Re: Origin of Tonge family

Hi Michael, my maiden name is Tonge and my family ancestry traces through the north west of England (mainly Lancashire and Cheshire) and some of the north east. I have traced a number of my ancestors back to this area as far back as the 1700s. There is a Tonge Moor and a Tonge Road somewhere in the north of England. I'm still researching but I was told the name Tonge traces back to the Vikings and that it originated from either Norway or Denmark. Given that the Vikings did invade England from the north, this story makes a lot more sense than your story about Chinese and Caribbean ancestry. Kind regards. Susan
Origin of Tonge family

Hi, I am a bus driver in Allentown, PA. One of my passengers was named Tonge, and I asked about the name, and she said it was originally Tong, a Chinese name. She said these two Chinese guys came to a Carribean island, I forget which one, and she didn't know when, but these guys came to the island, and settled there. They built up businesses and made a lot of money, and mixed with the local black population, so now there many Tonges (they added an e to the name to make it sound more French) who are a mixture of Chinese and black. They have dark skin like a black person, but Fumanchu moustaches. She said the government took away alot of their property. I don't know if she was pulling my leg, or making it up, or just repeating misinformation, but that's what she said.

I am the granddaughter of George Scott Tonge and I am also researching my family tree. So far I have learned that my grandfather was the son of Robert Tonge and Mary Grundy married on 19 Sep 1859 St John the Evangelist, Farnworth. Robert Tonge - was the child of Ashton Tonge & Ellen, Baptism: 10 Aug 1834 St John the Evangelist, Farnworth.
Ashton & Ellen had two children a daughter Elizabeth and Robert.
My grandfather George Scot Tonge (1873 – 1949) and my grandmother Catherine Crilley lived on St James Street Farnworth (she had a sister Susan who lived on George Street Farnworth) had nine children – the first born died as a baby and Mary Alice, George, Martha, Elizabeth, Edith, Norman (my dad), Agnes and Robert.
My grandfathers name was Samuel Tonge, he embarqued on a very young age to Santo Domingo ( Dominican Republic). He used to tell us stories about his roots and the family he left there. We his grandchildren am also including my dad and aunts have not met any of our ancestors from the Tonge family and we really would like to. My contact number is 1-809-399-6115, pls feel free to contact me if you have anything to share.!

I am Olson Tonge's daughter. My father is from Antigua and his father was James Tonge. All I know about the Tonge family from Antigua is that they live in Urlins and that it supposedly had to do with some Chinese background. If anyone knows anything about this please post up a message. Another thing I would like to add is tha the Tonge's are all over the place. My family lives in New York (Brooklyn and some are inthe Bronx as well), Pennsylvania, Canada, and England.

I'm searching for the family of William Clayton Tong (1881-1960) and Laura Guimond (1880-1957)of Cleveland or Elyria, Ohio. William was son of Albert Thomas Tong and Ellen Hall-Imhoff, Laura was daughter of Alfred Guimond and Philomina Baron of Detroit. William and Laura had three children, Laura Tong Thompson, Charlotte Tong Wilcox, and Willaim A. Tong. All lived in either Cleveland or Elyria, Ohio. Laura was the youngest sister of my Gr-Grandmother, Herminia Marie Guimond Antaya. Any help on this family is appreciated.

Barb

I don't have solid proof, but I believe it may be German. The Toneges (sp) family I was wondering about, we think may have been friends of my great-great-great grandfather's family and quite possibly they all came over to the US from Germany around the same time. It's the only theory we've got at this time, and we may never be able to prove it completely.. but that's the best I can do for you. :)

Hi, I guess we are related in a distant way. I am a Sutherland down through William 1771 & Mary brother of Robert who was grandfather of Gervase. I do not know much about him except he died on 2 May 1855 and is buried in Gravesend & Milton Cemetery (age 43). I was at the cemetery last Friday 29/6/07 and found two gravestones of the Tonge family. If you want copies then please contact me and I will let you have them, or if you live local the stones are in the old part of the cemetery. One Gervase is buried with a family of Vincett and the other is Sarah & Benjamin. Nice to find someone else who is on the same 'family' line. If I find anything else I will contact you.

