I'm researching the Toogood line, the farthest I have been able to go is Capt. Wm Toogood, born abt. 1748 in Wellington, "Sumersettshire, England" per his gravestone in Chester, Mass. Does anyone have information on my Wm Toogood (I know there is a lot of them)? Parents, etc.

My Toogoods only go back to 1800 in PA or CT. I have a Luther Toogood born 1800 who married a Clariss Post (b. 1-6-1801) they had 5 children Phidelia, Myron, Garrett, Isiah Luther. Then he married Catherine Ensley and had 8 more, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Clarissa, Rueben, Daniel, Emery, Parley, and Amy. Anything here sound familiar?

None of the names sound familiar. My Capt. Toogood was born in England in 1748, came to America, married in New York and settled in Massachusetts. That is where he died in 1820. He only had one son so tracing the this line of Toogoods was fairly easy. Going back past 1749 is the difficult part. Thank you for you reply. Ruth

Thank you Kay for the info. I do have that piece of information, however I appreciate your help. I have traced Capt. Toogood to 1775, would love to go back farther. I know he was born in Wellington, "Sumersettshire", England (according to his gravestone). Thanks again.

Hi Ruth, I have just discovered this web site.the spelling is "Somersetshire". There is a Family history soc. which covers this area and I have seen other researchers looking for Toogoods in this locality. My friend and nieghbour belongs to this society and attends the meetings so I will ask him to make some enquiries on his next visit. My Toogoods come from Wiltshire.
Best wishes, Tom

I've only just come across this bulletin board during research of my family. I've so far got around 420 verified names linked dating back to 1604. I am based in Wales, UK with virtually all the other ancestors living in the Somerset or Monmouthshire areas of the UK. A group of my grandfather's siblings also emigrated to New York in 1920s.
I have a website that I originally setup as a base for my research but I have not yet posted any name details. I'm always willing to hear of any other possible missing links
though. http://www.toogood.org

From my research of the name itself the spelling has changed over the years with the earliest being Togod (Meaning Too Proud) in Viking days. There is a family crest as well.
