This is just a mention that Toncray Toncrey
researchers should be aware of ... Toncray and Toneray may confused on script records..

For example -- census index for Schulyer Cty IL shows Delila Toncray 1860 and Delila Toneray 1850. 1830 census index for NY gives both John and Daniel as Toncray and as Toneray. These variations can be seen at US Bureau of Land Management BLM on-line records.. where the original land patents (titles) can be downloaded. The only ones are Toncray - Everett, Horace, James, Richard, Russell, and Silas -- but some of the could easily be read as Toneray..

Knowledge of this possible variation may
help some researchers removed from family
named.

I am searching on my greatfather who came supposedly from Ireland in 1840-50's Bartholomew Tonroy, Tonry, Tonery, Tannery
and his brother named Martin.. Its anyone's guess as to whether these or other Tonrys or Tonerys lost a "c" or "q" somewhere along the way. These names and Toner, Tonra derive from Irish-Norse name Thomrair ..

Jerry, I agree with yor ananlysis. The TOncray/Toneray mix is often found. But, there are a lot of other variations of the name. I think I have 31 different spelling found in census indexes and other governmental records.

The name comes from France, according to family lore. Almost without exception, all the Toncrays I have contacted have heard the same thing. The original spelling was probably Tancre'. I have a document from the Historical Research Center in London that states the name originated in France and it was derived from the high German "Tank" meaning thoughtful and "red" meaning advisor. How true this is is anybody's guess. But, it is something to think about and try to determine if it is true.

Good hunting. Jim Toncray of Virginia Beach, VA.

I am researching my Tonra ancestors who came from Castlebar Co.Mayo Ireland. I have a fair amount of information if anyone would like to see if their ancestors are connected with our family tree. My great grandfather Thomas was born in 1865 and he was the son of Michael Tonra b.1829 and Mary Blane b.1841.Michael's mother was named Honor and his father was Thomas or James. Please e-mail with any information.

Your Patrick was the brother of my great grandmother, Catherine "Kate" Tonra. She married Peter Joseph Clarke and they also left Ireland for Philadelphia in 1888. I had suspected that more of the family had left for America but this is the first that I had found info on more of the family other than what I got from the Mayo Family History Centre in 2002.