Hi Richard, my family were from round that area my Grandfather was Walter William Tonge borne about 1880, he had two sons, Harold (my father) and his brother Gerald. We lived at Irlams o'th height - and relatives lived up the Bolton Road, and also Warrington, Wigan etc. Truly a Northern Family. Walter had several brothers, one of whom was John and that's about as far as I've got. But I'm going to keep going. I'll let you know if anything comes up Pat Tonge

HI, I am from England, although now live in France. There are a lot of Tonges in the North of England around the Manchester area, where I am from originally. My Grandfather was Walter William Tonge, he had several brothers and was borne around 1880. My Father was Harold and he had a brother Gerald, my Father was borne in 1908. The family seem to be very interesting, they owned a Colliery producing much of the coal for the area, and also a Brewery. Don't know if this helps, but Walter my grandfather was a lovely man. Unfortunately he died when I was very tiny of a duodenal ulcer - unheard of today.

My Father was Harold Tonge borne in 1908 in Swinton, Lancashire. My Grandfather was Walter William Tonge, he was an electrical engineer (he worked on the wiring of the Free Trade Hall and the Corn Exchange in Manchester), and lived at Irlams o'th Height in Salford. Walter had several brothers, one called John and the family lived mostly either in the Manchester area, and some in Warrington. Although I understand there was a connection to North Wales. One of Walter's brothers owned a Colliery, and another owned a Brewery. If anyone out there has any further information I'd love to hear from them Many thanks

I'm wondering if my 4th great-grandmother, Elizabeth Tonge, is related to your Tonges. She married Samuel Hall. He was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England around 1788. Samuel was a tortoise shell comb maker on Pill Street in Dublin. My connection to Samuel and Elizabeth is through their daughter, Emma Hall (1819-1912; Mrs. John Hanly)

-Richard

I noticed your reply about Gervase Woodhouse Tonge. Unconfirmed family history has him in my line. Do you know if he was related to a Robert Tonge born 26 dec 1817 in Finsbury England. His Father is listed as Peter but nothing else. Anything you have would be helpful. Thanks Charlene Tonge Stam

Thanks for that. I have had some contact with Stan Sutherland who is related to William Sutherland, and therefore must be a relative of yours. He has passed copies of the gravestones to me, along with a lot of other info on the Sutherlands. If you would like this please let me know. However I didn't know there was another Gervase. Was he a Tonge?

Tonge(s)

I am curious as to whether anyone has any information on a Tonge(s)/Tongus/Tongas family that was living in Dubois County, Indiana in 1870. The family consisted of the husband, William, his wife Henrietta, and their daughter Louisa. I am actually searching for information on another individual that was in their household at the time - Frederic Osliete (aka Oslage). Frederic was my gg-grandfather and he was 8 years old. I'm wanting to find out who the Tonge(s) were. Right now, I only have the assumption that Frederic's mother died (his father died in 1863) and that this family took him in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you think the Tonge name is originally from England. Mainly what county did they live in? What about France? I always thought it sounded French. I have been checking phone books in Dublin and Irish death records. Very few Tonges in Ireland but mine lived in Dublin. Thomas Tonge, son Samuel Tonge, son Samuel James Tonge. Any ideas?????

I wonder if your name is derived from the name Tonge Springs in Middleton, Lancashire. This is close to Oldham.

I am looking for additional information on the following data entry I found in the 1901 UK Census. I am trying to find the actual connection of these names with Ann Birchall (the grandmother at this houshold). Also trying to determine Ann Hardman's maiden name. The address is 9 Green Street in Farnworth, which I believe was Ann Birchall's address for many years.

Thanks

Mike

Match Quality View Record Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image

Ann Birchall abt 1824 Wigan, Lancashire, England Grandmother, Grandma Farnworth Lancashire

Ann E Hardman abt 1877 Penistone, Yorkshire, England Wife Farnworth Lancashire

James Hardman abt 1876 Farnworth, Lancashire, England Head Farnworth Lancashire

Margaret Tonge abt 1849 Wigan, Lancashire, England Mother-in-law Farnworth Lancashire

Minnie Tonge abt 1881 Penistone, Yorkshire, England Sister-in-law Farnworth Lancashire
