Surnames: SMITH - TOOGOOD - SANDERS
Good morning/afternoon Everyone.
I have started my research on this line of my family.
To start with...
I have Charles TOOGOOD born 1816 Gillingham Dorset his parents Benjamin TOOGOOD & Susannah GANE.
Benjamin & Susannah married 1816 Gillingham Dorset, Susannah was about 6 mths pregnant when she married Benjamin.
Charles married Clarissa SANDERS in 1845 Southampton Hampshire, his surname was registered as SMITH occupation Mason, his Father is registered as Benjamin occupation Miller.
Most of Charles & Clarissa's children were baptised in Southampton as TOOGOOD, but for some reason they all kept the SMITH surname.
Can anyone help me in solving the reason of the name changes through out the 1800's.
One idea well my idea that Susannah was pregnant to a SMITH & for some reason Benjamin TOOGOOD married her.
Has anyone come across a Benjamin SMITH occupation Miller in Gillingham Dorset in the early 1800's, I have searched every where.
Hope I have explained myself properly.

Take care

Hi
I Have that Toogood family back to Thomas 1656 if you are interested, but I don't have Charles as a son to Benjamin & Susannah, I have Ann, Grace, Thomas, Letita and George.
Maybe because she as you said was already pregnant to a Smith before the marriage to Benjamin.
Can we share data.

Craig.. thank you for answering my query.
Charles born 1816 was baptised as a TOOGOOD, but used the SMITH surname at the time of his marriage, in the different census & when he died. His children used the SMITH surname in the census, but were baptised TOOGOOD.
I was hoping that someone may have know the reason why of the name change.
Charles may have been another man's child, a lot of people may not want to include that in their family data, as Charles in for certain Susannah son but is only a maybe for Benjamin.
Talk soon
