be O'Dell. Mother was of Native American descent and spelling may have been Toehay, Twohey, Toha, Towha, etc. Barbara went by the Toohey spelling and married Dale Neiman in 1950. They resided in McCook, Red Willow Co., NE. Barbara and Dale were my granddaughter's great-grandparents.

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
Hi, I have some info on Barb Neiman. in the 1930 census, I got quite a surprise! Patrick Toohey 71, wd. had 4 children living with him.John, Clifford, Mary, Clarence AND Edith Riggs, 22, Lucille gd., 9, Jean, gd 4, Jack, gs, 2 and Barbara L. gd, 11mos. It's apparent that Patrick was her grandfather. His wife was Sarah Clifford. She died 10 Feb. 1917, Laramie, WY. Bu. Greenhill Cem. After 1930, Edith ran off with a man named BAHR, and the children's father put them in an orphanage in WY. I haven't found where yet, but am still looking. Barb and Dale had three sons, Mike, Jerry and Benjamin. My daughter was married to Jerry until about 1979, when they were divorced. Who was your granddaughters ancestor? Might find out some more from my grandson who is interested in genealogy. Would be interested in sharing. Rose

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
I forget to mention, after the children were grown, they all took the last name of Toohey. I haven't found them all yet. I know there was a Faye, Norman, and others. I can't find my obit. on Barn. More when I find it! rose

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
My granddaughter's biological mother was Jerry's daughter (Melinda) from his marriage with Karen Dicke - sometime after your daughter's divorce. I am not sure when, but Karen and Jerry's mariage also ended in divorce. Karen was killed in a single vehicle wreck almost 3 years ago near McCook.
Do you have any idea how the story of the Native American heritage ties in with this line?? Melinda told me that she was told that either Barbara or her mother Edith were at least part Native American. I want to be able to pass this info onto my granddaughter when she is older. So any info you can share would be helpful.
Ironically, when I taught in Mullen several years ago, I had Dale's nephew as a student!

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
Hi Susan, sorry to be so long getting back to you. on July 31, we lost my daughter-in-law, very suddenly, and we're still getting used to it! I found a Karen Lynn Dicke Riners, daughter Linda & husband, and a daughter Jane Riners. Probably the one you mentioned? As for the native American line, I think that is thru Jerry and Dale, his dad. They have nearly black eyes, hair. Barb. line The Toohey line came from Ireland. As far Edith, Barb's mother, they came from Okla. as Judd's, so might have been Indians, but haven't had much luck tracking her. Just that the name origanily was Judd, then they moved to Kansas and took the name O'Dell, which was Edith's name. I have found in the 1930 census, apparently Barb's name was 'RIGGS', Patrick Toohey was apparently her grandfather. Haven't made a good connection yet. Patrick & wife Sarah are buried in Greenhill cem., Laramie, WY. Still trying to learn more. Found Patrick in 1900-1930 census'. Will send more when/if I find it! Rose

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is never easy, but a sudden loss is even harder. May God send you peace and comfort.
Yes, that is the same Karen. Melinda (or Lindy) is her daughter with Jerry. Jane is her daughter with her second husband Rick Reiners. Dale's brother Byron ran the newspaper here in Mullen for a few years and I had their youngest son in school his jr and sr years. I really don't remember much about his physical features though. All three of his kids were very tall and blonde to light brown hair.
The info that was shared with me is that the Indian line came through Barbara's mother. I was also told that Barbara at some point lived in WY and that they thought Edith had come from either SD or OK. Much of what you have said is the same as what I have been told. So, I am thinking that maybe the Indian line may come through Edith's line. If I remember correctly, Edith may have been married a couple of times?? Taht would account for the different names. I am also thinking that she may have not been married when she had Barbara?? The info I got was rather sketchy, so I am trying to piece everything together.
So, just to be correct, Patrick was married to Edith first and he later remarried a Sarah?

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
No, Patrick was only married to Sarah Clifford. As far as I can figure out, he would have been Barbara's grandfather! In the 1930 census, Patrick is 70 years old, but Barbara's mother is listed as Edith RIGGS!. Barbara never said her mother was a Toohey. She just said when Edith ran off with that BAHR, her father couldn't handle the children and put them in an orphanage in WY. As the kids grew up and went on their own, they took the name TOOHEY. Edith's family name back in OKLA was Judd, but because there was an outlaw family with that name, he moved to Kansas and tood the name O'Dell. That was where Edith was born. Don't know when they moved to WY. Patrick, Sarah and some children are buried in Greenhill Cem., Laramie, WY. Havent'found Riggs,or Bahr as yet. Edith is bured here in McCook. The Tooey name came from Ireland, into NY. As far as what Barb said, the indian part came from the Neiman line. Both Dale, Jerry and my grandson Jason have the coal-black hair and black black eyes! Still trying to find Riggs! e-mail: howard@ocsmccook.com if you want to contact that way. Rose

Re: Parents of Barbara Louise Toohey of Cheyenne, WY
Drat!!! forget to tell you, I went into Google and found McCook gazette.com/obituaries and found Karen's obit. In Dec. 2009, last item in the list. Also found at McCook Gazette.com/story what happened. Karen was driving a truck loaded with corn, and for an unknown reason, when she came to a T in the road, made no attempt to turn or stop.Just went straight thru into the ditch on the other side. It happened on a country road north of Holbrook about 2.15 on a Sat. afternoon. A farmer found her a short time later, but she was dead at the scene. No reason was found why she didn't stop or try to turn. No drugs, alchol, or mechanical failure was found. Barb, Dale and Jerry were heart broken when Jerry had to stop picking the baby up for a visit.l The mother raised such a fuss everytime Jerry came to get her, the girl wound up in tears, then when she said she was remarring, and her husband wanted to adopt her, the family dicided what was best ofr the girl was to let her go, as bad as they hated to! Jerry was married to my daughter before he married to Karen, but were divorced some time before that. That's why Barb was telling what she did. Wish I'd asked more questions at the time. Just getting started in genealogy then. Rose
